Abstract

ABSTRACT A mobile accommodation unit (1) like a caravan or a motor home having acceptable overall dimensions during displacement thereof either by towing or driving, upon which it can be expanded and optionally equipped with each desired accessories. Such basic accommodation unit (1) is surrounded, except in the area of its bottom surface and one side surface (14, 15), with a supplemental shell (2), a silhouette of which in the longitudinal vertical plane is adapted to the silhouette of the basic unit (1) in the same plane at least in such extent that the shell (2) is allowed to be displaced to and fro in the transversal direction, namely perpendicularly with regard to the aforementioned plane.

Description

MOBILE ACCOMMODATION UNIT
The present invention generally belongs to building construction, namely to portable collapsible or expandable constructions, which enable expanding of accommodation volume. At the same time, at least certain embodiments of the invention also refer to the field of transporting, in particular to vehicles, which are adapted for accommodation and are in addition to that collapsible or expandable or may otherwise be transformed. In this, all vehicles are included, which may be used not only for the accommodation purposes, but also for the purposes of sale, exhibition or promotion, like a fair boots or the like. Quite generally such invention may also belong to removable roofing constructions for vehicles.
When bearing in mind a mobile accommodation unit with or without wheels, and in particular a camping trailer intended for being towed by motor vehicles or the like, there is a main purpose of the invention how to improve such an unit in order to assure with respect to common traffic regulations acceptable overall dimensions during the towing or otherwise displacing such unit on the one hand, whilst on the other hand various measures should also be easily applicable, which would lead to essentially improving of accommodation performances in various meteorological conditions and in various circumstances during the use thereof, however not only by simply enlarging the accommodation space or surface area, but also by enabling installation of various equipment without any essentially reconstruction of the original accommodation unit as such. Numerous solutions related to the previously mentioned topics are known from the prior art.
DE 199 24 466 proposes enlarging of the accommodation space by means of combining several accommodation units, by which each unit per se is available as an integral unit without wheels and may not be collapsed, and by which such units may be arranged in transversal and/or longitudinal sequences and distributed in one or more stocks, by which the upper stock may also be completed by appropriate roofing constructions. Accordingly, this document teaches that the accommodation surface or space may be expanded by using several accommodation units, and also that accommodation units may be protected against meteorological influences by means of a corresponding roofing construction.
CA 2,263,456 proposes collapsible accommodation units without wheels. Each accommodation unit consists of panels, which are pivotally connected to each other and form appropriate walls, floor and ceiling. Each accommodation unit is collapsible into an essentially plate-like assembly of said elements and is therefore quite simple for transporting, by which also its volume during transporting is relatively small. However, assembling of such units ordinary takes an essential time and is pretty hard. In addition to that, there is always certain risk that at least one of pivotally interconnections between each pair of elements may be damaged either during transporting or also during assembling or collapsing of the unit, which puts under question possibility of using such unit or even of a combination of units.
US 6,325,447 Bl proposes improving of comfort by exploitation of a motorhome by means of expanding the accommodation volume, which is achieved by transposition of the roofing assembly in the vertical direction by means of adequate levers, which are actuated by means of electric driving means and appropriate transmission means. The ground surface remains unchanged, and beds may e.g. be moved into some higher position, by which some other equipment may be installed into the accommodation space. Such an approach may probably be useful in manufacturing of accommodation units, while reconstruction of an existing vehicle in such a manner seems to be quite complicated. To this aim, complete roofing would have to be removed and replaced with another one, by which also said levers together with driving and transmission means would have to be installed into the vehicle.
According to DE 33 03 543 Al a motorhome or similar vehicle adapted for accommodation is equipped with roofing construction, which is displaceable in the vertical direction, wherein each bed is pivotally mounted in the area of ceiling and may be shifted from its vertical position into its horizontal position or vice versa. Such a solution may normally lead to quite similar deficiencies like in the previously discussed document.
