Description

BATH MAT FOR TOYS
FIELD AND BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to anti-slip bath/shower mats, and to bath accessories/toys in general.
Providing entertaining and educational bath-time activities for children is motivated by two reasons: to entice the children to take a bath; and to allow parents to use the interaction during bath time to'convey developmental skills to the children. It is important to emphasize that since a parent must interact with the child at all times during the bath time (in order to ensure that the child is safe), the bath is an ideal environment for the child to develop motor, cognitive, and communication skills with the guidance and encouragement of the parent.
There is a wide array of various bath toys in the prior art designed for the purposes mentioned above. Examples of prior-art bath toys include: toys that float, toys that connect with suction cups to the side walls of the bathtub and/or bathroom wall, and toys that rest on the top surface of the side wall of the bathtub. However, existing bath toys have a limitation in the fact that they cannot be attached to the bottom surface of the bathtub, typically onto a bath mat. The main reason for this limitation is that a suction cup cannot readily create a low-pressure environment (or vacuum) between the suction cup itself and a grooved/depressed rubber or soft-plastic surface (i.e. the top surface of a bath mat).
Prior-art bath and shower mats commonly use suction cups to attach such mats to a surface. Prior-art examples that teach such bath mats include: Pretty, U.S. Patent No. 2,471,008, in which the corners of a rectangular mat are held by four suction cups; Gavlak, U.S. Patent No. 2,081,992; and Capouch, U.S. Design Patent No. D85,859, in which a plurality of suctions cups hold a bathtub mat to the surface of the bathtub.
In addition to the limitations described above, bath toys tend to become scattered around the vicinity of the bathtub when not in use, making the bathroom untidy and full of obstructions, and causing a disturbance to other members of the family while using the bathtub and bathroom facilities. An approach that has been used to solve this problem is a netted bags connected with suction cups to the side wall of the bathtub (or on the bathroom wall above the bathtub), making it easy to insert toys into the bag and store them. Another approach is a rigid plastic container that is used to scoop the toys from the bathtub, and is then reconnected to a plastic base adhered to the bathroom wall using suction cups.
However, these approaches are limited in that when the bags or containers are filled with toys, they become large. This creates an obstruction for someone using the bathtub facilities. Another disadvantage of these solutions is the manner in which the toys are stored. The toys are thrown together into one receptacle, making it difficult to retract a specific toy from the receptacle.
It would be desirable to have anti-slip bath/shower mats, bath accessories/toys in general, that overcome the abovementioned deficiencies of the prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is the purpose of the present invention to improve upon an anti-slip bath mat which may also be used as a base connector for bath toys and accessories. A further purpose of the present invention is to provide an improved anti-slip bath mat which may also store bath toys and accessories when not in use, while attached to the wall of the bathroom, a side wall of the bathtub, or any similar surface.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a bath mat has a plurality of suction cups located on its underside in a similar fashion to a conventional bath mat. Drainage apertures, usually having a larger diameter than the suction cups, are located in the bathmat interspersed among the suction cups. Each drainage aperture has a recess and ring located typically on the underside of the mat. The recess serves to receive and hold a connector that may be further connected to corresponding connectors located on a bath toy and/or an accessory designed to effectively mate with the bath mat. The ring serves to maintain the drainage aperture at a suitable elevation for engaging a connector.
Alternatively or additionally, a connector may be part of an appendage of a bath toy and/or an accessory, thereby serving to effectively mate the toy and/or accessory directly to the bath mat. The sizes and shapes of the drainage apertures and suction cups may be varied and the drainage apertures and suction cups may be positioned, with respect to one another, in a variety of arrangements.
In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the drainage apertures and corresponding connectors are shaped according to the shape of the entire bath mat (i.e. any geometric shape, e.g. circular, oval, square, rectangular, and triangular). The present invention uses a similar method for attaching a mat to a surface as those in the prior art cited above in the background.
