Definitions

  • This invention relates generally to cartons and, more specifically, to cartons that include a detachable portion.
  • Cartons that encase multiple articles such as soft drink cans or bottles are useful to enable consumers to transport and store articles.
  • the cartons generally include one or more dispensers such that a consumer can access the articles for consumption.
  • Promotional items such as gift cards, compact discs in sleeves, artwork, coupons, vouchers, booklets, and other items are sometimes attached to or included within the cartons.
  • the promotional items are integral to the substrate that forms the carton and must be cut or torn from the carton.
  • the features of the promotional items such as materials, textures, graphics, sizes and the like, are limited by the available manufacturing processes. In either case, the promotional items are relatively difficult to detach from the carton.
  • the promotional items are separate from the carton and are enclosed within the carton. In these applications, the promotional items are relatively easily separated from the carton but can be difficult to access while articles are present in the carton. The articles that are disposed in the carton
  • D-20712-1 obstruct access to the promotional items. Further, the promotional items are not visible and the user may not be aware that a promotional item is in the carton.
  • the promotional items are separate from the carton and are detachably secured to the outside surface of the carton.
  • the promotional items may be undesirably removed or damaged before the carton reaches the end user.
  • the promotional items can be damaged as cartons are stacked on top of one another.
  • the various embodiments of the present invention overcome the shortcomings of the prior art by providing a carton that includes a detachable portion that provides an opening through which articles are dispensed.
  • the detachable portion includes a window.
  • An item is detachably secured to the inside surface of the detachable portion or is otherwise positioned so as to be in registry with the window. Thereby, the presence of the item is made evident through the window of the carton and the item can be accessed as the detachable portion is separated from the carton.
  • the present invention can be embodied as a package that includes the carton, a portion of which is at least partially detachable so as to define a dispenser, and a window formed in the detachable portion of the carton.
  • the carton may be completely enclosed, having a top wall, a bottom wall, a pair of side walls, and a pair of end walls, each being hingedly connected to at least one other wall.
  • the carton may provide a partial enclosure, having fewer than six walls, or at least one partial wall.
  • D-20712-1 An item that is removable or at least partially detachable is directly or indirectly secured against the inside surface of the detachable portion of the carton so as to be in registry with the window.
  • the item is directly secured to an attachment portion by adhesive, staples, magnets, clips, snaps, or other means of securing.

Description

CARTON DISPENSER WITH PROMOTIONAL INSERT WINDOW
CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
This application claims priority to U.S. Application No. 60/864,332, filed November 3, 2006, the entirety of which is herein incorporated by reference.
TECHNICAL FIELD
This invention relates generally to cartons and, more specifically, to cartons that include a detachable portion.
DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART
Cartons that encase multiple articles such as soft drink cans or bottles are useful to enable consumers to transport and store articles. The cartons generally include one or more dispensers such that a consumer can access the articles for consumption.
Promotional items such as gift cards, compact discs in sleeves, artwork, coupons, vouchers, booklets, and other items are sometimes attached to or included within the cartons.
In certain applications, the promotional items are integral to the substrate that forms the carton and must be cut or torn from the carton. In these applications, the features of the promotional items, such as materials, textures, graphics, sizes and the like, are limited by the available manufacturing processes. In either case, the promotional items are relatively difficult to detach from the carton. In other applications, the promotional items are separate from the carton and are enclosed within the carton. In these applications, the promotional items are relatively easily separated from the carton but can be difficult to access while articles are present in the carton. The articles that are disposed in the carton
D-20712-1 obstruct access to the promotional items. Further, the promotional items are not visible and the user may not be aware that a promotional item is in the carton.
In still other applications, the promotional items are separate from the carton and are detachably secured to the outside surface of the carton. In these applications, the promotional items but may be undesirably removed or damaged before the carton reaches the end user. For example, the promotional items can be damaged as cartons are stacked on top of one another.
Therefore, a heretofore unaddressed need exists in the industry to address the aforementioned deficiencies and inadequacies. What is needed is a carton that facilitates access to and visibility of a promotional item within the carton.