US 4,215,894 and US 4,779,916 propose modification of the cargo area on a truck into an accommodation area, by which appropriate grid construction is foreseen, which is surrounded by appropriate tent. Such an extremely simplified approach should actually enable using the same vehicle both for transporting cargo and also for accommodation purposes, which is no doubt pretty economic but definitively not comfortable at all.
On the contrary, US 5,490,704 proposes an accommodation unit, which is finalized and foreseen exclusively for the purposes of accommodation, but may also be mounted onto a vehicle, which is otherwise used for transporting of cargo. Mounting of such unit onto each vehicle is generally possible without any essential reconstruction of the vehicle as such, and a small crane is probably foreseen for such a purpose, which should generally not be a huge problem. The real problem is, that such unit can be mounted on an exactly adapted vehicle and not also on any other disposable one. Besides, accommodation space and surface thus obtained are relatively small, and no other comfort is available to the user except of sleeping in a dry chamber.
Furthermore, in US 6,923,498 there is a suggestion that on the top surface of an accommodation unit like a classic camping trailer a roofing construction is placed. Consequently, without any reconstruction of the trailer, such unit is then protected against meteorological impacts and moreover, an insufficient thermal insulation of the ceiling area may also be compensated by means of better protection of the accommodation unit against the sun rays. However, despite to adding of said roofing construction, the accommodation space remains completely unchanged, and moreover, a problem arises prior to transporting the trailer towards any other location, what to do with said roofing and tiles. Transporting of said roofing construction together with the trailer seems to be impossible due to safety reasons, while a special road transport normally involves extremely high expenses, which then must be added to costs of collapsing and expanding.
Still further US 2005/035,619 proposes an accommodation unit, in particular a camping trailer or a motorhome equipped with at least one side panel, which in the area of a recess comprises a transversally displaceable wall surrounded with a flexible material. Upon appropriate displacement of said wall an additional surface and space are obtained, which may lead to improvement of accommodation comfort at least in certain extent. However, such obtained additional surface and volume are relatively small, when compared with the existing surface and space of the accommodation unit as such. On the other hand, assuring of such additional space normally requires an essential reconstruction of the accommodation unit as such and is deemed to be feasible exclusively during the stage of manufacturing such accommodation unit and not subsequently. Still further, such modification should normally result in decreasing of thermal insulating properties without any essential possibility in course of installation of additional requisites or devices, which could lead to improvement of comfort by exploitation of such accommodation unit.
The present invention refers to a mobile accommodation unit, which consists of at least a front wall, a rear wall, a top wall, side walls and optionally of a chassis or any other appropriately rigid bottom panel, which altogether form a basic accommodation unit. According to the invention, said basic accommodation unit is surrounded, except in the area of its chassis or its bottom panel as well as in the area of at least one side wall, with a supplemental shell, the silhouette of which within the longitudinal vertical plane matches to the silhouette of said basic unit within the same plane at least to such extent that said shell is displaceable along said unit in the transversal direction thereof perpendicularly with respect to the said plane by means of appropriate guiding members, which are preferably mounted both on the unit and also on the shell.
One of the embodiments of the present invention refers to a mobile accommodation unit, comprising having chassis with a towing assembly and without an autonomous engine, wherein a box-like trailer body', which is attached on said chassis and is formed of a front wall, a rear wall, a top wall and side walls, which altogether form a basic accommodation unit, which comprises at least one door and at least one window arranged in the area of at least one of said walls, and is in the area of said chassis preferably furnished with optionally applicable supporting legs. Regarding this embodiment the invention provides that said basic unit is surrounded, except on its bottom side and in the area of one side wall, with a supplemental shell, the silhouette of which within the longitudinal vertical plane matches to the silhouette of said basic unit within the same plane, so that the shell is displaceable along the basic unit in its transversal direction perpendicularly with respect to said plane.
