Abstract

The presentation of the existing sign boards mainly use d what is called direct or indirect method for the object to express, and such interior desk stand and others have only been used to obtain indirect lighting effect. This invention improves incomplete reflection and refraction of colored light in the letters and symbols of the transparent plates in the old interior /exterior advertising and lighting display picture stand and previous engraving method (V-shape grooves). It now utilizes plane-scratch and figure-scratch engraving together. As a result, the sign can be revealed more colorfully and clearly with diverse cubic effects, using the total reflection and refraction of light which transmits through the plates. Also, a display board consisting of some transparent acrylic plastic plates laying up each other, a display picture stand, and an electric signboard with an altered LED at the back of it can be combined to show letters and pictures on-off light effects, which work as an advertising board and interior lighting display picture stand.

[DESCRIPTION] [Invention Title] ADVERTISMENT DISPLAY BOARD AND LIGHTING
[Technical Field] <i> This invention is to display letters and pictures in different colors, engraved on a transparent plate, by illuminating light from the lamps of various kinds on the four edges of the plate, using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). It can also show moving pictures (illustration 7) when implemented on a few plates laid one upon another. Utilizing the characteristic of light, refraction and reflection, light is illuminated through the color sheets, which are adhered and set on two to four places on the edges of the transparent plates, onto the surface of the plates. [Background Art] <4> The previous advertising signboard (U.S. patent number 5124890), which employs V-shape engraving and edge-lighting method on its transparent acrylic plastic plates, displaying letters and pictures on the transparent plates by illuminating colored light from two spots on the side, required improvements in illuminating and engraving methods, 3D effect techniques, and lamps which generate great amount of heat and waste a lot of energy.

[Technical Problem] <6> As mentioned above, the existing acrylic plastic light board lacks in luminance, brightness and color changes, and the lamps emit too much heat in such airtight space and do not last long. Also its engraving method, 'GROOVES', lacks in various color expressions and cubic effects, which resulted in a low level of attention for advertising purpose than other advertising signboard media. Therefore, better technology has been required for advertising display boards and lighting devices, which can convey the contents of the advertisement more clearly and can attract more attention, and also artistic, longer lasting, and energy saving.

[Technical Solution] <8> As this invention is designed to solve such problems mentioned above, it employs plane-scratch, figure-scratch engraving (illustration 10), and sand blast method. It applies to each individual lamp (CCFL/EEFL and LED) and a micro slim PLC on the edges of each transparent plate, producing over 20 different changes in color and diverse cubic effects on a few transparent plates laid next to each other. It is energy saving and environmentally friendly. Also, the lamps last longer and there is no wane in them with time. The transparent signboard, which is organized by laying a few transparent acrylic plastic plates next to each other, is combined with a hexagonal LED electric signboard (consisting of a hexagonal transparent LED cap and LED). They together show what the hexagonal LED electric signboard is to display on the front transparent board very clearly. This technology is characterized by applying it to various items such as lighting signboards which displays a wide range of advertisement, mirrors which show photos and 3D pictures, interior lighting picture frame stands, ordinary lighting devices, emergency exit signs, floor advertising in buildings and commercial advertising, and lighting on the ceiling or floor of a vehicle(cars, buses, and etc.).

