Description
Description
METHOD FOR PROCESSING EMM IN TERMINAL WHERE DMB MODULE AND MOBILE COMMUNICATION MODULE IS
INCLUDED
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service method, and more particularly to a method for processing an Entitlement Management Message (EMM) according to the ON/OFF state of a DMB module in a terminal which includes the DMB module and a mobile communication module. Background Art
[2] Digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service is a broadcasting service for providing broadcast contents to a personal terminal or a vehicle terminal, which includes a DMB module and a mobile communication module, so that a subscriber who has subscribed to the DMB service can view or listen to various broadcast contents through the personal terminal or a vehicle terminal, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module.
[3] The DMB service has been developed from one-way service of providing broadcast contents to terminals, so that it becomes possible to allow viewers or listeners to join in a broadcast, i.e. to provide two-way service.
[4] Generally, since such DMB service is provided for a fee, the DMB service uses a conditional access system (CAS) for restricting the reception of subscribers. Such a CAS performs the reception restriction function by adjusting the viewing grade through a smart card (or a memory device corresponding to the smart card) mounted in a terminal, which includes a DMB module and a mobile communication module, and performs the security function of preventing a user from viewing DMB through illegal use of the smart card.
[5] The terminal, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module, receives a CAS message transmitted from a broadcasting network or mobile communication network, descrambles a scrambled broadcast signal by means of a control word (CW) included in an entitlement control message (ECM), and manages a subscriber's viewing qualification and viewing grade for charged channels through an entitlement management message (EMM).
[6] A terminal including a DMB module and a mobile communication module cannot receive a CAS message if the DMB module is in an OFF state, when the CAS message is transmitted all terminals every approximately thirty minutes. Therefore, there is a problem in that when a terminal has not received a CAS message, the terminal cannot
be timely granted a changed viewing qualification and a changed viewing grade for charged channels. Disclosure of Invention
Technical Problem
[7] Accordingly, the present invention has been made to solve the above-mentioned problem occurring in the prior art, and the present invention provides a method for receiving a conditional access system (CAS) message and processing an Entitlement Management Message (EMM), even if a digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) module is in an OFF state in a terminal which includes the DMB module and a mobile communication module. Technical Solution
[8] In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for processing an Entitlement Management Message (EMM) in a terminal which includes a digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) module and a mobile communication module, the method including the steps of: (a) receiving, by the terminal, a message including at least one EMM from a message system server; (b) extracting said at least one EMM from the received message, and transmitting said at least one EMM to the DMB module; (c) transmitting said at least one EMM to a conditional access (CA) module included in the DMB module; and (d) processing said at least one EMM by the CA module, and storing a result of the processing.
[9] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for processing an Entitlement Management Message (EMM) in a terminal which includes a digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) module and a mobile communication module, the method including the steps of: (a) receiving, by the terminal, a message including at least one EMM from a message system server; (b) determining whether the DMB module included in the terminal is in an ON state or an OFF state; (c) when the DMB module is in the ON state, extracting said at least one EMM from the message and transmitting said at least one EMM to a conditional access (CA) module included in the terminal, and when the DMB module is in the OFF state, switching the DMB module to the ON state, extracting said at least one EMM from the message, and transmitting said at least one EMM to the CA module; and (d) switching the DMB module to the OFF state when the transmission of said at least one EMM has been completed in step (c).
Advantageous Effects
[10] According to the EMM processing method of the terminal, which includes the
DMB module and the mobile communication module, based on the present invention, it is possible for the terminal to receive a CAS message and to process an EMM, even
if the DMB module of the terminal is in the OFF state. Brief Description of the Drawings
[11] FIG. 1 is a view illustrating the configuration of an EMM transmission system for digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention; and
[12] FIG. 2 is a flowchart illustrating an EMM processing method by a terminal, which includes a DMB module and a mobile communication module, according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
[13] Hereinafter, an exemplary embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[14] FIG. 1 is a view illustrating the configuration of a system for providing digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention.
[15] Referring to FIG. 1, the system includes a conditional access system (CAS) 220, a message system server 240, and a terminal 100, which includes a DMB module and a mobile communication module. The CAS 220 transmits a message which is related to a subscriber's viewing qualification and viewing grade for charged channels for broadcast contents. The message system server 240 transmits the message to the terminal 100 by using an out-of-band channel. The terminal 100 analyzes the message received through the out-of-band channel, and displays a broadcast signal transmitted through an in-band channel on a screen, based on the viewing qualification for broadcasting and the viewing grade for charged channels which are obtained through the analysis.
[16] The CAS 220 creates and transmits an EMM, which contains a serial number and a change history of a smart card mounted in the terminal 100 including the DMB module and the mobile communication module, to the terminal 100. Also, the CAS 220 emits a broadcast signal to the terminal 100, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module, through a broadcasting network 400.
[17] In addition, the CAS 220 manages the viewing qualification, the viewing grade for charged channels (e.g. a PPC channel, a PPV channel, etc.), a password, etc. through the EMM. Here, the EMM contains information about the viewing qualification and the viewing grade of the terminal 100, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module, and the serial number of a smart card. Therefore, only a terminal 100, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module, equipped with a smart card having a serial number identical to that included in the EMM changes information about the viewing qualification, the viewing degree of
charged channels, the password, etc.
