Abstract

Provided are a light diffusing base material, which efficiently eliminates luminance nonuniformity and has both high illuminance uniformity ratio and high luminance characteristics on a screen, and a planar light source which uses such base material and can be a direct backlight having high luminance and high illuminance uniformity ratio. The base material has an uneven shape wherein a top portion and a bottom portion are repeated, on at least one surface. The base material is composed of a material having a refraction index within a range of 1.45-1.65. When the direction wherein the top portion and the bottom portion are repeated is expressed as x, and the direction of the thickness of the base material as z, an angle ϑ of the uneven shape on an x-z plane is 55-85° or 95-125° at the bottom, and the inclination of a tangent line between the adjacent bottom portions is reduced in a direction where x increases.
