Abstract

The present invention describes a navel cover device of the type comprising a protective structure (2) suitable to constitute the actual shield for the umbilical zone and fitted with at least one couple of first slits (3 and 4) envisaged to house at least one fastening element (5) which creates a lacing around the user's body. The navel cover device is designed to shield the umbilical zone, protecting it from small blows, to maintain the body temperature without exposing a particularly sensitive and delicate zone to sudden temperature changes, and to exercise a gentle therapeutic massage action.

Description

"NAVEL COVER DEVICE".
Technical field
The present invention refers to a navel cover device which permits a very delicate zone of the abdomen to be protected, and results in being a fashion accessory whose aesthetic appearance is trendy, changeable and variable. Background art
As it is known, the navel is the formation of a scar which remains after birth and derives from the orifice crossed by the vascular cord which, in placental mammals, connects the embryo to the mother. The navel, which is situated in the central region of the front wall of the abdomen, is considered the most delicate zone of the entire abdomen as it is the sole point of the abdominal wall which is not covered and protected by muscles and it is connected directly with the spleen and the stomach. In fact, it is known that unexpected pressure in the navel zone can cause serious physical and energy imbalances and a blow may cause serious injury and even death.
In addition to everything illustrated so far, the navel is positioned at the height of the third lumbar vertebra, the sole vertebra parallel to the ground. The imaginary line which cuts it horizontally is called the "axis mundi". It represents centrality, the centre of the individual, of both one's physical vitality and one's spirituality. In Oriental culture, the abdominal area is called Hara. In the places where Taoism and Buddhism are common, Hara is taken into supreme consideration as it is the barycentre on which the physical, emotional, mental and energy forces act. In yoga the Chakra of the solar plexus, or the 'Manipura' , influences the abdominal organs and produces physical and mental powers, including the uncommon capacity to control one' s bodily motions (equilibrium). This chakra influences problems linked to health, energy and physical action, and also to immunity from illness. Furthermore, it is connected directly with the capacity to take care of oneself and contains the energy which allows us to manifest our personality and assimilate experience, in addition to containing force, fullness, wisdom, influence and power. Good Chakra Manipura energy gives one the capacity to feel pleasure, expansiveness, awareness of life, action and willpower.
Good energy is obtained through diverse techniques already in use, all of which are aimed ' at protecting, warming, physically massaging the place where this chakra is located, i.e. the umbilical zone. As mentioned earlier, a widespread fashion of nowadays obliges one to show one's navel, even during the winter period, and thus to expose it to sudden coldness. This can lead to a stiffening of the zone containing what is the human body's point of equilibrium, with a consequent loss of fluidity in the entire body, in addition to influencing and damaging the functionality of the many pressure points of variable importance present in this zone. From a medical point of view, keeping the navel uncovered, above all during the winter period, is very harmful. In proof of the statements above, on 3.1.06 the "Corriere della Sera" newspaper published the following article: "...and just a few days ago, 16-year-old Kayleigh Bradley, from Blackburn, Lancashire, ended up in hospital with a kidney infection. The cause? Too many nights out with her midriff on show ". At present, it is known that there are diverse types of massage in existence aimed at the umbilical zone, all of which must be effected in a very gentle manner, with smooth surfaces (e.g. the palm of the hand), and the curative power of said massages has already been established. A first method is the Chi Nei Tsang method, which is a Chinese system of deep healing which utilises the energy flow of the body's five major systems: vascular, lymphatic, nervous, tendino-muscular and the acupuncture meridians. Through this practice, one is able to increase the energy flow to specific organs by massaging points in the umbilical zone. The Chi Nei Tsang clears energy blocks in the navel in order to then guide the healing light energy to other parts of the body.
A second method is Shiatsu, which is one of the most powerful techniques to help our organism restore a deep equilibrium, an element which is indispensable to maintain health. Equilibrium is a natural condition, but modern-day life models, distancing us from natural rhythms, stimulate the onset of that state of discomfort which is called "psychosomatic imbalance", which is always accompanied by a condition known as "lack of vital force". In the presence of complex energy imbalances, a zonal treatment is effected. The navel zone is massaged (very delicately, as if tying to unwind every kind of tension present) to treat symptoms such as constipation, digestion problems, problems linked to the menstrual cycle, and offers benefits such as revival of sexual vigour and vitality in general. This massage leads to advantages for all the abdominal organs. A third method is finger pressure, which is an ancient massage technique and can also be effected by oneself. Called Jyy Ya, it was born in China approximately six thousand years ago and is at the origin of Shiatsu. This massage is practised by pressing the fingers, or doing a gentle massage with the fingers on the energy points for a few instants (without applying pressure to the navel). In fact, according to Oriental philosophical theory, when we are ill, it happens that the constant energy flow is blocked. When the major energy points are not 'protected', we are more likely to have energy blocks and therefore illnesses.