SUMMARY
The various embodiments of the present invention overcome the shortcomings of the prior art by providing a carton that includes a detachable portion that provides an opening through which articles are dispensed. The detachable portion includes a window. An item is detachably secured to the inside surface of the detachable portion or is otherwise positioned so as to be in registry with the window. Thereby, the presence of the item is made evident through the window of the carton and the item can be accessed as the detachable portion is separated from the carton.
Generally described, the present invention can be embodied as a package that includes the carton, a portion of which is at least partially detachable so as to define a dispenser, and a window formed in the detachable portion of the carton. The carton may be completely enclosed, having a top wall, a bottom wall, a pair of side walls, and a pair of end walls, each being hingedly connected to at least one other wall. Alternatively, the carton may provide a partial enclosure, having fewer than six walls, or at least one partial wall.
D-20712-1 An item that is removable or at least partially detachable is directly or indirectly secured against the inside surface of the detachable portion of the carton so as to be in registry with the window. In certain embodiments, the item is directly secured to an attachment portion by adhesive, staples, magnets, clips, snaps, or other means of securing. Detachment of the detachable portion defines the dispenser that provides access to the item for removal from the carton.
The package contains at least one article, and possibly an array of articles arranged in rows and columns, the articles being enclosed by the carton. When the package has been opened by way of detachment of the detachable portion, an opening is created through which articles can be dispensed.
In certain embodiments of the invention, the package also includes a sleeve, wherein the item is detachably secured against the inside surface of the detachable portion by being removably enclosed in the sleeve, which is substantially fixedly secured to the inside surface of the detachable portion. In this context, the phrase fixedly secured is intended to indicate that the sleeve securely maintains the position of the item relative to the window, although the item can be removed from the sleeve with or without detaching the sleeve from the detachable portion. According to one aspect of the invention, the detachable portion of the carton is defined by a severance line. The severance line extends at least partially across at least one of the walls of the carton. In certain embodiments, the window is spaced apart from the severance line, although it is contemplated that at least one edge of the window can be coincident with the severance line that defines the detachable portion.
The window formed in the detachable portion is sized and positioned to at least partially reveal the item that is in registry with the window by direct attachment or by indirect attachment by means of a sleeve. The window is at least partially obstructed by the sleeve as it encloses and positions the item in registry with the window.
D-20712-1 The carton is formed from a blank, which may be unitary or may include several pieces of a suitable sheet material, such as but not limited to paperboard or plastic. The blank includes a plurality of panels that are hingedly connected to one another so as to be erectable to form the carton. The detachable portion of the carton is formed from at least part of at least one of the plurality of panels. In other words, the detachable portion may extend at least partially across one or more of the panels. The window formed in the detachable portion may similarly extend onto one or more panels, although positioning the item is somewhat easier when the window is formed in a single surface of the carton.
The foregoing has broadly outlined some of the aspects and features of the present invention, which should be construed to be merely illustrative of various potential applications of the invention. Other beneficial results can be obtained by applying the disclosed information in a different manner or by combining various aspects of the disclosed embodiments. Accordingly, other aspects and a more comprehensive understanding of the invention may be obtained by referring to the detailed description of the exemplary embodiments taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in addition to the scope of the invention defined by the claims.

D-20712-1 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein. It must be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention that may be embodied in various and alternative forms, and combinations thereof. As used herein, the word "exemplary" is used expansively to refer to embodiments that serve as illustrations, specimens, models, or patterns. The figures are not necessarily to scale and some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. In other instances, well-known components, systems, materials, or methods have not been described in detail in order to avoid obscuring the present invention. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention. Referring now to the drawings, wherein like numerals indicate like elements throughout the several views, the drawings illustrate certain of the various aspects of an exemplary embodiment of a package 10 that includes a carton 200 and a reinforcing, opening-facilitating, promotional or any other auxiliary item 180 such as a panel, card, picture, booklet or the like. The item 180 typically is intended to serve as a promotional or complementary item such as a coupon, voucher, ticket, refrigerator magnet, toy (such as a sticker), magnifying glass, merchandising catalog, bottle opener, study aid or the like. In the embodiments detailed herein, the term carton refers, for the non-limiting purpose of illustrating the various features of the invention, to a container for enclosing, carrying, and dispensing articles, such as beverage cans or bottles. However, it is contemplated that the teachings of the invention can be applied to any container that includes a detachable portion.
