Abstract

In a recessed section region on the side of one main surface of a silicon substrate (100) in a composite optical waveguide, a first region (141) and a second region (142), each of which contains silica as a main component, are arranged. A silicon thin line (300) composed of semiconductor is arranged to extend in proximity to the first region (141). In the recessed section region, the first region (141) relatively exists inside, and the second region (142) relatively exists outside. The refractive index of the first region (141) is higher than that of the second region (142), and the refractive index of the silicon thin line (300) is higher than that of the first region (141).