It is held up by a frame(21) and can be operated with or without the front advertising board. For the front advertising board, white packing(14) and a lamp partition(lδ) are inserted in four places between the edges of the transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4), creating space for laying them up one next to another. For the edges of each transparent acrylic plastic plate(2, 3, and 4), two to three particular division faces(2c, 3c, and 4c) must be processed accurately the same. Also, two to three segments(2c, 3c, and 4c) are precisely processed from the four faces of the above transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4), each segment (2c, 3c, and 4c) of the processed transparent plates produce about 20 different colors from the color bands which are combinations of thin lines in color, luminosity and hue, and white packing(14) and color reflector(7), installed on and between the edges of the above transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4) prevent from yielding water blisters of the transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4) and forms space for laying up the transparent plates to express cubic effects. Besides, lamp partition(18) is equipped on the illumination lamp temporarily installed on the above signboard frame(l) body and each four faces of the transparent plates. Using PLC, this can show the same letters, pictures, color changes (from A color to B color), and animation effects on each plateϋ 1 lustration 7). Likewise the sign to be displayed on each of the above transparent acrylic plastic plates; plane-scratch engraving on unit area or figure-scratch engraving(17) is processed to function as a guide light panel. Color sheets or scotchcal marking films(15) are adhered and piled up on the front and back of the engraving(17), so clear color effects and improved luminance can be achieved during both day and night time. This technology can be implemented in an interior display stand, using scotchcal marking films. Furthermore, a gap of 5mm is created between the edge of the above sign board frame(l) body and the lamp(6), to cool off the heat from the lamp(6). For protection and functional improvement of the display surface(5), a half mirror(19) colored plastic or transparency-enhancing acrylic protector is attached.
<37> Using such engraving methods as figure-scratch (illustration 10) and plane-scratch engraving in this invention, the function and variation of the guide light panel produce pastel effect and enable to express various cubic effects, especially cubic depth effect, by overlapping the plates. On the other hand, when the opaque rear board(8) and color reflector(7) are removed, display surface and its backside become a complete transparent advertising board. A working example of this invention in details is as follows.
<38> As in illustration 1 and 2 which are front plan of a lighting advertising board and partial diagonal plan of signboard, respectively. This advertising board is consists of more than three acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4) which are laid one next to another. Lamps(6) where lamp partitions(lδ) are installed for incident light into each transparent acrylic plastic plate(2, 3, and 4) and the micro-slim PLC(Il) which controls the operation of the lamp(6) are adhered closely to each other and supported by the display board frame(l) and opaque rear board(8).
<39> In this invention, the above transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4) are not laid one next to another to touch each other. White packing(14) and lamp part it ion(18) are inserted in the space of 0.5mm to 3mm between the four edges of the plates like shown in illustration 3. The above white packing(14) forms space for each transparent acrylic plate(2, 3 and 4), and this prevents formation of water blisters between plates that is caused by moisture contained in the transparent plates or flew in from outside. Also, this space between plates guarantees cubic effects, which are a very important factor in advertisement. By varying piling structure and engraving method of the transparent plates, it is explained in detail next.
<40> Lamp partitions(lδ) are installed between the transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4), and PLC(Il) controls the four lamps on the edges of the plates. Consecutively, letters and pictures engraved on each transparent acrylic plastic plate(2, 3,and 4) are displayed in totally different colors. In the meantime, animation effects (illustration 7) can be produced. Since the colored light is combined inside each transparent plate, this invention can produce more diverse colors more(about 20) than any other display media. On the front or back of the above transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4), engraving is done where corresponding to the letters and pictures to be demonstrated on the display surface(5). A color reflector(7) or mirror can be attached between the transparent acrylic plastic plates at the back (4) and opaque rear board(8).
<4i> The color reflector(7) attached on the back of the above transparent acrylic plastic plate (4) reflects light towards the front which is initially illuminated towards the back and forms a cubic effect. It is firmly supported by the signboard frame(l). When it is removed with the opaque rear board(8) if necessary, the entire advertising board becomes completely transparent (illustration 3-2), and also, a backside electric signboard can be added to this. As the four edges of transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4) each corresponding to each lamp(6) are the surfaces where light comes in. Each of them is precisely processed to produce segments, 2c, 3c, and 4c, in various shapes.
<42> As shown in illustration 3, the shapes of four edges of the transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4) normally have two to three segments. On the other hand, they can be processed so that two to three segments are the same like V shape, if needed. It is not limited to this, though. Likewise, the shapes of the edges of the transparent acrylic plastic plates have segments with several different angles unlike the existing lighting board which uses flat plane only.
<43> Figure-scratch engraving (illustration 10) on unit area of the display board is the key point of this invention, and this increases the amount of incident light and varies the path and diffused reflection condition of the light as it passes through, the refraction and reflection on the segments each in a different angle, and engraved area for demonstration, to obtain a number of different colors and expressions which could not be solved by the previous technology.
<44> Also, plane-scratch engraving(2a) and figure-scratch engraving(17) must maintain the rough surface produced by CNC(Computer Numerical Control) lathe in processing, and color presentation of the letters and pictures to display must look natural as wanted, by the reflection and refraction of the light shone to the signboard or display light stand, on the above display surface.
<45> As the color band of color sheet(13) on the segments(2c, 3c, and 4c) comprises combinations of thin and thick lines with different sets of color, luminosity, and hue, it is designed according to the adequate programs for the letters, pictures and their combinations to reveal on the lighting signboard. When the logo to present is too complicated, stronger luminance on the screen is required, a difference in luminance between the outer and center of the logo occurs because too much area is scratch-engraved, shown in the light transmission line in the transparent acrylic plastic plates (illustration 4), which is a disadvantage of the transparent acrylic plastic. <46> To solve this problem, the transparent acrylic plastic plates are manufactured in concave lens shape, the letters and pictures are scratch-engraved on the curved surface. Then, depth of the grooves can be adjusted and gets deeper towards the center of the transparent plates. As a result, when lamps(6) are illuminated onto the segments of transparent plates(2, 3 and 4), more than half of the light gets reflected and refracted towards the center of the plates, not the entire light reflected in the outer of the transparent grooves. This makes each transparent plate have equal amount of luminance, settling the difference in luminance which is generated by even depth of the grooves, and intensifies the luminance on the screen. Illustration 4 demonstrates a profile of grooves(2c) on the three segments of plastic plates. In illustration 4 as an instance, for each segment edge of the transparent acrylic plastic plates, 2c-l, 2c-2, and 2c~3 use green, orange, and purple scotchcal marking films(13), respectively. That is, the colored light, which is radiated through the color layers, (2c-l), (2c~2), and (2c-3), is reflected or refracted in the grooves scratch- engraved on the surface of the acrylic plastic board, creating many different combined colors for the designed logo on the display surface of the lighting signboard. On the other hand, the space between the above lamp(6) and the segments(2c, 3c, and 4c) is for air circulation. This space between the lamps(6) and segments(2c, 3c, and 4c) and a small fan(28) prevent the segments from getting directly affected of the heat from the lamp(6) by air circulation inside, disperse the heat generated by the lamp, and expedite diffusion of the heat, which solves the existing problem caused by heat from lighting. Structured in this way, the light illuminated from the above lamp(6) transmits each color sheet(13) attached on each particular segment(2c, 3c, and 4c) to the inside of each transparent acrylic plastic plate(2, 3, and 4), gets reflected and refracted on plane-scratch(2a) and figure-scratch(17) engraving, functioning as each engraving (2a, 3a, 3b, 4a, and 4b) and a guide light panel, and expresses the sign as designed, combinations of letters and pictures(film(15)), on the display surface(5) of the lighting signboard.
