Description
DEVICE FOR RECEIVING SIGNALS SUPPLIED BY PERMANENT MAGNETS FOR VEHICLES TRAVELLING ALONG ROADWAYS
The present invention relates to a device for receiving warning and informa- tive signals supplied by permanent magnet pieces for vehicles travelling along roadways. The device comprises a magnetic detector unit, a digital evaluation unit and a display unit. The coded warning and informative signals are supplied by permanent magnet pieces embedded in the road surface in a predetermined pattern. A method is known in which certain information is provided to vehicles passing over permanent magnet pieces located in the road surface in a fixed pattern. Such method is described for example in Hungarian patent application HU 224667. This method can be used for pre-signalling of dangerous road sections. Such danger may be e.g. a level crossing or something similar. However, the aforementioned document comprises teachings relating only to constructing and locating the permanent magnet pieces which are then can be detected by a receiver of a vehicle passing over them, and does not comprise instructions for constructing the receiver.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device which when used together with the aforementioned method is applicable to detect the magnetic pieces of the system reliably, which is able to filter out the electromagnetic effects originating from other sources, and to inform and warn the driver of the vehicle of an impending danger. A further object of the present invention is to provide a sufficiently small device which later can be added to any type of vehicles with little effort.
Accordingly, a device according to the preamble is provided wherein the detector unit is fastened to a part of the vehicle which is magnetically unshielded from below, and is connected to the evaluation unit comprising decoding means and evaluating means for identifying the permanent magnets arranged in a prede- termined pattern and embedded in the road surface. The evaluation unit is adapted to control the display unit in case of identification.
A detailed description of the device according to the invention will be given with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a block scheme of the device according to the invention; Figure 2 shows the architecture of the evaluation unit of Figure 1 ; and Figure 3 shows the flow chart of the operation of the device according to the invention.
In Figure 1 the three functional units of the device according to the invention are shown, which are the followings:
Detector unit 1 is adapted to detect external magnetic and electromagnetic effects during the vehicle's travel. The detector unit 1 may be fastened to different parts of the vehicle, for example the undercarriage, the bumper, etc. Several detector units 1 may be located on one vehicle which are fastened by means of screws, Velcro, etc., so that they can be easily installed or removed. The number of the detector units 1 located on the vehicle is optional. The main point for deter- mining this number is safety. Economic reasons may also be considered. Naturally, the number of detector units 1 depends on the type and structure of the vehicle.
Evaluation unit 2 having one or more inputs (correspondent to the number of detector units 1) is adapted to process the signal sequences received from detec- tor units 1 through a respective channel and to transmit them to a display unit 3. In the exemplary embodiment of Figure 2 evaluation unit 2 receives signals from three detector units 11 , 12 and 13. Preferably, the input signals are decoded and analyzed in respective decoding means D1 , D2 and D3. The output of the decoding means D1 , D2 and D3 are connected to a summing element SUM which gen- erates and transmits a driving, control signal for display unit 3.
Basically, the device according to the invention is adapted to identify the permanent magnet pieces arranged in a predetermined pattern in the road surface, and to control display unit 3 in case of identification. As already mentioned, identification is performed by evaluation unit 2 which then transmits a driving, con- trol signal for display unit 3 as a result of which the driver of the vehicle is informed e.g. about a dangerous road section ahead. The information may be given in the form of an acoustic signal, a light signal, graphical presentation or combination of these.
Display unit 3 is located in the range of perception particularly in the angle of vision of the driver and is adapted to display figures, graphics, warning signals, audio-visual effects on the basis of the information processed by evaluation unit 2. Advantageously it is adapted to simultaneously display more than one of these, for example acoustic signals and figures, or acoustic and light signals. The light signal may be a flashing signal or a light with altering colours. The display unit of the device according to the invention may be a unit comprising a memory, an LCD display and a sound generator or it can be an electronic device available in trade. The latter may be a cellular phone, a hand-held computer or even the vehicle's own on-board display device. In these devices a software comprising the proper code table should be used in order to display the information supplied by evaluation unit 2 correctly. These code tables are known for the person having knowledge of the device or can be bought from the manufacturer.
When the device according to the invention is installed, detector unit 1 is mounted e.g. on the undercarriage of the vehicle and connected to evaluation unit 2 through cables. Advantageously, evaluation unit 2 is located in a place where it can not be seen, for example behind the dashboard, in the engine compartment etc. Evaluation unit 2 is connected to display unit 3 by cables. If display unit 3 is incorporated in the evaluation unit 2 of the device, then they can be located in a place where it is well seen by the driver of the vehicle. If a separate member or external device is used as display device 3, then display unit 3 and evaluation unit 2 may be connected through flexible connection, to this a socket may be provided on the dashboard. In an alternative embodiment radio-frequency transmission, for example Bluetooth type short-range communication system may be used instead of cables.
For power supply a separate battery, accumulator or the vehicle's own battery may be used.
When locating the detector unit 1 it is important to mount it to a part of the vehicle which is unshielded from below, in this manner the changes of the mag- netic field created by the permanent magnet pieces embedded in the road surface can be detected correctly as the vehicle travels above the magnet pieces. At the same time the effect of disturbing, external magnetic, electromagnetic signals can be eliminated if the detector unit 1 is mounted on a part of the vehicle which is
magnetically shielded from above. Advantageously, the detector unit is fastened to the undercarriage or bumper or other similar member of the vehicle in a releasable manner.
In the flow chart of Figure 3 the operation of the device according to the in- vention is shown. When the device is started, it is assumed that the vehicle is travelling along a public road. Detection takes place by means of detector unit or units 1. In a first step it is determined whether magnetic or electromagnetic or other radiofrequency signal has been detected or not. If a signal has been detected, it is determined on the basis of the incoming signal whether a predeter- mined pattern of the fixedly located magnet piece arrangement addressed by the device has been detected by the detector unit 1. In other words, it is determined whether the signal is certainly received from a signal transmitter of the system. If the result of this evaluation is that the electric or electromagnetic signals have been transmitted from the system, the received signal sequence must be identi- fied, decoded. As a result of this a suitable drive signal is generated at the output of the evaluation unit 2 for controlling display unit 3 - which is located in the passenger compartment, near the driver - to display the information relating to road conditions or traffic.
If required, the event, i.e. the decoded warning or message together with a time stamp may be stored automatically in an electronic storage means. In this manner a so called "black box" function is ensured. By this means it can be checked whether the driver has actually been informed about a certain source of danger. Further, tracing of a route for example in case of scheduled buses becomes possible. The advantage of the device according to the invention in addition to the reliable detection is that it is easy to construct and can be installed in any vehicle.