Generally described, the exemplary carton includes a tubular structure that is defined by a top wall, first and second side walls, and a bottom wall and
D-20712-1 includes end closure structures that define end walls at each of the open ends of the tubular structure.
Referring to the exemplary embodiment illustrated in FIGs. 1 and 2, a carton 200 is formed from a blank 100, which is preferably a single sheet of suitable substrate. It is to be understood that, as used herein, the term "suitable substrate" includes all manner of foldable sheet material such as paperboard, corrugated board, cardboard, plastic, combinations thereof, and the like. In the exemplary embodiment, a unitary blank 100 is used to form the carton 200, although it should be recognized that two or more blanks may be employed to form the carton 200. The blank 100 is designed such that the carton 200 is dimensioned for packaging an exemplary arrangement of exemplary articles. It is envisaged that the blank 100 can be alternatively dimensioned to form a carton for packaging various other articles and/or different arrangements of articles.
As used herein, the term "fold line" refers to all manner of lines that facilitate folding the blank or otherwise that indicate optimal folding locations for the blank. A fold line is typically a scored line, an embossed line, or a debossed line.
As used herein, the terms "tear line" and "severance line" refer to all manner of lines that facilitate separating portions of the blank from one another or that indicate optimal separation locations. Severance lines may be frangible or otherwise weakened lines, cut lines, or slits.
It should be understood that tear lines, severance lines, and fold lines can each include elements that are formed in the substrate of the blank including perforations, a line of perforations, a line of short slits, a line of half-cuts, a single half-cut, a cut line, an interrupted cut line, slits, scores, any combination thereof, and the like. The elements can be dimensioned and arranged to provide the desired functionality.
The blank 100 includes a series of primary panels which define the walls of a tubular structure of the carton 200. The primary panels are aligned along a longitudinal axis of the blank 100 and are hingedly connected one to the next
D-20712-1 along fold lines that extend transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis. Specifically, the blank 100 includes a first side panel 110, a top panel 112, a second side panel 114, and a bottom panel 116. The first side panel 110 is hingedly connected to the top panel 112 along fold line 120, the top panel 112 is hingedly connected to the second side panel 114 along fold line 122, and the second side panel 114 is hingedly connected to the bottom panel 116 along fold line 124. The blank 100 further includes an edge flap 118 that facilitates securing the endmost primary panels to one another, as described in further detail below. In the exemplary embodiment, the edge flap 118 is hingedly connected to the first side panel 110 along a fold line 126.
End flaps are hingedly connected to opposite ends of each primary panel along fold lines that extend parallel to the longitudinal axis. The end flaps can be folded and secured to form end closure structures, as described in further detail below. The blank 100 is substantially symmetric such that the end flaps that are hingedly connected to the opposite ends of each primary panel are substantially similar. Accordingly, the end closure structures of the carton 200 are substantially identical and like references have been used with a suffix "a" or "b" affixed to distinguish one end of the carton 200 from the other. Thus, the description of an element or group of elements having a suffix "a" is generally suitable for a like-numbered element or group of elements having a suffix "b". In certain instances, for clarity, only one of the like elements will be described herein unless a description of the other or both of the like elements is useful for understanding.
First side end flap 130a is hingedly connected to first side panel 110 along fold line 140a, top end flap 132a is hingedly connected to top panel 112 along fold line 142a, second side end flap 134a is hingedly connected to second side panel 114 along fold line 144a, and bottom end flap 136a is hingedly connected to bottom panel 116 along fold line 146a.