[18] The message system server 240 first repackages a message transmitted from the
CAS 220 in a format suitable for transmission through a mobile communication network server 260 in order to transmit the message to the terminal 100, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module.
[19] The message system server 240 receives a result of an EMM transmission to the terminal 100, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module, from the mobile communication network server 260, and transmits the received result to the CAS 220 so that the CAS 220 can determine whether or not to retransmit the EMM to the terminal 100, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module.
[20] The mobile communication network server 260 transmits a message including the
EMM to the terminal 100 which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module, and transmits a result of the EMM transmission to the message system server 240.
[21] The terminal 100 includes the DMB module 140 and the mobile communication module 120 so as to implement both DMB service and mobile communication service.
[22] The mobile communication module 120 includes a device application module 122.
The mobile communication module 120 receives a message from the message system server 240 and the mobile communication network server 260, extracts an EMM from the received the received message (or extracts the EMM after storing the message), and transmits the extracted EMM to the DMB module 140.
[23] The DMB module 140 includes a DMB control module 142, a CA module 144, and a smart card 148. When a smart card serial number included in an EMM received by the DMB module 140 from the mobile communication module 120 is identical to the serial number of the smart card 148, the viewing qualification and a viewing degree of charged channels can be determined, and the DMB module 140 can receive and display a broadcast signal, which is transmitted through the broadcasting network 400, on a screen.
[24] The operation of the system having the aforementioned construction according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention will now be described.
[25] An EMM output from the CAS 220 is transmitted to the message system server 240 so that the EMM can be transmitted through an out-of-band channel to the terminal 100, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module. The out-of-band channel may be, for example, a mobile communication network.
[26] The message system server 240 repackages the EMM in a format suitable for transmission through the out-of-band channel, and transmits the repackaged EMM to the mobile communication network server (e.g. open Over-The-Air Server) 260. The
mobile communication network server 260 transmits a message including the EMM, which has been received from the message system server 240, to the terminal 100 including the DMB module and the mobile communication module (step 200). The message may be, for example, an Over The Air-Short Message Service (OTA_SMS) message.
[27] The terminal 100 which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module receives and stores the message in a memory (step 205). For example, when the terminal 100 which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module consecutively receives one or more messages during one session, the terminal 100 receives and stores the messages in regular sequence in the memory. When the terminal 100, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module, completes reception of the messages, the terminal 100 transmits a response message to the reception completion to the mobile communication network server.
[28] In this case, the terminal 100 extracts EMMs from the stored messages, and transfers the EMMs in regular sequence to the CA module 144 of the terminal 100 so that the CA module 144 can process the EMMs.
[29] As an application example, the device application module 122 of the terminal 100, which has received the messages, determines whether the DMB module 140 is in an ON state or an OFF state, and switches the DMB module 140 to the ON state when the DMB module 140 is in the OFF state.
[30] In this case, when the DMB module 140 is in the OFF state, the device application module 122 forcibly switches the DMB module 140 to the ON state so that the DMB module 140 can process the EMM. When completing the processing of the EMM, the DMB module 140 returns to the OFF state. When an error occurs while more than one EMM is being processed, the DMB module 140 stores the code of the occurring error and the occurrence time, and does not process following EMMs. The DMB module 140 transmits the stored error code and time to the message system server 240 upon receiving an Audit message.
[31] As an application example, it is possible for the device application module 122 to extract an EMM included in the message and to store the EMM.
[32] The device application module 122 transmits a result of reception of the message to the message system server 240, switches the DMB module 140 to an ON state so as to transmit the EMM when the DMB module 140 is in an OFF state (i.e. in a non-viewing state), and transmits the EMM when the DMB module 140 operates (steps 210, 215, 220 and 225). When the transmission of the EMM has been completed, the DMB module 140 returns to the OFF state.
[33] In this case, if there is a plurality of EMMs, the DMB module 140 is turned to the
OFF state after the EMMs are all transmitted to the DMB module 140.
[34] When the DMB module 140 is in the ON state, or has been switched to the ON state, the EMM is transmitted to the CA module 144 in the terminal 100 (step 230).
[35] As an application example, the EMM is transmitted to the CA module 144, it is checked whether or not a response message to the EMM is received, and a new message is transmitted after the response message has been received. Preferably, upon transmitting a plurality of messages, a new message may not be transmitted until a response message to a transmitted EMM message is received. The CA module 144 transmits the EMM to the smart card 148, and the smart card 148 determines whether or not a smart card serial number included in the EMM is identical to the serial number of the smart card 148 by comparing the two serial numbers with each other, and transmits a response message to the CA module 144 (steps 240 and 245).
[36] When the CA module 144 has received the response message from the smart card
148, the CA module 144 stores the received response message (step 250).
[37] Meanwhile, when the message system server 240 generates an Audit message in order to request a result of processing of an EMM, the CA module 144 of the terminal 100 transfers the response message to the DMB control module 142 in response to the Audit message, and the DMB control module 142 transmits the response message through the device application module 122 so as to transmit the response message to the message system server 240 (steps 260, 265 and 270).
[38] As described above, according to the EMM processing method of the terminal, which includes the DMB module and the mobile communication module, based on the present invention, it is possible for the terminal to receive a CAS message and to process an EMM, even if the DMB module of the terminal is in the OFF state.
[39] Although an exemplary embodiment of the present invention has been described for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.
