Abstract
The invention relates to implant coatings comprising terpenoids which are used alone or in combination with other organic or inorganic materials. The terpenoid materials can have a natural, synthetic, or semisynthetic origin. The aim of the invention is to find a novel use for the group of terpenoid substances as a coating material for implants, making use of the physical and antibacterial properties of terpenoids as well as the typical release characteristics. The coating material can contain additional components which influence the mechanical properties of the implant coating and are physically relevant. Metallic, natural, synthetic, and ceramic surfaces can be coated with the terpenoid formulation, irrespective of the roughness, preliminary treatment, or precoating of the surface.
