Abstract
A lighting device (100) includes a housing (104, 112) with a rear portion separated from a front portion, which separation defines a volume therebetween. The device (100) further includes a polarized plug (102) rotatably attached to the rear portion, and a light source (110), at least partially located in the volume, that is illuminated with power received through the polarized plug (102). An orientation of the polarized plug (102), with respect to the housing (104), is rotabably adjustable so as to correspond to an orientation of a polarized outlet for insertion of the polarized plug (102) into the polarized outlet.
Claims
1. A lighting device ( 100), comprising: a housing (104, 112), including a rear portion separated from a front portion, which separation defines a volume therebetween; a polarized plug (102) rotatably attached to the rear portion, and a light source (110), at least partially located in the volume, that is illuminated with power received through the polarized plug (102); wherein an orientation of the polarized plug (102), with respect to the housing (104,
112), is rotabably adjustable so as to correspond to an orientation of a polarized outlet for insertion of the polarized plug (102) into the polarized outlet.
2. The device of claim 1, further including: a second housing (120) that removably mounts to a top portion of the housing (112), the second housing (120) including an aperture; a lens retainer (122) that removably inserts into the aperture; a lens (124), which is secured to the second housing (120) by the lens retainer (122), wherein the lens (124) is shaped to provide a selected light dispersion and/or focusing pattern for light emitted by the light source (110).
3. The device of claim 2, wherein the light source (110) protrudes out of the first housing (104, 1 12) and extends into the second housing (120).
4. The device of one of claims 2 to 3, further including: a transparency slot positioned between the lens (124) and the light source (1 10); and a transparency (126) that removably inserts into the transparency slot (119).
5. The device of claim 4, wherein the transparency (126) includes at least one of a color or a graphic.
6. The device of claim 4, further including:
26 a background slot (118) positioned behind the transparency (126), wherein the light source (110) resides between the transparency (126) and the background slot (118); and a background card (128) that removably inserts into the background slot.
7. The device of claim 6, wherein the background card (128) includes a graphic.
8. The device of one of claims 1 , 2, 3, 4, and 6, further including: a concentric groove located on one of the rear portion or the plug (102); and a rib located on the other one of the rear portion or the plug (102); wherein the rib is configured to move freely within the groove.
9. The device of claim 8, wherein the plug (102) rotates with respect to the rear portion when the rib moves in the groove.
10. The device of one of claims 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6, wherein the plug (102) includes at least one of a material on an exterior surface or a gripping feature that facilitate gripping the plug (102).
11. The device of one of claims 1 , 2, 3, 4, and 6, further including a keeper plate (106) attached to the plug (102) through an aperture in the rear portion, wherein the keeper plate (106) rotates with the plug (102) and secures the plug (102) in the device (100).

The device of claim 11, wherein the keeper plate (106) includes: a detent ; and a plurality of grooves, each one corresponding to a different rotational position, wherein the detent is configured to selectively engage the grooves, thereby holding the plug (102) at a rotational position corresponding to the engaged groove.

The device of claim 11 , wherein the keeper plate ( 106) includes: a plurality of detents, each one corresponding to a different rotational position; and a groove, wherein each detent is configured to engage the groove, and the plug (102) is held at a rotational position corresponding to the detent engaging the groove.
14. The device of claim 12, wherein the rotational position corresponds to 0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, or 270 degrees.
15. The device of one of claim 12, wherein the keeper plate (106) includes a stop that prevents rotation beyond 360 degrees.
16. The device of one of claims 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6, further including a latch (116) operatively connected to the housing (104) that interacts with the keeper plate (106).
17. The device of claim 16, wherein the latch (116) includes: a latch bar; a movable pushbutton; and a spring, wherein the pushbutton extends outward via an opening of the housing (104), and the latch bar is generally perpendicular to an innermost surface of the pushbutton, extends a distance away from the surface, and is configured to normally engage the keeper plate (106) within a detent of the keeper plate (106).
18. The device of claim 17, wherein pressing the latch (116) permits movement of the keeper plate (106) and the plug (102) relative to the housing (104).
19. The device of claim 17, wherein the latch bar includes: a vertical column rising from an inside surface of the pushbutton; and a hook, wherein the hook engages a groove of the keeper plate (106) when the pushbutton is in a first rest position.
20. The device of claim 19, wherein the hook moves inwardly toward a center of the keeper plate (106) and out of the groove when the pushbutton is depressed.