<47> Because no other letters or pictures in any color of light are projected on the display surface(5) from the rest of the transparent plates except engraved area, it provides background lighting in a state without any differences in luminosity or hue, clearly revealing designed sign only. When the color reflector(7) and opaque rear board(8) are removed, it becomes a perfect transparent board, more neat and clear (illustration 3-2).
<48> Besides, the scratch engraving on the transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4) as shown in illustration 3, is utilized on the back(2a) of the transparent acrylic plastic plate (2), whose front side is the display surface(5), and on both front and back(3a, 3b, 4a, and 4b) of the transparent acrylic plastic plates (3 and 4). Also, if you engrave and overlap the same letters and pictures on the same location of each transparent plate (2 and 3), and by illuminating through different color sheets, the same letters and pictures in different colors to the front and back are shown on the display surface. The engraving is done using plane-scratch engraving method (2a, 3b, and 4b) or figure-scratch engraving (illustration 10).
<49> For the transparent acrylic plastic plate (2), on the display surface(5) can be engraved; however, if the engraved area on the display surface(5) is covered with dust, it cannot function fully as a signboard. To avoid this, a transparent plastic plate or color acrylic plastic, whose surface is enhanced by special processing, can be adhered or inserted to the display surface.
<50> This invention implemented as the above is not only used for the lighting advertising board but also applied to many different interior items which present various color effects and moving pictures such as a lighting desk or wall clock dial. Lighting picture frame using a half mirror is a new technology in interior design. Also, it can be utilized as a display board on the floor inside a building, brick of side walk display board outside, and advertising display illumination on the ceiling or floor in all sorts of vehicles such as cars and buses.
<5i> Accordingly, I will briefly explain another example of this invention. When displaying a 2D or 3D portrait on a lighting desk picture frame, figure-scratch engrave (illustration 10) the portrait on the front face of the transparent acrylic plastic plate (3) functioning as a guide light panel or on the given unit area of semitransparent acrylic plastic plate. Next, stick a reflecting film which concentrates reflected light from the guide light panel onto the front surface of the transparent acrylic plastic plate (3), and adhere the photo film or the plate with the 2D or 3D portrait engraved closely to the front face. Now, when light is illuminated from the lamp(6), the picture on the film or 2D/3D portrait is displayed, and it gives the interior of a room lighting effect. It is designed to display different pictures by replacing the photo film. The figure-scratch methods used for the guide light panel are CNC milling, laser, and sand blast. When required stronger luminance, another external lamp(6) can be installed and used inside a building or as a light inside a car. It can also be used for dials, symbols, numbers, logos, writings, pictures, and characters on many different clocks and these clocks become lighting and advertising display clocks and can be installed on indoor floors as well as outdoors. Furthermore, when specially manufactured half mirror is attached on the front of the display surface, it can be used as a mirror at ordinary times and lighting device when needed, showing a picture or clock on it. Additionally, an ionic air cleaner, security camera, alarm, and etc. can be utilized as a supplementary function. For indoor floor advertisement, a separate protector is either partly or entirely installed over the above lighting display board, balanced for the existing or newly installed floors, so that the surface of the board does not get damaged by people walking on it and still displays letters and pictures pretty well with illumination effect. In the same way, it can be used as a new concept, brick of side walk display board outdoors.
<52> For instance, to display 'KOREA CHINA' (as in illustration 1) on the lighting advertisement board consisting of three transparent plates (as in illustration 2), the letters are engraved in the following way. Engraved K0R(2a) of 'KOREA' on upper part of the transparent acrylic plastic plate (2), EA(3a) of 'KOREA'on the transparent acrylic plastic plate (3) which aligns with K0R(2a) on the above transparent acrylic plastic plate (2), CHI(4a) of 'CHINA'on the front bottom of the transparent acrylic plastic plate (4), NA(4b) on the back bottom of the same transparent acrylic plastic plate (4) which aligns with CHI(4a) on the front of the plate, all together reveal 'KOREA CHINA' on the display surface utilizing the reflection and refraction of light. After engraved like this, the transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4) are precisely processed to create particular segments(2c, 3c, and 4c). Color sheets(13) are elaborately cut for the designed letters and pictures to show and attached on the segments. When light is illuminated from lamps(6), it is reflected and refracted in the colors required for the above letters and pictures engraved on the transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4). Next is a detailed example of color application.
<53> To three precisely processed places on the side of the segment (2c) of the transparent acrylic plastic plate (2), are green, orange, and purple color sheets cut and adhered, to two places on the side of the segment (3c) of the transparent acrylic plastic plate (3) both red color sheets, and to two places on the side of the segment (4c) of the transparent acrylic plastic plate (4) brown color sheet(13) for the letters CHI(4a) and blue for NA(4b). Now, when the lamp(6) is switched on, three different colors, green, orange, and purple are shone into the letters K0R(2a) on the transparent acrylic plastic plate (2), and red into EA(3a) on the transparent acrylic plastic plate (3). Therefore, the letters 'KOREA' on upper part of the board (illustration 1) are expressed in four colors, green, orange, purple, and red. Respectively, brown and blue light are shone in CHI (4a) and NA(4b) on the transparent acrylic plastic plate (4), and the letters 'KOREA CHINA1 in illustration 1 are displayed in six different and clear colors. Likewise, this is one way of displaying the same letters or symbols scratch-engraved on several transparent plates which are laid up next to each other. Different colors are used on each segment(2c, 3c, and 4c) of the transparent plates, and light is illuminated from the lamp(6). Another way is laying up the following plates one next to another, the transparent acrylic plastic plate (2) which is line-scratch engraved(lθ) , transparent acrylic plastic plate (3) functioning as a guide light panel which is figure-scratch engraved(17) with color sheets(15), and the transparent acrylic plastic plate (4) with color sheets(15) cut and pasted on the back of it. In this case, letters or symbols can be expressed more clearly as shaped of the cut color sheets in the daytime as well as at night, with improved luminance and a cubic effect which makes the object to look like going deeply inside. As a result, it enables to have a wide range of changes in color, improve luminance, control brightness, and achieve cubic effects. Also, it saves transparent plates as both the front and back of the transparent plates are engraved, and lasts longer as the lighting advertising board being semi permanent.
<54> Lighting order and luminance of the lamps(6) are controlled by PLC(Il) to employ more diverse color compositions and expressions, using color sheets(13) which are pasted on the edges and segments (2c, 3c, and 4c) of the transparent acrylic plastic plates (2, 3, and 4).
<55> Namely, different color sheets(13) are adhered to each edge and segment (2c, 3c, and 4c) of the transparent acrylic plastic plates(2, 3, and 4); for example, red, blue, orange, and yellow. As each lamp(6) illuminating each color sheet(13) is controlled by PLC(Il), scratch-engraved sign on each transparent acrylic plastic plate (2, 3, and 4) is revealed in a single color or many differently combined colors. On the other hand, the pictures in illustration 7 (a), (b), and (c) can be animated with color changes in a regular cycle.
<56> As lighting for animation used in this invention is controlled by PLC(Il), turning lamps(6) on and off and producing fade-in and fade-out effects, the light separated by four edges and segments of the transparent plates is shone in different colors at different times. In the meantime, it can produce animations (illustration 7) as well. With combinations of these colors, can display letters and pictures in wonderful colors.
<57> That is, moving pictures of an animal are engraved on three separate transparent acrylic plastic plates, (2), (3), and (4), and then totally different color lights are shone in four edges of the plates and segments in order, (b) after (a), as in illustration 7, and it animates the movement of the animal as in illustration 7(c). This invention implemented such way can be used for more effective advertising and lighting in interior design, company or brand logos, sales promotion advertisement, lighting stands, and s.many other