To this aim, said basic unit is furnished on its external surface in the area of its front wall and/or its rear wall and/or its top wall with a desired number of guiding members, which extend parallel to each other in the transversal direction of the unit and are adapted to cooperate with complementary guiding members arranged on the internal surface of the supplemental shell, so that by means of interaction of said guiding members on the basic unit with said guiding members on the shell the last is displaceable along the basic unit in the transversal direction perpendicularly with respect to said plane, by which the shell may also be fixed in each desired position on the basic unit by means of fixation means.
In this, said shell is preferably formed by a front wall, a rear wall, a top wall and a single side wall, and said shell is moreover furnished with at least one door, which in respect of arrangement and dimensions corresponds to the door of the basic unit. Furthermore, said shell is furnished with at least one window, in particular such one, which in respect of arrangement and dimensions corresponds to each belonging window of the basic accommodation unit. Still further, in this preferred embodiment at least one of walls of the shell includes at least one layer of a thermal insulation material, by which at least one of said walls of the shell may also consist of at least partially transparent material. In addition to that, the shell is furnished with optionally applicable supporting legs, when desired. Finally, the shell may also be furnished on its external surface with at least one accessory, which is selected from the group, which includes supplemental windows, ventilating recesses, solar energy collectors, heat exchangers, aerials or similar telecommunication equipment, further protective or decorative or camouflage coatings, self-adhesive labels, advertising banners, traffic sign carriers, and carriers for a sporting requisite like a bicycle or a boat.
A further embodiment of the mobile accommodation unit according to the invention refers to improvement of a motorhome. Such a mobile accommodation unit consists of a chassis equipped with an autonomous power means, in particular an internal combustion engine, as well as of a box-like body, which is attached to said chassis and is generally assembled by at least a rear wall, a top wall and side walls, which together form a basic accommodation unit, which moreover comprises at least one door and preferably at least one window, which are arranged in the area of said walls. The invention proposes that the basic accommodation unit is surrounded in the area of its top wall and/or its rear wall and just one side wall with a supplemental shell, the silhouette of which in the longitudinal vertical plane matches to the silhouette of the basic accommodation unit along the same plane at least in such an extent that the shell may be displaced in the transversal direction perpendicularly with respect to the previously mentioned plane along the unit by means of guiding members, which are available on the basic unit as well as on the shell. Furthermore, also in this embodiment the basic unit is equipped with appropriate number of horizontal guiding members, which extend in the transversal direction parallel to each other and are arranged in the area of the chassis and/or the rear wall and/or the top wall, and are moreover adapted to cooperate with complementary guiding members, which are arranged on the internal surfaces of the shell, which is consequently displaceable in the transversal direction of the basic unit thanks to cooperation of said guiding members on the basic unit and said guiding members on the supplemental shell, by which said shell may then be fixed in each desired position on the basic unit by means of adequate blocking members. Still further, the supplemental shell preferably comprises a bottom panel, which is attached to the base unit or to guiding members, and in particular, such supplemental shell consists of a rear wall, a top wall and a single side wall, and moreover also of a front wall, which is however attached to the side wall or optionally to the bottom panel or to the top wall, and is preferably connected with said side wall with the possibility of being pivoted around the vertical axis. When desired, the shell is also furnished with at least one window, which in respect of arrangement and dimensions corresponds to each belonging window of the basic unit. Furthermore, at least one of walls of the shell includes at least one layer of a thermal insulation material. Still further, at least one of walls of the shell may also consist of at least partially transparent material, and the shell may optionally also be furnished with optionally applicable supporting legs. Besides, the shell may also be furnished on its external surface with at least one accessory, which is selected from the group, which includes supplemental windows, ventilating recesses, solar energy collectors, heat exchangers, aerials or similar telecommunication equipment, further protective or decorative or camouflage coatings, self-adhesive labels, advertising banners, traffic sign carriers, and carriers for a sporting requisite like a bicycle or a boat. A still further embodiment of a the mobile accommodation unit according to the invention represents a cargo container, which is however adapted for accommodation purposes and consists of at least a front wall, a rear wall, a top wall, side walls and also of an appropriately rigid bottom panel, which then altogether form a basic accommodation unit.