21. The device of claim 17, wherein the plug (102) rotates only when the pushbutton is depressed.
22. The device of claim 17, wherein the plug (102) is prevented from rotating when the pushbutton is released.
23. The device of claim 19, further including a spring that urges the hook into a groove when the pushbutton is released, thereby locking the plug (102) in a position.
24. The device of one of claims 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, further including: a circuit board (108); and a pair of wires that electrically connect to the circuit board (108) and the plug (102), wherein the light source (110) is a light emitting diode and is mounted to the circuit board (108).
25. The device of claim 24, wherein the circuit board (108) includes a driver circuit that modifies a received input voltage into direct current power for illuminating the light source (110).
26. The device of claim 24, wherein the circuit board (108) includes light sensing circuitry that detects light intensity and adjusts illumination of the light source (110) according to the detected intensity.
27. The device of claim 24, wherein the circuit board (108) includes light sensing circuitry that detects light intensity and turns off the light source (110) according to the detected intensity.
28. The device of claim 24, wherein the circuit board (108) and the light source (110) are located in the volume.
29. A lighting device (100), comprising: a first housing (104) including:
29 a light source (110); a plug (102) that receives power that powers the light source (110); and a circuit board (108) that electrically connects the light source (110) and the plug; a second housing (120) operatively connected to the first housing (104), the second housing (120) including: a lens (124); a transparency (126) located between the lens (124) and the light source (110), wherein the transparency (126) includes at least one of a color or a graphic; and a background (128) located behind the light source (110), wherein the background
(128) includes a graphic.
30. The lighting device of claim 29, wherein the plug (102) is polarized.
31. The lighting device of one of claims 29 to 30, wherein the plug (102) is rotatably attached to the first housing (104).
32. The lighting device of one of claims 29 to 30, wherein an orientation of the plug (102), with respect to the first housing (104), rotabably adjusts to correspond to an orientation of a polarized outlet for proper insertion of the plug (102) into the polarized outlet.
33. The lighting device of one of claims 29 to 30, wherein the plug (102) rotates through an angle of 360 degrees or less.
34. The lighting device of one of claims 29 to 30, wherein the plug (102) rotates through an angle of about 180.
35. The lighting device of one of claims 29 to 30, wherein the light source (110) includes a light emitting diode.
36. The lighting device of one of claims 29 to 30, further including a latch (116) that holds plug ( 102) at an angular position.

A method, comprising: rotating a pair of electrical contacts (230, 232, 306) of a device (100, 200, 300), with respect to the device (100, 200, 300), from a first angular position to a second angular position to orient the electrical contacts (230, 232) of the device (100, 200, 300) in accordance with an orientation of a polarized electrical output, wherein the pair of electrical contacts (230, 232) includes different sized electrical contacts.
38. The method of claim 37, wherein the angle between the first and second angular positions is one of about 90, 180, or 270 degrees.
39. The method of claim 37, wherein the electrical contacts (230, 232) are rotated with respect to a lens (124, 320) of the device (100, 300).
40. A method, comprising: releasing a latch that holds a pair of different sized electrical contacts (230, 232) at a first angular position with respect to a housing (104) of a lighting device (100, 200); rotating the electrical contacts (230, 232) to a second angular position with respect to the light source (1 10) in accordance with an orientation of different sized sockets of a polarized electrical output; and activating the latch to hold the pair of different sized electrical contacts (230, 232) at the second angular position.
41. The method of claim 40, further including diffusing light emitted from a light source (1 10) of the lighting device (100, 200) via a lens (124, 320).
42. The method of claim 40, wherein the light traverses a transparency (126) positioned between the light source (110) and the lens (124).
43. The method of claim 42, wherein the transparency (126) includes at least one of a color or a graphic.

