Description
Title: Massage device and massage assembly
The present invention relates to a massage device and assembly for massaging a body part.
Massage devices comprising a roller device or a ball-shaped element are well known in the art. By rolling the roller device over the body part underlying muscles are massaged. Another well-known massage device is a vibrator device for massaging a body part by- applying a vibration to the body part to be treated.
In US 2005/0187498 Al a vibrating roller massage device is disclosed. The roller massage device comprises a vibrator unit for applying a vibration to a roller ball. The roller ball is used on the tissue to be treated, thereby providing a massage by both pressure and vibration.
The above-mentioned vibrating roller massage device is a handheld device comprising a vibrator unit. Therefore, the vibrating roller massage device has a limited application. For example, larger body parts require a relatively long time to be massaged. Further, the hand-held device may require an assisting person to massage certain body parts .
A known fitness machine put on the market, inter alia, under the name of Power Plate®, by Power Plate International is in the form of a vibrating plate placed on a frame positioned low down, close to the ground, in the case of which a user can go and stand on the vibrating plate, or can assume other positions, during training. The vibrating plate in this case generates vibrations, which are mechanically transmitted as energy to the user's body. The mechanical stimulus generated as a result produces a so-called stretch reflex in the muscles of the body, which stretch reflex occurs a certain number of times per second depending on the set frequency of the vibrating plate. The result of this is that the muscles are continuously tensed very hard. It has been found that the use of such a vibrating plate produces a great effect on the muscle strength and the bone strength. Beneficial effects of vibrating stimulation of the body are described in, inter alia, Verschueren S, et al . , "Effect of 6-Month Whole Body Vibration Training on Hip Density, Muscle Strength, and Postural
Control in Postmenopausal Women: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study", Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Vol. 19, No. 3, pp. 352-359, 2004, and Delecluse C, et al., "Strength increase after whole-body vibration compared with resistance training", Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise Vol. 35, No. 6, pp 1033-1041, 2004.
The above-mentioned fitness machine is however not intended and configured for vibration massage, but for vibration exercising.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a tool for using the above-mentioned fitness machine as both a fitness machine and a massage device.
The above object is achieved in a massage device according to claim 1 and a massage assembly according to claim 7.
The massage device according to present invention comprises a massage roller element for massaging the body part. The roller element may be a ball-shaped element, a cylindrically shaped element or any other suitably shaped element. The roller element may freely rotate, when a body part is moved over the roller element. A rotation friction may be selected such that a desired massage pressure is required for rotating the roller element. In an embodiment the rotation friction may be user selectable. The massage device may as well comprise a number of roller elements. For example, a number of ball-shaped elements may be arranged in a line or an array.
The massage device according to the present invention further comprises a support frame comprising a support member for positioning the massage device on a surface. The support member enables the massage device to be placed on a surface such as a surface of the above-mentioned fitness machine, which surface is configured to vibrate. Thus, the vibrations generated by the fitness machine are transferred to the massage device, thereby providing a vibrating massage device that is very easy to use by a single user, without requiring a second person for handling the massage device.
The support frame of the massage device according to the present invention further comprises at least one spacing member coupled to the support member for rotatably supporting the massage roller element at a distance from the support member. The spacing member couples the massage roller element and the support member such that the roller element may freely rotate. It is noted that in a particular embodiment, the spacing member and the support member may be constructed as a single element.
In an embodiment, the massage roller element is provided with a flexibly deformable outer layer for applying a suitable pressure to the body part. The flexibly deformable outer layer may be made of a foam, or the like. In an embodiment the support member comprises a base plate member configured to be positioned on a vibrating surface. The base plate provides a plate-shaped surface to be positioned on the vibrating plate of the fitness machine.
The base plate member may comprise a base plate contact surface configured to be in contact with the vibrating surface, the base plate member further comprising an anti-slip means arranged on the base plate contact surface. The anti-slip means are supplied to prevent the massage device from moving during use due to the vibrations and/or the pressure applied by the user. The anti-slip means may comprise a rubber element, like a rubber layer on the base plate contact surface.
In an embodiment the support member comprises a coupling means for rigidly coupling the support frame to the surface. For example, the coupling means may comprise a screw-like element, a Velcro coupling means or a clip or any other kind of fastener.
