Abstract
A gemstone laser marking system (1) and method (100) in which a rough or polished diamond (24, 224) or other gemstone is marked with one or more laser pulses (12) which have an ultra-short duration of less than 10 picoseconds. The laser pulses are generated by a pulsed laser (2) which may be a mode lock laser (2). The ultra-short laser pulses (12 are focused on the gemstone surface or bulk using a focusing device (16) to mark the gemstone (24, 224). The relative displacement between the gemstone mount (17) and the path of the laser pulse(s) can be varied in order to mark a pattern or feature (30), which may be for example a data matrix, a bar code, a glyphic text, a photograph, or other digital data and analogue data, on the surface of the polished or rough gemstone.