[Mode for Invention]
<59> This invention, as an electric advertising signboard, displays letters, pictures, and animations with various on-off effects of colored light in hexagonal shape from a LED lamp, which is covered by a hexagonal cap of glass, crystal, or acrylic plastic, combined with suitable plates for its size and shape, and controlled by PLC, displaying a sign not only on a flat surface. When this part is attached to the back of the front side signboard explained above, they together become a more elegant and fresh advertising medium with attracting more attention. This can be operated either independently or applied to other objects indoors and outdoors. The backside hexagonal signboard with a LED capped by a transparent material such as acrylic plastic in hexagonal shape creates a hexagonal display surface. It is composed as follows:
<60> I shall explain with acrylic plastic, of glass, crystal, and acrylic plastic as transparent materials. As described in illustration 1, 2, 8, and 9, a LED lamp is fixed on the board(26), and a transparent acrylic plastic LED cap(23) with a hexagonal display surface(24) is inserted in the hexagonal cap fixing groove(31) and set on the board(26). A back cover(27) and a small fan(28) are attached to the fixed board(26), and PLC(Il) connected with the LED lamp(22) is firmly supported by the front advertising board frame(l) and the back one(21). These two board frames, (1) and (21), have a coupling ring(30) which couples and fixes a ventilator(29) with the advertising board.
<6i> Also, the transparent hexagonal acrylic plastic cap for the LED lamp is built up as a groove(25) on the front and back of the display surface where the LED lamp is inserted. The size of the cap is 0.8cm in diameter and 1.5cm in length, and the depth of the insertion groove(25) is about two thirds of the LED lamp. To transmit the light illuminated from the LED lamp(22) completely into the hexagonal cap surface(24), the inside of the hexagonal cap insertion groove(25) is scratched by sandpaper.
<62> This is shown in illustration 8 and 9, and the groove(31), in which stably sets the transparent plastic cap, is made of non-transparent material to avoid any light-related interference from the side.
<63> For an example of this as shown in illustration 1, 8, and 9, this is supposed to be combined with the front advertising board but can be operated independently depending on the purpose of its use. As in illustration 8, a transparent hexagonal cap and a 4-color LED lamp are set as a module in the non-transparent groove in beehive shape and the fixed board(26) and back cover(27) are firmly supported. Letters and pictures are fed by a remote control or computer, and controlled by PLC, expressing the hexagonal letters, pictures, and their combinations in at least four colors on the transparent hexagonal cap surface(24) as structured in illustration 1. It displays the same or different sign from the front advertising board and can be used either combined with the front board or separately. Also, an electric signboard with a LED lamp as a module without the above transparent hexagonal cap can be combined with the front transparent advertising board, mentioned above.