The blank 100 includes a severance line 150 that defines a detachable portion 152. The detachable portion 152 is dimensioned and positioned such
D-20712-1 that, as the blank 100 is erected to form the carton 200, the detachable portion 152 can be at least partially separated from the carton 200 to provide an opening O in the carton 200 through which articles A can be dispensed. The exemplary detachable portion 152 is defined by an edge of the blank 100 and includes at least a portion of end flaps 130b, 132b, 134b and at least a portion of panels 110, 112, 114. Generally described, the detachable portion can include at least a portion of one or more of the panels and end flaps of the blank 100.
The severance line 150 includes multiple severance line segments that extend across the panels 110, 112, 114 and end flaps 130b, 134b. Severance line segments 150a, 150b extend across the first and second end flaps 130b, 134b from the distal edges of the first and second end flaps 130b, 134b to the fold lines 140b, 144b, respectively. The severance line segments 150c, 15Od extend across the first and second side panels 110, 114 from the fold lines 140b, 144b to the fold lines 120, 122, respectively. In the exemplary embodiment, the severance line segments 150c, 15Od each define a right angle as they extend from the fold lines 140b, 144b toward the fold lines 140a, 144a and then toward the fold lines 120, 122. It is contemplated however, that the severance line segments 150c, 15Od could define any number of paths as they extend between the fold lines 140a, 144b, and the fold lines 120, 122, including an arc and a substantially straight and direct path. A severance line segment 15Oe extends across the top panel 112 between the fold lines 120, 122. Together, the severance line segments 150a, 150b, 150c, 15Od, 15Oe define the substantially continuous severance line 150. The exemplary severance line 150 and detachable portion 152 are symmetrical, although symmetry is not requisite for implementation of the systems or methods of the invention.
It should be understood that the curvature or path of the severance line 150 is a design decision that can be determined to facilitate folding and securing the blank to form the carton, to provide aesthetic features to the detachable portion 152 or opening O, and/or to provide functionality to the opening O. For example, the curvature of the severance line can be determined in part to optimally retain articles in the carton and to dispense articles from the carton. As
D-20712-1 8 another example, the path of the severance line can be established to facilitate the application of adhesive to the end flaps and panels of the carton.
The blank 100 optionally includes a tear initiation feature 160 to facilitate separation of the detachable portion 152 along the severance line 150. In the exemplary embodiment, the tear initiation feature 160 is a tab that is at least partially defined by a curved or arched portion of the top panel segment 15Oe of the severance line 150 and is additionally defined by a fold line 162. It is contemplated that the tear initiation feature 160 can be defined anywhere along the severance line 150 and can include alternative means such as apertures, extensively weakened segments, slits, combinations thereof, and the like.
The detachable portion 152 of the blank 100 further includes an aperture or window 170. The window 170 is dimensioned and positioned to correspond to the position and dimensions of an item 180 that is inside the carton 200 but is intended to be visible from outside the carton 200. In the exemplary embodiment, for example, the item 180 is detachably secured to the inside surface of the detachable portion 152 of the blank 100. At least a portion of the item 180 is visible through the window 170 as the item 180 is in flat face contact with and secured to an attachment portion P of the detachable portion 152 that is adjacent to the window 170. In variations of the exemplary embodiment, the detachable portion 152 can include a plurality of windows that each displays at least a portion of an item. Further, a plurality of items can be secured to the inside surface of the detachable portion and each of the items can be displayed by one or more windows.
In the exemplary embodiment, the window 170 is formed in the top panel 112 of the blank 100. It should be understood that the window 170 can be formed in one or more of the panels and end flaps, or portions thereof, that define the detachable portion 152 of the blank 100 such that the window 170 is disposed in one or more walls of the carton 200.
The item 180 can completely or partially eclipse the window 170. The size and shape of the window 170 is a design decision that is at least partially
D-20712-1 dependent on the size and shape of the item 180. It should be noted that, in the exemplary embodiment, the shape of the window 170 and the shape of the item 180 are substantially the same. However, the size of the item 180 is slightly larger than the size of the window 170 such that, as the item 180 is disposed in registry with the window 170, the periphery of the item 180 is secured in flat face contact with the attachment portion P of the inside surface of the detachable portion 152, which is adjacent to the periphery of the window 170. In alternative embodiments, the shape of the item 180 and the shape of the window 170 are different, for example, such that the window 170 exposes only a selected portion of the item 180.
