Abstract
A computer-implemented method for remedying a computer problem for an affected computer using a USB-based integrated user assist device (IUAD). The IUAD includes an operating system and a health check application to enable the affected computer to boot up and to perform a plurality of health checks and provide a report. Facilities are also included to execute a VOIP application or a remote assist application to assist the user to remedy the computer problem.
Claims
1. A computer-implemented method for remedying a computer problem for an affected computer using an external peripheral memory device, said external peripheral memory device being external to said affected computer, the method comprising: loading an operating system from said external peripheral memory device to said affected computer; executing said operating system on said affected computer; executing a health check on said affected computer using a health check application that is provided with said external peripheral memory device, said health check performing a plurality of checks on said affected computer to attempt to detect a cause of said computer problem; creating a report from said heath check application based on said health check; executing a VOIP (voice-over-IP) application using at least one of said affected computer and said external peripheral memory device, said VOIP application being included in said external peripheral memory device; and establishing a voice call, using at least said VOIP application and said affected computer, between a user of said affected computer and a support personnel to allow said user of said affected computer and said support personnel to converse.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein said external peripheral memory device represents a USB flash memory device.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein said operating system represents a Linux operating system.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein said VOIP (voice-over-IP) application is executed directly from said external peripheral memory device for performing said establishing said voice call.
5. The method of claim 1 further comprising executing a remote assistant application to provide said report to said support personnel.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein said affected computer represents a Windows- based computer system.
7. A computer-implemented method for remedying a computer problem for an affected computer using an external peripheral memory device, said external peripheral memory device being external to said affected computer, the method comprising: automatically loading an operating system from said external peripheral memory device to said affected computer; automatically executing said operating system on said affected computer; automatically executing a health check on said affected computer using a health check application that is provided with said external peripheral memory device, said health check performing a plurality of checks on said affected computer to attempt to detect a cause of said computer problem; automatically executing a VOIP (voice-over-IP) application using at least one of said affected computer and said external peripheral memory device, said VOEP application being included in said external peripheral memory device; and automatically establishing a voice call, using at least said VOD? application and said affected computer, between a user of said affected computer and a support personnel to allow said user of said affected computer and said support personnel to converse.
8. The method of claim 7 wherein said external peripheral memory device represents a USB flash memory device.
9. The method of claim 7 wherein said operating system represents a Linux operating system.
10. The method of claim 7 wherein said VOD? (voice-over-IP) application is executed directly from said external peripheral memory device for performing said establishing said voice call.
11. The method of claim 7 further comprising executing a remote assistant application to provide said report to said support personnel.
12. The method of claim 7 wherein said affected computer represents a Windows- based computer system.
13. An external peripheral memory device having computer readable code embodied therein, said computer readable code being configured to remedy a computer problem for an affected computer, said external peripheral memory device being external to said affected computer, said external peripheral memory device comprising: computer readable code for automatically loading an operating system from said external peripheral memory device; computer readable code for automatically executing said operating system on said affected computer; computer readable code for automatically executing a health check on said affected computer using a health check application that is provided with said external
13 peripheral memory device, said health check performing a plurality of checks on said affected computer to attempt to detect a cause of said computer problem; computer readable code for automatically executing a VOIP (voice-over-IP) application using at least one of said affected computer and said external peripheral memory device, said VOIP application being included in said external peripheral memory device; and computer readable code for automatically establishing a voice call, using at least said VOIP application and said affected computer, between a user of said affected computer and a support personnel to allow said user of said affected computer and said support personnel to converse.
14. The integrated user assist device of claim 13 wherein said external peripheral memory device represents a USB flash memory device.
15. The integrated user assist device of claim 13 wherein said operating system represents a Linux operating system.
16. The integrated user assist device of claim 13 wherein said VOIP (voice-over- IP) application is configured to be executed directly from said external peripheral memory device for performing said establishing said voice call.
17. The integrated user assist device of claim 13 further comprising computer readable code for executing a remote assistant application to provide said report to said support personnel.
18. The integrated user assist device of claim 13 wherein said affected computer represents a Windows-based computer system.
