Abstract

An illuminator for illuminating an optical modulation element (3) performing optical modulation of illumination light incident on an effective surface (31) comprises a light source device (1) including a surface emission light source (12) and a photonic crystal (14), and an illumination optical system (2) consisting of at least two optical elements (21, 22) for illuminating the optical modulation element (3) with a light beam emitted from a light emitting surface (13) of the surface emission light source (12). The illumination optical system (2) enlarges the light emitting surface (13) of the surface emission light source (12) and forms the image thereof telecentrically on the effective surface (31) of the optical modulation element (3).