The blank 100 further comprises a suitable known or yet to be developed handle H to allow a user to carry the carton 200. The exemplary handle H includes a hand-receiving aperture that may be covered by a cushioning flap that is at least partially removable. Erecting the carton 200 from the blank 100 may be accomplished with the folding operations as described herein. The operations can be performed by hand, by automatic erecting machinery or by any combination of the two. The method of performing the erecting process is not limited to the exemplary method described herein. Particularly, the order of the steps can be altered according to manufacturing requirements, steps may be added or omitted, and the means for securing components to one another may vary. Certain of the surfaces of sheet material of the blank 100 can be secured together by any suitable means for securing including, but not limited to, tape, staples, interlocking folds, VELCRO®, glue or other adhesives, combinations thereof, and the like. The blank 100 can be folded and secured to form a collapsed tubular structure by folding the edge flap 118 along the fold line 126 such that the inside surface of the edge flap 118 is in flat face contact with the inside surface of the first side panel 110, applying glue or other adhesive to the outside surface of the edge flap 118, and folding the blank 100 along the fold line 122 such that the
D-20712-1 10 inside surface of the bottom panel 116 is in flat face contact with, and thereby secured to, the outside surface of the edge flap 118.
The tubular structure can thereafter be erected from the collapsed tubular structure such that the primary panels 110, 112, 114, 116 form the walls of the tubular structure. When arranged as a partially erected tubular structure, the carton includes open ends through which articles can be loaded. It should be understood that the end flaps can be folded outwardly or otherwise so as not to obstruct articles as they are loaded through one or both of the open ends of the tubular structure. The end closure structures of the carton 200 are formed by folding the end flaps as described herein. Top and bottom end flaps 132a, 136a are folded inwardly toward the open end of the tubular structure along fold lines 142a, 146a so as to be substantially coplanar with one another. First and second side end flaps 130a, 134a are folded inwardly toward to the open end of the tubular structure along fold lines 140a, 144a to be substantially coplanar with one another. The first and second side end flaps 130a, 134a overlap the top and bottom end flaps 132a, 136a and overlap one another. Glue or other adhesive is applied to the overlapping portions of the end flaps to secure the end flaps together so as to form the end closure structure. Thereby, the end closure structures of the carton 200 are formed and the carton 200 is fully erected. The primary panels that define the tubular structure portion and the end closure structures define the walls of the carton 200. The top panel 112 defines a top wall 212, the side panels 110, 114 define side walls 210, 214, the bottom panel 116 defines a bottom wall 216, and the end closure structures define end walls 218, 220, respectively.
The carton illustrated in the drawings is adapted to hold a group of similarly dimensioned, possibly cylindrical articles A (such as cans or bottles), in a matrix arrangement of rows and columns. However, the principles of the invention would be applicable in a container enclosing a single article that can be dispensed through an opening, as well as to a container enclosing a powder or
D-20712-1 1 1 many small articles. The exemplary articles are disposed on their sides in a side- by-side parallel fashion with the ends of the articles disposed adjacent to the side walls 210, 214 of the carton. It should be noted that the item 180 is viewable through the window 170 in the top wall 212 of the carton 200. Referring to FIGs. 2 and 3, the segments 150a, 150b of the severance line 150 are aligned to form a substantially continuous severance line along the end wall 220 such that the severance line 150 is substantially endless. The detachable portion 152 of the erected carton 200 is positioned at a corner of the carton 200 and includes a portion of the top wall 212, first and second side walls 210, 214, and the end wall 220. It should be understood that the detachable portion 152 can include at least a portion of any one or more walls of the carton 200. For example, in a variation of the exemplary embodiment, the detachable portion 200 can be defined from the top wall 212 and one of the side walls 210. As mentioned above, the window 170 can be disposed in the detachable portion 152 and in at least a portion of one or more of the walls.
