Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to a miter box (holder or jig) for holding a crown molding in place during the sawing process in producing miter joints therein.
  • crown moldings Certain decorative wood products, such as crown moldings, are designed to be fitted to corners of various sizes. Crown moldings produced in long pieces must be cut to desired lengths depending on ceiling heights and how much of the corners are desired to be decorated. In cutting the manufactured crown moldings, two basic angles must be cut so that one end of the crown molding will conform to the ceiling, and the other end thereof will conform to the adjoining wall. The so-cut crown molding, when placed against a ceiling and an adjoining wall which form a 90° between them, will form the hypotenuse of the triangle.
  • Prior art miter boxes exist for making cuts for crown moldings, such as US Patents 4875399, 4907482 and 6481320.
  • One of the drawbacks associated with these miter boxes is that the molding must be held upside down during cutting and the user does not see the molding as it will be installed in the corner of the ceiling.
  • the present invention seeks to provide an improved miter box (holder or jig, the terms being used interchangeably) for holding a crown molding in place during the sawing process in producing miter joints therein.
  • the crown molding With the present invention, one cuts the crown molding positioned as it will be installed, so there is no need to turn the crown molding upside down as in the prior art. Before cutting, the crown molding is firmly held upwards against a set of angled cushions. Bottom clamps are then firmly pressed against the crown molding. The crown molding can now be cut with a saw positioned through the slots of the miter box.

  • Fig. 1 illustrates a miter box 10 constructed and operative in accordance with a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention.
  • Miter box 10 includes a base 12 from which extend first and second upright abutments 14 and 16 spaced from one another and each formed with miter slots (also called channels) 18.
  • Saw-sliding faces of slots 18 may be arranged at different angles, such as but not limited to, 0°, 22.5° and 45°.
  • Base 12 may be formed with one or more saw-supporting faces 20 angled with respect to the flat surface of the base 12, such as but not limited to, at angles of 22.5° and/or 45°.
  • base 12 may also include one or more chamfered corners 21 that form angles with the straight sides of base 12 of miter box 10, such as but not limited to, at angles of 22.5° and/or 45°.
  • Miter box 10 includes two sets of clamps for clamping workpieces.
  • First clamps 22 are positioned on base 12.
  • clamps 22 are positioned on either side of abutment 14 and are arranged to slide in channels 24 (horizontally) along base 12 towards abutment 16.
  • Second clamps 26 are positioned on abutment 16.
  • clamps 26 are positioned on either side of the portion of abutment 16 that has the slots 18.
  • Clamps 26 are arranged to slide in channels 28 (vertically) along abutment 16 towards base 12.
  • Clamps 22 and 26 are provided with releasable locking levers 30.
  • Levers 30 turn from one position that locks the clamp in its channel to another position that releases the clamp and permits moving (e.g., sliding) the clamp in the channel to any desired position.
  • the clamps of the invention may be made from a range of materials (e.g., plastic, metal), or a combination of materials and adapted to a range or family of clamps.
  • Clamps 22 and 26 are provided with detachable jaw pads 32 (also called cushions).
  • the detachable jaw pads 32 may snap onto straight jaw faces of the clamps by means of resilient tangs 34 that snap over flanges 36 of clamps 22 and 26.
  • the detachable jaw pads 32 may be attached to clamps 22 and 26 in other ways as well, such as with pins that are pushed into holes or with fasteners.
  • the detachable jaw pads 32 are angled with respect to the straight (flat) jaw faces of the clamps, such as but not limited to, at angles of 22.5°, 30°, 45° and/or 60°.
  • detachable jaw pads 32 are angled with respect to the straight jaw faces of the clamps at angles corresponding to the angles of the crown molding.
  • FIG. 3 illustrates a crown molding 40 held against angled faces of the vertical clamps 26, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. It is noted that molding 40 is positioned and held for cutting in the same orientation as the molding is installed, something not found in the prior art.
  • Fig. 4 illustrates that the vertical clamps 26 can be released and moved in tracks 28 so as to clamp against a crown molding 41 of different size than crown molding 40. Horizontal clamps 22 are then simply moved in track 24 to abut and clamp against molding 40 or 41. The molding can then be cut with a miter saw in the miter slots 18.
  • FIG. 5 illustrates the versatility of miter box 10.
  • a workpiece 42 other than a molding may be cut in miter box 10 by removing detachable jaw pads 32 and adjusting the position of clamps 22 and 26 to clamp against the workpiece 42 with their flat faced jaw faces (cushions).
  • An alternative feature of the invention can be seen in Fig. 5. It is noted that in the illustrated embodiment, workpiece 42 is sized such that it abuts against abutments 14 and 16. Thus, as an alternative, detachable jaw pads 32 and clamps 22 and 26 can be removed, and workpiece 42 can be held against abutments 14 and 16, without need for clamps.
  • Miter box 10 can be fixed in place on a table by detachable stoppers 46 that fit in holes 48 in base 12. This feature enables working quickly and easily without attaching miter box 10 to a work surface.
  • FIG. 6 illustrates a miter box 50, constructed and operative in accordance with another embodiment of the present invention.
  • Miter box 50 includes a swivel base 52 rotatable azimuthally, from which extend first and second upright guides 54 and 56 spaced from one another and each formed with miter slots (also called channels) 58.
  • Miter box 50 includes two sets of clamps 60 and 62 on opposite sides of swivel base 52 for clamping a workpiece.
  • Clamps 60 and 62 are arranged to slide (horizontally in the sense of the drawing) in channels 64.
  • Clamps 60 and 62 are provided with releasable locking levers 64.
  • Levers 64 turn from one position that locks the clamp in its channel to another position that releases the clamp and permits moving (e.g., sliding) the clamp in the channel to any desired position.
  • swivel base 52 may be rotated in azimuth to a selected angle and a saw may be used to cut the workpiece with the saw being guided through the miter slots 58.
  • first and second upright guides 54 and 56 may be provided with a vertical track and a clamp that slides therein for clamping down on the workpiece from above. This may help reduce chatter during sawing.
