Description

Description NEWS DELIVERY METHOD
[I] Technical Field
[2] This invention relates to a method for the delivery of flash news to the users of Set
Top Box or television.
[3] Prior art
[4] In the state of the art Japanese Patent application no. JP2002135667, a broadcasting receiver which enables the user to easily watch the desired programs is disclosed. In the above mentioned broadcasting receiver, the videos as well as the accompanying texts are displayed on the video. For example if the image on the screen belongs to a flash news , this text is displayed on the screen. In another embodiment, if there is "news" information as text among the channels, this channel is automatically displayed.
[5] In the method disclosed in the Japanese Patent application no. JP2001292112, the contents of the programs are chosen by identification through IDs and, after they have been compared with the IDs they are displayed on the television screen.
[6] In the Japanese Patent application no. JP2001094520, an information display device is disclosed which transmits information to the information screen in locations such as hotels, airports etc. over teletext and radio signal. The system is based on the fact that these screens receive data from the current television signals rather than establishing a separate data transmission system.
[7] In the Japanese Patent application no. JPl 1316644, 2 audio or 2 video information come simultaneously to a source and, icons related to these are displayed on the screen. On condition that one of the previously identified words (for example "weather") comes from one of the audio sources, the system directs the source to the audio output automatically and activates the relevant icon on the screen. For example when it is broadcasting music, the piano icon is active. However; as soon as the weather forecast starts, the audio output is switched to the forecast and the icon changes.
[8] Brief description of the invention
[9] The purpose of this invention is to realize a method and a device which, according to the preferences of the user, automatically senses a MHEG formatted flash news broadcasted when the user is watching any program and transmits it to the user.
[10] Another purpose of this invention is to realize a method and a device which displays the flash news in the previously determined format when the flash news is broadcasted together with the main broadcasting flow.
[I I] Another purpose of this invention is to display the required flash news with an interface created by the device independently from the interface provided by the broadcaster during the display of news. [12] Detailed description of the invention
[13] The method and the device realized to reach the purpose of this invention are shown in the appended figures.
[14] Figure 1 - The flow diagram of the inventive method
[15] Figure 2 - The block diagram of the receiving device to which the inventive method is applied. [16] The parts illustrated in the Figures are given numbers and the corresponding names of these numbers are given below: [17] 1. Method
[18] 2. receiving device
[19] 3. Tuner
[20] 4. 41. Memory
[21] 5. Processor
[22] 6. Display
[23] 7. Receiver
[24] 8. Digital broadcasting
[25] 9. Remote control
[26] 10. User input
[27] The inventive method (1) includes the following basic steps:
[28] - Device is turned on (101),
[29] - Tuner (3) tunes to the frequency (102),
[30] - User chooses the flash news contents she/he wants to watch by means of the remote control (9) and the menus (103), [31] - The user starts watching the channel (104),
[32] - The receiving device (2) starts/continues collecting MHEG data at the background
(105),
[33] - The MEGH data is controlled whether it has the flash news label or not (106),
[34] - On condition that the MHEG data has the flash news label, it is checked whether the subject of MHEG data is one of the previously determined subject or not (107), [35] - On condition that the subject of MHEG data is one of the previously determined subjects, an indicator or news is displayed on the display (6) in the format and duration the user wants (108),
[36] - The user closes the news or the news ends (109).
[37] In the inventive method (1), the broadcaster labels the suitable data as flash news and broadcasts them in the MHEG format. On the receiver end, the method applied in the receiving device of the user (television or set top box) (2) analyses the "flash news" labeled data among the data received from the broadcast and displays the previously determined subjects to the display (6) in the previously determined format.
[38] In the method (1) the user chooses the flash news subjects she/he wants to receive, from a menu on the display (6). The chosen flash news subjects can be economy, sports, magazine etc. The flash news labeled data is collected by the device (2) as it received from the broadcast and is processed at the background. On condition that the flash news received from the digital broadcast (8) matches with the criteria of the user, it is displayed on the display (6) or, indicates the user in a way, for example with a flashing red point. The flash news can be displayed to the user as a flowing text band below the display (6) or in another format that the user prefers. Furthermore; in all the embodiments of the invention, all of the MHEG data is provided automatically to the user as soon as the subjects are chosen in the time and quantity specified by the user. It is obvious that many indications can be provided to user such as an audible warning or vibration of the remote control.
[39] In both digital teletext and MHEG-5 embodiments, the page setup on the display (6) is provided by the broadcaster. However; in the inventive method (1), the flash news received from the digital broadcast (8) is displayed on the display (6) in the preferred format independently from the broadcaster. This provides flexibility to the user and the manufacturer of the device (2). Though in one embodiment the way the flash news is displayed on the display (6) is dependant on the design provided by the broadcaster, in another embodiment it is displayed in accordance with the design in the receiving device (2) software.
[40] The receiving device (2), to which the inventive method (1) is applied includes tuner
(3), memory (4), processor (5), display (6), receiver (IR receiver) (7) in its most basic state.
[41] The embodiment of this inventive method (1) to the receiving device (2) is as follows:
[42] The digital broadcasting (8) is converted to TS format (Transport Stream) by passing thorough tuner (3). Besides the audio and video data in the TS packets, there is also data labeled as flash news. Receiving, analyzing and processing TS packets is done by processor (5). The memory (4) requirement of the processor (5) is met by the memory (4) of the device (2). Information which should not be lost when the receiving device (2) is switched off is recorded in the permanent memory (41) and read from permanent memory when necessary.
[43] In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the user inputs (10) are done via the remote control (9). The signals sent by this remote control (9) are received by the infrared receiver (7) and transmitted to the processor (5).
[44] It is the duty of the processor (5) to draw and send the relevant screen images to the display (6). For the information to be delivered to the user, on screen menus are used. After the various options related to the choice of flash news subjects are provided to the user through on screen menus and after the user make a choice via the remote control (9), the algorithm run by processor (5) is adjusted according to the choices of the user. [45] For example, on condition that "receive only flash news related to politics" choice is made among the ones provided to the user on the on screen menu, the processor (5) selects the subjects marked as politics among the ones received from the broadcast and displays them to the user. [46] As an another example, on condition that "display the flash news as a flowing text band below the display (6)" choice is made among the ones provided to the user on the on screen menu, the processor prepares the relevant flash news in the flowing band format and displays it on the display (6). [47] Thanks to the above mentioned method (1) the user can reach the flash news without any effort. Hence; the will of the users who want to see the flash news instantly is met. [48] Based on this general concept, it is possible to develop various embodiments of the news delivery method (1) of the invention; the invention is as disclosed in the claims and it can not be limited with the exampled detailed herein.