In this relationship the invention provides that said basic unit is surrounded, except on its bottom side in the area of the bottom panel as well as of the side wall, with a supplemental shell, the silhouette of which within the longitudinal vertical plane matches to the silhouette of the unit within the same plane at least to such an extent that the shell is displaceable in the transversal direction thereof perpendicularly with respect to the previously mentioned plane, preferably by means of guiding members available both on the basic unit and on the shell, by which said shell moreover comprises a bottom panel. In this, the top wall of the shell may be allowed to pivot around the horizontal axis and may be attached to the top wall of the basic unit. The bottom panel of the shell may also be allowed to pivot around the horizontal axis and may be attached to the bottom panel of the basic unit. Said guiding members may generally be foreseen at least in the area of the top wall of the unit and of the top wall of the shell, or at least in the area of front walls of the unit and the shell as well as of the rear walls of the basic unit and of the shell. In this embodiment, a top wall of the shell may also be elbowed in a direction away from the ground or from the bottom panel when available. In addition, the shell may also be furnished on its external surface with at least one accessory, which is selected from the group, which includes supplemental windows, ventilating recesses, solar energy collectors, heat exchangers, aerials or similar telecommunication equipment, further protective or decorative or camouflage coatings, self-adhesive labels, advertising banners, traffic sign carriers, and carriers for a sporting requisite like a bicycle or a boat.

Fig. 16 is a longitudinal cross-section of a still further embodiment of the mobile accommodation unit.
In the shown embodiment (Figs. 1 — 4) a basic accommodation unit 1 is a classic camping trailer, where on the chassis 10', which is equipped with a towing assembly and not-shown wheels, a box-like trailer body 10" is arranged, which is formed of a front wall 11, rear wall 12, top wall 13 and side walls 14, 15. A window 16 is mounted into each desired wall 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and a door 17 is mounted within a desired side wall 14, 15. Optionally, said unit 1 is also equipped with lights 18 and other accessories, and preferably also with optionally applicable supporting legs 19.
According to the invention, said basic unit 1 is surrounded — except on its bottom side and in the area of one side wall 14, 15 - with a supplemental shell 2, the silhouette of which within the longitudinal vertical plane is adapted i.e. matches to the silhouette of said basic unit 1 within the same plane, so that the shell 2 is displaceable along the unit 1 in its transversal direction perpendicularly with respect to the previously mentioned plane. To this aim, said unit 1 is equipped on its external surface with a desired number of guiding members 31, which extend parallel to each other in the transversal direction of the unit 1 along the front wall H5 back wall 12 and top wall 13. In this particular embodiment (Fig. 6) said guiding members 31 are available as female elements, which are adapted to cooperate with complementary male guiding members 32 (Fig. 7), which are attached to the internal surface of the supplemental shell 2 and arranged corresponding to arrangement of previously mentioned guiding rails 31 (Fig. 8).
In this particular embodiment said supplemental shell 2 consists of a front wall 21, rear wall 22, top wall 23 as well as of a single side wall 24. Also the shell 2 is preferably furnished with appropriate windows 26 and door 27, which are shaped and arranged corresponding to windows 16 and door 17 of the unit 1, and moreover also with optionally applicable supporting legs 29, when appropriate. As already mentioned, thanks to the guiding means 31, 32 said shell 2 is displaceable in the transversal direction along the basic unit 1, which is therefore practically surrounded therewith, with exception of the bottom side and one of its side walls 14, 15. In addition, said shell 2 is allowed to be fixed on the unit 1 in each desired position, and in particular in its position according to Figs 1 and 2, by which appropriate fixation thereof in each desired position and also any further displacement thereof in the transversal direction of the unit 1 is achieved by means of blocking members 28. Such relative displacements between the basic unit 1 and the shell 2 must obviously be excluded during any transposition and towing of the unit 1 together with the shell 2 attached thereto.