[Industrial Applicability] <65> This invention is environmentally friendly and much more energy saving than any other advertising media. Especially, it is the most adequate for regulations on the neon signboard and fluorescent lamp and night flashlight control in UN and many other countries. Therefore, it shall become an excellent product of new technology in commercial advertisement, lighting, and interior design.

<68> For the front advertising board with a few transparent plates(2, 3, and 4) of glass, crystal, or acrylic plastic, all sorts of lamps(6) such as CCFL, EEFL, LED, and DECO, which are installed irregularly depending on the required luminance on the display surface(5), on the four edges of the above transparent plates(2, 3, and 4), a light reflector as well as a lamp ρartition(18), and PLC(Il), all supported inside an opaque rear board and board frame, each transparent plate(2, 3, and 4) is standardized by cutting them with a saw in the same dimension, maintaining the uneven marks on the cut edges from sawing. Between these four edges and another four edges of the segments(2c, 3c, and 4c), are white packing(14), leaving about 0.5mm to 3mm between the plates laid up next to each other. Color sheets or scotchcal marking films(13) are cut and pasted on each edge for the letters, pictures, and their combinations to demonstrate on the display surface(5), and lamps(6) are installed on the four edges of the transparent plates. Letters and pictures are plane-scratch or figure-scratch engraved (illustration 10), based on the proportion of the object size in unit area on one or both sides of the above transparent plates(2, 3, and 4). Outlines are line-scratch engraved on the back of the transparent plate (2), and diverse shapes within the above outlines are figure-scratch engraved on the back of the transparent plate (3). Where corresponds to the engraving of the transparent plate (3) functioning as a guide light panel are a photo film(can be replaced) or semitransparent plastic picture plate engraved of a 2D or 3D portrait, and the letters and pictures can be displayed on a half mirror attached to the display surface. Many different writings and pictures can be displayed in a still or motion state by controlling the front lighting advertisement board, which functions as a advertising board in many different items such as lighting display picture frame stands, all sorts of clocks, and emergency exit indicators, on the ceiling and floor of a vehicle, and inside or outside _
a building, and LED display board, which is set as a module by a transparent LED cap(23) in diverse shape.