Additionally, there is crystal therapy, according to the school of Katrina Raphael, which works on 8 chakras, one more than the classic 7 "fundamental" chakras. The chakra of the navel is the centre of the energies which regulate our physical being and its material realisation occurs through the exercising of willpower (if this chakra is not active, it is unlikely that plans can be achieved). It is a very important chakra and the work to treat it is carried out with stones; in actual fact, by resting them physically on top the navel, one facilities the equilibrium of vital energies and reconnection to the Mother.
A further method is Ohashiatsu massage, which is a modern version of Shiatsu spread by the Japanese master Ohashi, which envisages self-massage exercises: very gentle pressures which start from the body' s centre of gravity, the 'ara', situated at the height of the navel.
It is known that Carlos Castaneda (a famous anthropologist) recounts in his book "The Island of Tonal" how Don Juan (Nagual, shaman) wants to explain how to calm down, and says: "... 'the secret does not lie in shaking one's head, but in the sensations which reach the eyes from the area below the stomach. It is this which makes one shake one's head' . He rubbed the area around the navel". (This is a further demonstration of the importance of gentle massage in regaining equilibrium).
What transpires from all the doctrines illustrated earlier is the health benefits that originate from gently massaging (without any pressure) this zone defined as the most important zone of the body, as it unites the vital energy. It is here that tension intensifies. The unwinding of tensions by means of a gentle massage and/o warmth helps one to reach a state of complete tranquillity (no stress and equilibrium).
In addition to everything illustrated so far, when a man is born, he is rooted/centred in the navel (only later does the heart develop as the centre of the emotions); in fact, if we observe a child breathing, he breathes with his stomach, not with the head, and not with the heart, and, actually, his navel rises and falls.
The respiration technique of every "wellbeing" discipline mainly teaches the importance of respiration from/for the diaphragm.
In longevity exercises in particular, there are no precise indications on the moments during an exercise when the respiration cycle should start and end, as it always starts from and returns to the diaphragm. To teach correct respiration, the students are advised to rest one hand on the umbilical area because when they touch that precise spot, their awareness (attention) is brought there, and the result thereof is greater ease in learning correct respiration.
Furthermore, in yoga, one is taught to breath "very deeply", i.e. right down to the navel. Also in Taiji quan (martial art, psychophysical gymnastics, dynamic meditation), respiration is taught in the same way as in the majority of Taoist exercises. One of the principles proclaimed is that of "concentrating one's breath in the lower cinnabar field" (qi chen dantian): a point most often localised as three inches below the navel, although, according to certain authors, it is between the navel and the kidneys.
Certain healing disciplines recommend becoming aware of one's umbilical area. In fact, the Tao defines the navel as "the great mother", whose task is to protect us. Scholars of this discipline recommend one concentrates on it to feel a force flowing which is extraordinary for one's physical wellbeing. Furthermore, navel therapy unites meditation and respiration by concentrating on the "elixir field", which is located right below the navel. By stimulating and warming this zone of the human body, one can reinforce the immune system and re-establish a state of harmony and wellbeing. It acts against stress.
One of the numerous other known healing techniques is self-therapy with colour, otherwise known as Varna Paranayama. The interesting thing is that this, very simple, technique, like the others mentioned, starts from becoming aware of the navel zone. The self-therapy process occurs by imagining a colour starting from the navel zone and making its way towards the outside of the body, in every direction.
Returning to Carlos Castaneda, in "The Eagle's Gift", the famous anthropologist recounts what he had been told by 'La Gorda' : "The Nagual, Juan Matus, used to place cold, wet river pebbles on my stomach to make me feel that area. Or he would place a weight on me; I had a piece of lead which he had procured for me. He used to make me close my eyes and focus my attention on the spot where the weight was. Every time I did it, I would fall asleep. But this did not concern him. It does not matter what you do, as long as your attention is focused on your stomach. In the end, I learned to focus on that spot without needing to place anything on it. One day I started dreaming alone. I could feel my abdomen right at the sport where the Nagual had placed the weight so many times before; then I fell asleep all of a sudden - as was usual for me -, but this time, something right inside my stomach was pulling. I saw a reddish glare, and had a wonderful dream. But as soon as I tried to tell it to Nagual, I understood that it had not been a normal dream. There was no way I would manage to tell him it; all I knew was that I had felt very happy and very strong. He told me it had been a dream. "From then on, he no longer put weights on me. He let me dream without interfering. From time to time, he would ask me to talk to him about it and he gave me advice. That's the right way to teach someone how to dream".