44. The method of one of claims 40 to 43, farther including reflecting the light emitted from the light source (110), from a background card (128) located behind the light source (110), towards the lens (124, 320).
45. The method of one of claims 40 to 41, wherein the light source (110) is a five millimeter white light emitting diode.
46. The method of one of claims 40 to 41, further including regulating received power to supply suitable power to the light source (1 10).
47. An electrical device (200), comprising: a rear housing (204); a polarized plug (202) rotatably attached to the rear portion, wherein the polarized plug (202) includes: a first prong (232) of a first size; and a second prong (230) of a second different size; and a keeper plate (206) attached to the plug (202) through an aperture (238) in the rear housing (204), wherein the keeper plate (206) secures the plug (102) in the device (200), and the polarized plug (202) rotates, with respect to the rear housing (204), to align the first and second prongs (230, 232) with complementary sockets of a polarized outlet.
48. The device of claim 47, wherein the keeper plate (206) includes: at least one detent (242, 244); and at least one groove, wherein the detent (242, 244) engages the groove, thereby holding the plug (102) a rotational position corresponding to the engaged groove.
49. The device of claim 48, wherein the rotational position corresponds to 0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, or 270 degrees.
50. The device of one of claims 47 to 49, further including:
32 a circuit board (208); and a pair of wires (236, 234) that electrically connect to the circuit board (208) and the plug (202), wherein circuit board (208) provides power to illuminate a light source.
51. The device of one of claims 47 to 49, further including: a circuit board (208); and a pair of wires (236, 234) that electrically connect to the circuit board (208) and the plug (202), wherein circuit board (208) provides power to illuminate a charge a battery.
52. A lighting device (300), comprising: a rear housing enclosure (302), including capture slots (330); a light source (312) located in the rear housing enclosure (302); and an intermediate housing (316), including: connection tabs (318) that removably attach to the capture slots (330) of the rear housing (302), wherein the intermediate housing (316) is selectively oriented in one of a plurality of angular positions with respect to the rear housing (302).
53. The lighting device of claim 52, further comprising: an electrical circuit board (304) located in the enclosure (302), wherein the board (304) includes: at least one prong (306) on a first side that extends out of a first side of the rear housing (302); and circuitry (308) located on an opposite side of board (304) and in electrical communication with the at least one prong (306), wherein the light source (312) is electrically coupled to the opposite side of the board (304).
54. The lighting device of claim 53, wherein the circuitry (308) converts input power received via the at least one prong (306) into power suitable for illumination and operation of the light source (312).

55. The lighting device of one of claims 52 to 54, wherein the intermediate housing (316) further includes an aperture (319) that permits light emitted by the light source (312) to pass in a direction away from the circuit board (304).
56. The lighting device of one of claims 52 to 54, further including a diffuser (320) attached to and positioned in front of the intermediate housing (316).
57. The lighting device of claim 56, further including a front housing (322) positioned in front of the diffuser (320) and attached to the intermediate housing (316) and/or the diffuser (320).
58. The lighting device claim 56, further including a transparency (324) positioned in front of the diffuser (320).
59. The lighting device of claim 58, wherein the transparency (324) includes at least one of a color or a graphic.
60. The lighting device claim 58, further including a transparent windowpane (326) positioned in front of the transparency (326).
61. The lighting device of claim 60, wherein the transparent windowpane (326) protects the transparency (324) from environmental particulate.
62. The lighting device of one claim 60, further including a retainer (328) positioned in front of the transparent windowpane (326) and attached to the front housing to secure the transparency (324) and the transparent windowpane (326) to the device (300).
63. A lighting device (400), comprising: a housing (402) that houses one or more batteries; a head portion (404), including:
34 a light source (405) powered by power supplied by the one or more batteries; a first portion (406) with a lens (412) and a transparency (414) and coupled to the housing (420); and a second portion (408) slidably mounted to the first portion, wherein the second portion (408) slides between a first position in which light emitted by the light source (405) is directed out of the first portion (408) and a second position in which the light emitted by the light source (405) is directed out of the second portion (406) such that the light traverses the transparency (414) and the lens (412).
64. The lighting device of claim 63, wherein the transparency (414) includes at least one of a color or a graphic.
65. The lighting device of one of claims 63 to 64 , wherein the lighting device is a flashlight.
66. The lighting device one of claims 63 to 64, wherein the lens (412) diffuses the light.