Referring to FIGs. 2 and 3, the detachable portion 152 can be at least partially separated from the carton 200 along the severance line 150. According to the following exemplary and non-limiting method, pressure is applied to the tab 160 to break the portion of the severance line segment 15Oe that defines the tab 160 such that the tab 160 can be folded along the fold line 162. An edge of the item 180 may be positioned in registry with the fold line 162 so that such an edge of the item 180 may be utilized as a folding guide to facilitate the inward folding of the tab 160. Another edge or edges of the item 180 may be positioned in registry with the straight portion or portions of the top panel segment 15Oe of the severance line 150 so that such an edge or edges may be utilized as a cutting assist to facilitate breaking of the segment 15Oe. In any event, it is desirable to prevent obstruction of the operation of the tab 160 by any edge or portion of the item 180. After the tab 160 is folded inwardly, the edge that is defined by the fold line 162 is engaged to continue to break the severance line 150 so as to separate the detachable portion 152 from the carton 200. As shown in FIG. 3, the detachable portion 152 is completely detached along the severance line 150.
D-20712-1 1 2 In a variation of the exemplary embodiment, the severance line segments 150a, 150b of the severance line 150 can be substituted for fold lines such that the detachable portion 152 remains hingedly connected to the end wall 220.
The detachable portion 152 can be at least partially removed to facilitate access to the item 180. The item 180 is detachably secured to the inside surface of the detachable portion 152 by any means for securing including, but not limited to, tape, staples, interlocking folds, VELCRO®, glue or other adhesives, combinations thereof, and the like. As the inside surface of the detachable portion 152 is exposed, the item 180 can be engaged and separated from the detachable portion 152. Thereafter, in an embodiment where the detachable portion 152 remains hingedly connected to the carton 200, the detachable portion 152 can be repositioned over the opening O such that the window 170 facilitates viewing the articles A in the carton 200. In the exemplary embodiment, the detachable portion 152 is at least partially removed to provide the opening O through which articles A can be dispensed. It should be understood that the scope of the invention can include any known or yet to be developed detachable portion that provides an article dispenser for a carton.
FIG. 4 illustrates an alternative embodiment, wherein rather than directly securing the item 180 to the detachable portion 152, a sleeve 190 is secured in the same manner as described with respect to the item 180. The sleeve 190 encloses the item 180 and holds the item 180 in place within the carton 200. The surface of the sleeve 190 that is visible through the window 170 may include graphics describing the item 180, which may for example, be a gift card, food item, baseball card, or a coin. Alternatively, the sleeve 190 may be transparent or semi-transparent. In any event, the sleeve190 is directly and fixedly secured to the inside surface of the detachable portion 152 thereby fixing the position of the item 180, potentially displaying the item 180, and blocking the ingress of dust, moisture, or other matter from entering the carton 200. After the item 180 has been removed from a clear sleeve, the user can see the articles within through the sleeve, or the sleeve can be removed. Thus, when a sleeve 190 is used, the item 180 may be smaller than the window 170.
D-20712-1 13 The present invention has been illustrated in relation to a particular embodiment which is intended in all respects to be illustrative rather than restrictive. Those skilled in the art will recognize that the present invention is capable of many modifications and variations without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, as used herein, directional references such as "top", "base", "bottom", "end", "side", "inner", "outer", "upper", "middle", "lower", "front" and "rear" do not limit the respective walls of the carton to such orientation, but merely serve to distinguish these walls from one another. Any reference to hinged connection should not be construed as necessarily referring to a junction including a single hinge only; indeed, it is envisaged that hinged connection can be formed from one or more potentially disparate means for hingedly connecting materials.
The above-described embodiments are merely exemplary illustrations of implementations set forth for a clear understanding of the principles of the invention. Variations, modifications, and combinations may be made to the above-described embodiments without departing from the scope of the claims. All such variations, modifications, and combinations are included herein by the scope of this disclosure and the following claims.