It therefore appears evident how once we fed - by means of this centre, the navel - on everything from the physical mother in the maternal womb: vitality, health, food ..., and now, from this centre we feed on the environment around us.
As Dr. Neader Butto affirms in his book 'The Seventh Sense': "the umbilical cord was tied in this centre during the intrauterine life; through this link we received our mother 's vitality and health and this fact has remained a functional memory due to which concern for our health is experienced at the level of this centre ". He continues by affirming that: "Through the front centre we receive energy from other people, we enjoy them and, in exchange, we give them our love ".
Moreover, in the times of Patanjali (the famous yoga commentator), the centre of the human personality was not the brain, it was the heart. And earlier still, it was not even the heart. The centre was even lower, near the navel.
In antiquity, the navel was still considered the spring of vitality, the original source from whence all else came: body, mind and everything. When one is in chaos, the brain stops working. For instance, if one is driving the car and someone pulls out in front of us unexpectedly, we react in such a sudden way that our actions cannot be the work of the brain. The brain needs time. It must think about what to do and what not to do. When there is a risk of an accident and one brakes sharply, one feels a sensation near the navel, as though the stomach were reacting. One's awareness has been driven towards the navel because of the accident. If one could predict the accident, the brain would be in a position to answer. But when one is in an accident, something mysterious happens: one notices that one' s awareness has moved towards the navel; for the Orientals, it is "the door between the sky and the earth". And fear leads us to experience poor respiration. As if this door, this "mouth of the soul", were feeding - for a moment - on a food which is unhealthy for us. A food (the fright or fear, in this case) which brings imbalance, and consequently illness, if one does not intervene promptly to remedy it. Not by chance, the poet Alberto Sighele, in his book 'Vorrei Potertene Pariare' [translation: 'I'd like to be able to talk to you about it'] writes: "the navel is the cobweb that holds in emotions like drops". In terms of energy, fear enters us via this mouth. A physical object located above it directs our attention to its protection and defence: the defence of our door/mouth (navel), which is feeding on emotions (energy vibrations).
Facilitating an energy equilibrium, wellbeing and health. If one asks a Zen monk: "With what do you think?", he will place his hand on his stomach. When Westerners came into in contact with these Japanese monks for the first time, they had trouble understanding. "What nonsense! How you can think with- the stomach!"
But the Zen answer is significant. Awareness can use any centre of the body, and the centre that is nearest its original source is the navel. The brain is the farthest, therefore if the vital energy moves toward the exterior, the brain becomes the centre of awareness. But if the vital energy moves towards the interior, in the end, the navel becomes the centre.
A psychological implication is given by the fashion, in this period, which obliges one to bare one's navel. There are beautiful women who feel defrauded of their womanly dignity by being compelled by fashion (to keep up with the times) to show their navel.
In addition, a' fair few protests have come from Christians or moralists who are rebelling against the fashion for bare navels; in fact, on 16th August 2005 Monsignor Domenico Stabia, parish priest of the Church of the Holy Trinity in
Potenza, hurled forth this anathema during the Mass: "enough of these navels on show.... What we have reached is not the beauty of nudity but the nudity of beauty, which is an altogether different matter".
Furthermore, in May 2003, Prof. Maurizio Di Capri, deputy head of the Marco Polo Technical Institute for Tourism, in Rimini, issued a circular against bare midriffs, which banned female pupils from entering the classroom with their stomachs on show. This circular started up a series of polemics, which ended by gaining the youngsters' agreement. Many people also think that keeping the navel covered is a matter of decorum. Protecting, covering and defending this zone offers sure physical, psychological and energy benefits.
From what is stated above, it can be inferred that there are many aspects linked to the navel - physical, psychological, moral and behavioural - and therefore the navel results in being a very important zone of the body which must be defended and protected, as well as cared for with attention. In fact, the applicant has dedicated much time to research into how the different philosophies, Oriental disciplines, therapy and treatment methods consider the navel and the surrounding zone. For instance, in Japanese culture the 'ki' is the term that indicates the "individual" energy that is found underneath the navel and is part of the 'rei', in the 'dan dien' point, which is the centre of creation. It is well known that, at present, nothing exists, no element or accessory designed to protect the navel, except the usual garments. A further, perhaps more frivolous aspect emerges from the fact that, at present, our frenetic and busy lives require us to change appearance without having, very often, the time to change clothing and accessories, therefore the possibility of changing one's look, by changing one garment, one detail, one element or one or more accessories, permits one to adapt the clothing to the environment and the circumstance of the moment. In fact, people spend the majority of the time outside their homes and so, over the course of the day, various circumstances are manifested in which it is necessary to be able to change one' s appearance without having the possibility of returning home to do so.