Those skilled in the art should understand that the shell 2 may be mounted onto the basic unit 1 either already by manufacturing such accommodation unit 1 or also subsequently, e.g. during appropriate reconstruction or by just upgrading of such unit 1. To this aim, appropriate shell 2 is prepared together with guiding members 32, and appropriate guiding rails 31 are mounted onto the unit 1 by simultaneously transposition of lights 18 and other accessories from the external surface of the basic unit 1 onto the external surface of the supplemental shell 2.
Said walls 21, 22, 23, 24 of the supplemental shell 2 preferably include a thermal- insulation layer 280, and when desired, at least one of them is furnished on its surface with various accessories like supplemental windows, ventilating recesses, solar energy collectors, heat exchangers, at least one aerial or similar telecommunication equipment, further with at least one protective or decorative or camouflage coating, or at least one banner or al least one traffic sign carrier or at least one carrier for a sporting requisite like a bicycle or a boat.
Upon the basic unit 1 is furnished with the guiding rails 31, then appropriate shell 2 together with accompanied blocking members 28 is selected and mounted onto the unit 1. When the shell 2 is mounted onto the unit 1 and blocked in appropriate position thereon, then both of them are ready for road transport by means of towing in a quite similar manner like towing of the unit as such is normally performed. When the unit 1 is placed in situ, then the shell 2 may be displaced in the transversal direction, by which a covered space is established adjacent to the unit 1, which by taking into account the volume and ground surface thereof practically corresponds to the ground surface and the volume of the unit 1 as such. When desired, such adjacent space may also be equipped with appropriate platform (not shown in the drawing), which may either be placed onto the ground or also attached to adequate locations on the unit 1 and/or the shell 2.
Each basic unit 1 is generally able to receive various shells 2, which may be prepared to this aim. Consequently, the first variation of the shell 2 may e.g. be quite simple and foreseen exclusively to protect the basic unit 1 against various meteorological impacts during the period, when the unit is not used. A further variation of the shell 2 may e.g. be provided with an extensive thermal insulation in order to enable using the unit 1 during the winter period. A still further variation of the supplemental shell 2 may for example enable ad hoc expansion of the sales or promotion surfaces, if the unit 1 is used as a mobile restaurant or a mobile store or a mobile exhibition booth, wherein the shell 2 may also be appropriately decorated in the area of visible external surfaces without any need on any modifications in the area of the unit 1 as such. Still further, in order to improve accommodation conditions the shell 2 may also be furnished with at least partially transparent top wall 23 or also optionally with any other wall 21, 22, 24. It is therefore obvious, that each of these variations may be easily added to the unit 1 without any need on any particular modifications, as soon as the guiding rails 31 and the belonging blocking members 28 are mounted onto the unit 1, which is however relatively simple and feasible without any doubt.
Such an approach in accordance with the present invention is not doubt applicable also in the field of motorhomes. In such a case the basic accommodation unit 1 consists of a chassis 10', which is equipped with an autonomous power means, in particular an internal combustion engine, as well as of a box-like body 10", which is attached to said chassis 10' and generally consists of at least a rear wall 12, top wall 13 and side walls 14, 15, which together form the accommodation unit 1, which moreover comprises at least one door 17 and optionally also at least one window 16 located in the area of said walls 12, 13, 14, 15. Also in this case the basic accommodation unit 1 is surrounded in the area of its top wall 13 and/or its rear wall 12 and just one side wall 14 with a supplemental shell 2, the silhouette of which in the longitudinal vertical plane is adapted to the silhouette of the unit 1 along the same plane in such an extent, that the shell 2 may be displaced in the transversal direction perpendicularly with respect to the previously mentioned plane along the unit 1 by means of guiding means 31, 32, which are available on the unit 1 and the shell 2.
