Description
Description
A HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCE WITH A PROGRAM SELECTING SWITCH ALLOWING CONFIRMATION OF
THE COMPLETED PROGRAM
[0001] The present invention relates to a household appliance wherein the user is informed of the program that is completed or still in process.
[0002] In household appliances wherein the program selection is made by a switch rotating around its axis with program symbols on the surrounding periphery, if the position of the switch is changed after the program starts functioning; the program in progress is not affected with this change. However, when the present program ends functioning, since the last position wherein the switch stops does not indicate the present program, either which program is completed cannot be discerned or the user has the impression that a wrong program is operated. This can result in the user operating the program again and thus losing time and energy. These problems are frequently encountered particularly when the switch for selecting programs is tempered by a child or unauthorized people without the supervision of the user.
[0003] For example in a washing machine, the user first selects the washing program for cotton and the spin speed, temperature etc. values for this program. After the washing machine starts operating in accordance with these selections, while washing goes on, the switch is triggered again by a child and the position of the switch is changed to synthetics program. In this case, the values previously selected by the user do not change and there is no change in the operation of the washing machine program. However the change in the position of the switch by the child can cause the user to have a misunderstanding about which washing program is over at the completion of the washing. When the cycle is over, the user is undecided about whether the cotton program or synthetics program was chosen.
[0004] In state of the art, the functions carried out during the operation of the household appliance can be monitored step by step. One of these is explained in the Great Britain Patent Application No GB2017341.
[0005] The object of the present invention is to design a household appliance comprising a display that enables the user to identify the completed program when the program is over.
[0006] The household appliance designed to fulfill the objective of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises an indicator enabling the user to identify the last selected program if any change is made in the position of the program selection switch while the program continues.
[0007] While the household appliance operates, if the switch is changed to a different position for example as a result of tempering by children, the indicator becomes passive. In other words, while the switch is aligned with the selected program, the indicator is active and when in another position, the indicator is passive. The change made in the position of the switch while the household appliance operates does not
affect the functioning of the selected program. [0008] When the position of the switch is changed again to be aligned with the initial position while the program runs or after the program is over, the indicator becomes active again. [0009] By means of the present invention, the correct program selected by the user can be identified after changes in the position of the switch are made while the program operates. Respectively, the user is prevented from being misguided as a result of the switch showing a wrong program due to changing of position while the household appliance operates. [0010] The household appliance designed to fulfill the objective of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[0011] Figure 1 - is the schematic view of a household appliance. [0012] Figure 2 - is the schematic view of a switch adjusted by the user and the indicator in an embodiment of the present invention. [0013] Figure 3 - is the schematic view of the switch and the indicator at the moment the switch is triggered to change position while the program operates. [0014] Figure 4 - is the schematic view of the switch triggered by the user while the program continues or is completed and the indicator that is illuminated again when changed to the initial position. [0015] The elements shown in the figures are numbered as follows:
1. Household appliance
2. Switch
3. Indicator
4. Marker
5. LED
[0016] The household appliance (1) comprises a switch (2) providing the user to select one of the operating programs and an indicator (3) that reminds the user of the last selected program,
• that becomes active when the program is selected,
• that becomes passive when the position of the switch (2) is changed while the program operates,
• that becomes active again when the switch (2) is again aligned with the selected program (Figure 1).
[0017] A knob can be used as the switch (2) the position of which can be changed by rotating or pressing on. Transition can be made between the operational programs entered in the household appliance (1) upon changing the position of the switch (2) by the user. Moreover, the household appliance (1) comprises a button on the switch (2) or separate from the switch (2), that starts the operation of the household appliance (1) according to the selected program by means of the switch (2).
[0018] The user selects the program to be operated by adjusting the position of the switch
(2). When the switch (2) is aligned with the selected program, the user runs the program by means of the button and the indicator (3) becomes active. In this phase, the household appliance (1) starts operating according to the selected program. After the household appliance (1) starts operating according to the selected program, if the initial position of the switch (2) is changed, for example, by a child, the indicator (3) in the active position changes to the passive position. In this position, the user, going to the household appliance (1) again, knows that there is a change in the position of the switch (2) since the indicator (3) is not active. When the user wants to know which program is initially selected and running accordingly or which program has completed operating, changes the position of the switch (2) again. When the position of the switch (2) changed by the user is aligned to the initial position, the indicator (3) becomes active. Thus the user is saved from making a mistake as a result of the change in position of the switch (2) and can easily apprehend which program was selected initially.
[0019] In another embodiment of the present invention, the household appliance (1) comprises a switch (2) that changes position by rotating, having more than one indicator (3) arranged around at certain angles. Each indicator (3) corresponds to a different program. The switch (2) comprises a marker (4) arranged thereon and specifying the position thereof. The marker (4) provides the switch (2) to be aligned with the indicator (3).
[0020] In this embodiment of the present invention, the indicator (3) also becomes active when the programming process is completed (Figure X). In this position, the marker (4) on the switch (2) is aligned with the indicator (3) signifying the program to be selected. If the switch (2) changes position due to any reason while the program runs, all the indicators (3) around the switch (2) become passive (Figure 3). In this position, the user understands that the position of the switch (2) is changed. When the position of the switch (2) changes again while the program runs or when the program is over, the indicator (3) becomes active again as the switch (2) is aligned with the initial adjusted position (Figure 4). Consequently, the user can identify which program was selected initially by the user.
[0021] In another embodiment of the present invention, the household appliance (1) comprises one or more light sources - preferably LED- that illuminate the indicators (3).
[0022] In this embodiment, the indicator (3) that corresponds to the marker (4) of the switch
(2) and symbolizing the selected program is illuminated by turning on the light source. After the selected program starts running, the light source that illuminates the indicator
(3) symbolizing the selected program is turned off if any change is made in the position of the switch (2) during running of the program. If the last program selected by the user is desired to be known while the program operates or afterwards, the position of the switch (2) is changed again. When the position of the switch (2) aligns
with the initially selected indicator (3), the light source of the indicator (3) belonging to the initially selected program is turned on again and thus the user can know which program was last selected.
[0023] In another embodiment of the present invention, the household appliance (1) comprises a display (5) preferably having LCD features wherein the programs for operating the appliance (1), the parameters and the values pertaining to the said parameters are displayed. In this embodiment of the present invention, if the position of the switch (2) is changed while the program runs, the user is warned by signs such as text, symbol etc. on the display (5) about the position change of the switch (2).
[0024] In the present invention, the household appliance (1) can be washer/dryer, a dishwasher, a cooking device or a refrigerator.
[0025] By means of the present invention, the user can know which program was last selected.