Finally, nowadays, fashion proposes many new ideas, every season, so there is a constant attention from users of clothing, underwear and accessories, to ensure the different garments worn are always perfectly combined and coordinated, and in line with the dictates of fashion.
Disclosure of Invention
The aim of the present invention is essentially to solve the problems of the commonly known technique, overcoming the drawbacks, shortcomings and situations described above with a navel cover device able to offer the umbilical zone protection, above all in these times when fashion demands bare stomachs.
A second aim of the present invention is to realise a navel cover device able to permit the user to have an accessory which contributes to reaching a better state of physical, psychological and energetic wellbeing.
A further aim of the present invention is to realise a navel cover device able to feature great ease of use and to permit an action for massaging the umbilical zone with a therapeutic action which stimulates a condition of wellbeing in the person. A still further aim of the present invention is to realise a navel cover device which permits the user to vary - every time one so wishes - the aesthetics of the garment and the combinations of colours and forms according to the clothing, necessities, fashions or otherwise, thereby permitting the user, at the same time, to keep their stomach bare without having to show oneself completely, safeguarding one's personal intimacy. A further but not final aim of the present invention is to realise a navel cover device which is simple to realise and works well.
These aims and more besides, which will better emerge over the course of the present description, are essentially reached by a navel cover device, in accordance with the claims below.
Further characteristics and advantages of the present invention will better emerge from the detailed description which follows, with reference to the plates enclosed, provided purely in the form of a non-limiting example, in which: - figure 1 shows, schematically, a navel cover device according to the present invention as an accessory;
- figure 2 shows, the navel cover device in figure 1 worn by a user;
- figure 3 shows, schematically, a variant of the navel cover device in question in the fastening phase; - figure 4 shows the navel cover device in figure 3 worn by a user;
- figure 5 shows a navel cover device according to the present invention; figure 6 shows a further navel cover device.
With reference to the figures above, and in particular to figure 1 , n. 1 denotes, as a whole a navel cover device, according to the present invention. The navel cover device 1 in question is essentially constituted of a protective structure 2 which constitutes an actual shield for the umbilical zone and is realised with skin, leather, cork, wood, fabric, denim, lace, mother of pearl, etc. The protective structure 2 may be painted, embroidered or open-worked with designs with the most varied configurations, as shown in figures 5 and 6, or decorated with beads, sequins, glitter, ribbons and decorations of any kind, in order to be a decorative accessory, which is fashionable and trendy, as well as protective. In addition, the protective structure 2 may feature any form and dimensions and the surface in contact with the user' s skin is smooth and soft in order to provide a pleasant sensation. Furthermore, the protective structure 2 is fitted with at least one couple of small slits 3 and 4 envisaged to house at least one fastening element 5 which creates a lacing around the user's body.
In agreement with the present embodiment and as shown in the example in figure 1 , there may be more than one couple of slits 3 and the same applies to slits 4.
In the navel cover device in question, a first lacing system is obtained by engaging a first end of the fastening element 5 in a first slit 3 by means of a knot 30, as shown in figure 3 and the second end in the second slit 3a again by means of a knot 30a. At this point, a second fastening element 5a is engaged with a first end in a first slit 4 and the free end is passed over the first fastening element 5 and locked, again by means of a knot, to the second slit 4a.
A further fastening system for the device envisages said lacing being obtained by engaging a first end of the fastening element 5 in a first slit 3 by means of a knot 30 and, after passing the fastening element around the body of the user, the free end of the fastening element is inserted into the second slit 4 and the fastening element is locked by means of a clamp knot.
A different system envisages a fastening element being restrained in each slit 3 and 4 by means of a slip knot, as shown in figure 5, and the two free ends knotted on the user' s back or mutually connected by means of a fastening hook operated hy pressure or an engagement or of any other typology, but of an essentially known type, such as plastic, metal or leather hooks etc. Similarly, the device according to the present invention may be fastened and laced at the front. In greater detail, the fastening element is constituted of a small cord made of leather, fabric or another material, ribbons, yarns, sashes, leather, strings of beads, chains, etc.
In addition to everything illustrated so far, the navel cover device permits the umbilical zone to be shielded, protecting it against small blows and maintaining the body temperature without exposing a particularly sensitive and delicate zone to sudden temperature changes and exercising a gentle therapeutic massage action.
