Abstract

In a method and apparatus for locating the position of an eye in three dimensions, an emitter projects light illuminating the eye whose location is to be determined. A reflection from the eye travels back and is focused by a lens so to impinge upon a sensor. Using a beam splitter or other arrangement, the light is cast so the field of view of the lens is coincident with the projected light. Given a known relationship between lens and sensor, a unique line is established along which the reflecting eye must lie. Two distinct lines define a unique location in three dimensions for the eye. Also, a single line and other known position data of the eye can be combined. Eye position can be obtained using bright pupil reflections, corneal reflections, or reflections of another type.