The massage device and the massage assembly according to the present invention may be used for a wide variety of applications such as warming-up e.g. before exercising, cooling-down e.g. after exercising, stimulating a blood-flow through the massaged body part, skin strengthening, making muscles and/or tendons supple, and the like treatments. Therefore, massaging a body part and/or massaging a body part is to be understood as including, but not limited to, the above-mentioned applications.
The claims and advantages of the present invention will be more readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description and considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference symbols designate like parts.
Fig. IA shows a perspective view of an embodiment of a massage device according to the present invention;
Fig. IB shows a cross-sectional view of the embodiment of Fig. IA along line B-B; and
Fig. 2 shows an embodiment of a massage assembly according to the present invention.
In Fig. IA, a massage device 1 is shown. The massage device 1 comprises a support member 2, a spacing member 3 and a massage roller element 4. In Fig. IB it is illustrated that the massage roller element 4 may comprise a flexibly deformable outer layer 12 around a center roller element 13. The center roller element 13 is rotatably supported by the spacing member 3. The support member 2 is provided with an anti-slip means 14, for example a rubber layer.
In Fig. 2 a fitness machine 5 is shown. The fitness machine 5 comprises a vibrator plate 6 on a vibrator unit base 7. The fitness machine 5 further comprises a standing support element 8 comprising a handgrip 9 for providing a support for a user standing on the vibrator plate 6. The fitness machine 5 may comprise vibration absorbing feet 10 for standing on a floor 11, or the like.
In Fig. 2 the massage device 1 is positioned on the vibrator plate 6 of the fitness machine 5. In use a user may position the massage device 1 on the vibrator plate 6 in any suitable orientation such that the user may massage comfortably the body part the user desires to be massaged.
Using a control system of the fitness machine 5 the amplitude and/or the frequency of the vibrations may be controllable. Thus, the vibration massage may be controlled by controlling the fitness machine 5.
The pressure applied by the massage roller element 4 may be controlled by selecting a suitable outer layer 12. A density, and the like, of the outer layer 12 may be selected such that a suitable massage pressure is applied to the body part and/or such that the user is comfortable during the massage. Further, in order to control the massage strength, the rotation friction of the massage roller element 4 may be controlled. The more rotation friction, the more pressure is required for rotating the roller element 4, thereby a harder massage is obtained.
The anti-slip means 14 are selected preferably such that the massage device 1 does not slide over the surface of the vibrator plate 6. As mentioned above, the anti-slip means 14 may be a rubber layer, as illustrated, provided that rubber provides a suitable friction on the surface of the vibrator plate 6. The anti-slip means may comprise coupling means for coupling the massage device 1 to the surface of the vibrator plate 6. For example, recesses may be provided in the vibrator plate 6 and the massage device 1 may
comprise protrusion to be positioned in said recesses for preventing that the massage device 1 may slide over the surface of the vibrator plate 6. Such recesses may as well be employed for coupling any other kind of accessory to the fitness machine 5. For example, a gripping means, such as a handle, may be coupled in order to allow a user to perform push-ups, while gripping the handle for stability as the vibrator plate 6 vibrates. In an embodiment, the massage device 1 comprises means for blocking a rotational motion of the massage roller element 4 such that the massage device 1 may function as such a gripping means.
The massage roller element 4 is illustrated as a cylindrical roller, but may as well be a number of cylindrical rollers, a spherically shaped element or number of spherically shaped elements. Also other suitable shapes may be employed. The support member 2 is illustrated as a plate. However, the support member 2 may as well be any other kind of suitably supporting element.
As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein; however, it is to be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention, which can be embodied in various forms. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention in virtually any appropriately detailed structure. Further, the terms and phrases used herein are not intended to be limiting; but rather, to provide an understandable description of the invention.
The terms "a" or "an", as used herein, are defined as one or more than one. The term number, as used herein, is defined as two or more than two. The term another, as used herein, is defined as at least a second or more. The terms including and/or having, as used herein, are defined as comprising (i.e., open language). The term coupled, as used herein, is defined as connected, although not necessarily directly, and not necessarily mechanically.