Furthermore, the navel cover device permits the user to have a fashionable accessory which is trendy and which becomes a personal ornament in the same way as a jewel or a scarf. In particular, the navel cover device may also be worn underneath the usual garments as a decorative element or seduction accessory which also exercises the beneficial massage and warming actions described earlier. Following this predominantly structural description, the operation of the device in question is outlined below. When one wishes to cover one's navel or protect it or massage it etc, it is sufficient for the user to wear a navel cover device which, by covering the navel, shields the umbilical zone against the cold, blows and other things, and will exercise a gentle massage action in this zone, permitting an improvement of the user's physical and psychological equilibrium. In this way the present invention achieves the aims set. The navel cover device in question permits its user to have a structure which covers the umbilical area without compressing it and without obstructing its movements, thereby performing both a physical shielding function deriving from the protection against blows and sudden coldness in this particularly delicate zone, and a psychological supporting function associated directly with said protective sensation which this structure brings. Advantageously, the navel cover device offers the presence of a slight warmth and of a delicate and continuous contact on the area around the navel which proves extremely useful to draw one's attention to and raise awareness of this zone. An awareness which can translate into a help and an incentive to use the abdomen in the respiratory process. In fact, to ensure complete and deep respiration one must utilise the diaphragm, in addition to the lungs, an action which not only permits one to take in a greater quantity of air but which also entails, contemporaneously, a constant massage, with consequent benefits, of all the abdominal organs. In addition, 'correct' respiration, as well as bringing equilibrium and preventing anxious states (present with thoracic respiration) also features, among other things, the advantage of facilitating digestive work and accelerating internal secretions, thanks to the pressure exercised on the various organs concerned. Furthermore, a person wearing a protective structure which does not compress, which massages gently and, contemporaneously, prevents them getting cold in this delicate point, is helped to reach a state of wellbeing and an improvement of their physical health. Facilitating the energy equilibrium in this precise point, as the Oriental disciplines teach us (by protecting the navel, warming it and massaging it gently) translates into a bringing of equilibrium to the individual on all levels.
A further aspect encountered with the device in question in the present invention derives from the fact that the protective structure covers and gently massages particular points of the abdomen. In fact, in acupuncture, for example, the navel is never pricked by a needle, just massaged delicately and/or cauterised. Acupuncture aims to restore the equilibrium of the Yang and the Inn, upholding that all morbid disturbances depend on this imbalance. The meridian concerned, which is crossed, is the meridian of the vessel of conception (Jenn Mo). The point of the meridian which coincides with the navel is the CV8 SHEN QUE (Palace of spiritual energy) and the device in question, as mentioned earlier, also sometimes covers and gently massages points CV 7 YIN JIAO (Crossing of the Yins) and CV 9 SHIU FEN (Distribution of water), in addition to the kidney meridians: KI 15 ZHONO ZHU (Central flow) KI 16 HUANG SHU (Point of transport to the vital centres) and KI 17.
In addition to everything explained so far, there are other psychological and energy aspects which justify the protection of the navel. In the regression technique, the Chakra Manipura, located in the abdominal area, represents the way of "entering" yourself, through your own centre. Furthermore, some people believe that the navel may be the 'key' to reaching the interior of the body: "placing your finger inside your navel is a little like having your eyes revolve by 180° and looking inside yourself ...". Advantageously, with the device in question, one can also reach and maintain and a dynamic equilibrium, which is both physical and internal, by giving care and attention to the umbilical zone. In fact, as already mentioned, one of the reasons for the importance of the abdomen in Oriental tradition is due to the body' s centre of gravity, which is found there. It is an area of physical equilibrium which is identified as an area of equilibrium of the individual's personality. Through centralisation, i.e. focusing of attention on this area, one can reach a state of deep internal stability.
In addition to everything stated so far, the device also allows one to protect the umbilical zone, which is delicate, from the sun's rays. Furthermore, not all navels are regular from the point of view of the suture, therefore covering the navel with the device in question allows one to cover an aesthetic flaw and be able to wear low-waist clothing, show one's stomach without problems, also preventing, consequently, psychological complexes. A further aspect of the navel cover device emerges from the fact that, since the navel is an anatomic element which, together with the breasts, lips, legs, and bottom, is by now considered one of the most seductive feminine "details" and which therefore attracts so much attention from men, a woman has even been voted as having the sexiest navel in the world, and many women are having recourse to plastic surgery on the navel to make sure it is perfect. It is known that discretely covering a sexy part of the anatomy renders it even more seductive and intriguing, therefore the navel cover device in question also meets this requirement.
Finally, the navel cover device in question proves simple to realise and works well. Naturally, numerous modifications and variants can be applied to the present invention while remaining within the scope of invention as defined by the characteristics herein.