To this aim, the basic unit 1 is equipped with appropriate number of horizontal guiding members 31, which extend in the transversal direction parallel to each other and are arranged in the area of the chassis 10' and/or the rear wall 12 and/or the top wall 13, and are moreover adapted to cooperate with complementary guiding members 32, which are available on the internal surfaces of the shell 2, which is consequently displaceable in the transversal direction of the unit 1 thanks to cooperation of said guiding members 31 of the unit 1 and guiding members 32 of the shell 2, by which said shell 2 may then be fixed in each desired position on the unit 1 by means of adequate blocking members 28. Said shell 2 preferably comprises a bottom panel 20, which is attached to the base unit 1 or to guiding members 32.
When used on the classic motorhome, said supplemental shell 2 consists of a rear wall 22, a top wall 23 and a single side wall 24, and moreover also of a front wall 21, which is however attached to the side wall 24 or optionally to the bottom panel 20 or to the top wall 23, and is preferably connected with said side wall 24 with the possibility of being pivoted around the vertical axis. Said shell 2 of quite practical reasons comprises at least one window 26, which is positioned and shaped in accordance with each corresponding window 16 of the base unit 1. Still further and quite analogously like in the embodiment according to Figs 1 - 9 at least one of the disposable walls 21, 22, 23, 24 of the shell 2 includes at least one layer 280 of a thermal insulation material, or at least one of these walls 21, 22, 23, 24 consists of at least partially translucent material, and moreover the shell 2 may also be equipped with optionally applicable supporting legs 29. Also in this case said shell 2 may be furnished on its external surface with at least one accessory, which is selected from the group, which includes supplemental windows, ventilating recesses, solar energy collectors, heat exchangers, aerials or similar telecommunication equipment, further protective or decorative or camouflage coatings, self-adhesive labels, advertising banners, traffic sign carriers, and carriers for a sporting requisite like a bicycle or a boat.
A mobile accommodation unit according to Figs. 13 to 16 actually presents a modification of a classic cargo container for the purposes of accommodation therein. In this particular case said container, namely a basic accommodation unit
1, consists at least of a front wall 11, a rear wall 12, a top wall 13, side walls 14, 15 as well as of an appropriately rigid bottom panel 10. Said unit 1 is surrounded - except in the area of its bottom side and side wall 15 - with a supplemental shell 2, the silhouette of which within the longitudinal vertical plane matches appropriately to the silhouette of the unit 1 within the same plane, that the shell is 2 displaceable in the transversal direction thereof i.e. perpendicularly with respect to the previously mentioned plane, preferably by means of guiding members 31, 32 available both on the unit 1 and the shell 2. Said shell 2 in this particular embodiment comprises a pivot panel 20, 23, which may be pivoted around the horizontal axis and is attached either to the top wall 13 of the basic unit 1 (Fig. 13) or to the bottom panel 10 of the unit 1 (Fig. 14). Said guiding members 31, 32 may generally be foreseen at least in the area of the top wall 13 of the basic unit 1 and the top wall 23 of the shell 2, or at least in the area of front walls 10, 20 of the unit 1 and of the shell 2 as well as of the rear walls 12, 22 of the unit 1 and of the shell
2, which is shown in Fig. 15. In addition, the top wall 23 of the shell 2 may also be elbowed (Fig. 16) in a direction away from the ground or from the bottom panel 20, when appropriate. Besides, said supplemental shell 2 may be furnished on its external surface with at least one accessory, which is selected from the group, which includes supplemental windows, ventilating recesses, solar energy collectors, heat exchangers, aerials or similar telecommunication equipment, further protective or decorative or camouflage coatings, self-adhesive labels, advertising banners, traffic sign carriers, and carriers for a sporting requisite like a bicycle or a boat.