<70> As for claim 1, letters and pictures are engraved on the above transparent plates(2, 3, and 4) using line-scratch and plane-scratch engraving methods by CNC milling, laser, and sand blast techniques. On the transparent plate as a guide light panel, are letters and pictures figure-engraved in the unit area of them.

<72> As for claim 1, four edges of the above transparent plates(2, 3, and 4) maintain the uneven marks created by sawing them to be standardized, and the edges are precisely processed to create two to four segments(2c, 3c, and 4c). On the segments(2c, 3c, and 4c) and the transparent plates(2c, 3c, and 4c), are color bands which are combinations of lines with color, luminosity, and hue attached to display various colors, laying up the plates and the segments.

Where figure-scratch engraved, reflectional paper is cut to shape and adhered, using a guide light panel to reflect in specified area only.

<82> As for claim 1, The plane-scratch and figure-scratch engraved transparent plates(2, 3, and 4) and the lamps(6), using a guide light panel which expresses a photo film or 2D picture plate, are utilized for picture frames in various shapes. With a half mirror, they display signs or pictures on the mirror in all sorts of desk and wall clocks. The color or black and white photo film can be replaced. An interior lighting lamp, air fresher, surveillance camera, or alarm can be installed on the frame, and the lighting slim mirror and picture frame is set on a base rotatable by 360 degrees.
