Abstract

The invention relates to apparatus, in the form of a nozzle arrangement (10) for a fuel pump, for controlling dispensing of fuel into the fuel tank of a vehicle. The nozzle arrangement includes, as an integrated unit connectable to a fuel supply hose of a fuel pump, a dispensing nozzle, a trigger mechanism (24) and a guard formation (26) that peripherally protects the trigger mechanism. The guard formation defines a plurality of accessible cavity- type spaces (44, 46, 48) therein, these spaces defining access openings that lead into the spaces and that face the trigger mechanism. The spaces provide for the location of components of a fuel dispensing system, for controlling the dispensing of fuel from an associated fuel pump, therein, in a configuration in which these components are effectively protected against being damaged or tampered with. The components can include communication components and a battery.

Claims

received by the International Bureau on 23 december 2008 (23.12.2008)CLAIMS
1. A nozzle arrangement for a fuel pump, which includes, as an integrated unit coππectable to a fuel supply hose of a fuel pump:
a number of components of a fuel dispensing system for controlling the dispensing of fuel from the fuel pump into the fuel tank of a vehicle, the components including;
a) a first communication means for communicating with communication means on a vehicle for identifying the vehicle;
b) a second communication means for communicating with communication means at a remote control station;
c) control circuitry for controlling the operation of the first and the second communication means; and
d) a power supply means.
a dispensing nozzle;
a trigger mechanism; and
a guard formation peripherally protecting the trigger mechanism and defining a plurality of accessible cavity-type spaces therein within which the components of the fuel dispensing system are carried.
2. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in Claim 1 , in which the accessible cavity-type spaces define access openings that lead into the spaces and that face the trigger mechanism.
3. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which each cavity-type space is configured to accommodate at least one of the components of the fuel dispensing system therein in a configuration in which the component is removable and replaceable.
4. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in anyone of the preceding claims, in which each cavity-type space is configured to accommodate a particular one of the components of the fuel dispensing system therein.
5. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, in which the first communication means is an RF antenna and in which the RF antenna is located in a cavity-type space defined within the guard formation that, in use of the nozzle arrangement for dispensing fuel into the fuel tank of a vehicle, is disposed operatively nearest the vehicle to provide for the antenna to pick-up RFID signals from a RFID transmitter located on the vehicle.
6. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, in which the control circuitry includes a printed circuit board that incorporates a processor that can process vehicle identification information and other information picked up by the first communication means and provide for communication means of a remote control station.
7 A nozzle arrangement as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6, in which the power supply means is one of a replaceable and a rechargeable battery.
8. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in Claim 8, in which the battery is an encapsulated intelligent battery.
9. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in Claim 7 or Claim 8, in which the battery is located within a cavity-type space defined by the guard formation in a location thereof in which separation of the guard formation from the dispensing nozzle is required in order to provide access to the battery.
10 A nozzle arrangement as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9, which carries components providing for at least one of movement detection, nozzle use detection, magnet presence detection, battery level monitoring and status monitoring as required for use in a fuel dispensing system with which the nozzle arrangement can be operatively used.
11. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10, which carries components that provide for processing and storing information relative to vehicle usage, that can be gathered from vehicles when refuelling occurs, for vehicle management purposes.
