Definitions
- the invention relates to lining members and a lining arrangement for a surface to be lined utilizing such lining members. More particularly, but not exclusively, the invention relates to lining members for lining receptacles and/or surfaces for use in storing and/or conveying abrasive material, such as mineral ore, and to a lining arrangement utilizing such lining members, such as skips, chutes and dump trucks.
- sacrificial liners are often used to protect the surface of a receptacle in or along which the ore is to be conveyed.
- the liners typically comprise a plurality of individual liner elements, which can be independently secured to a surface in side-by- side configuration so as to form a substantially continuous liner, but without having to replace the entire liner should there be localized wear at some of the individual liner elements. It is also advisable that the liner elements be constructed of suitably small size to enable the liner elements to be manhandled.
- the replaceable liners are generally fixed to the inside of the receptacle, with elongate gaps being present between the edges of adjacent liners.
- An undesirable consequence that shorten the useful life of the receptacles associated with this practice is that accelerated erosion occurs along and between the liner edges due to the flow of abrasive material along such edges and inside the gap formed between the adjacent edges. As the gap widens due to abrasion, wear damage is also caused to the receptacle wall that is supposed to be protected by the liner, as such further exacerbating the abrasion effect on the system as a whole.
- a lining member suitable for use in lining a surface to be shielded against abrasive material, the lining member including a substantially planar body; and a raised lip section extending from at least one end zone of the planar body; the raised lip section being adapted to, in use, overlie at least part of a planar body of an adjacent lining member when the lining members are positioned on the surface shielded against abrasive material.
- the raised lip section may include an oblique section that terminates in an overlying section that is substantially parallel to the planar body of the lining member.
- raised lip sections to extend from at least two end zones of the planar body.
- the raised lip sections may extend from two adjacent, substantially perpendicular end zones of the planar body.
- the lip section may only extend partially the length of the end zones.
- the raised lip sections to extend from opposing end zones of the planar body.
- planar body is substantially rectangular or square when viewed in plan.
- the lining member to include engagement formations to enable the lining member to engage complementary engagement formations provided on adjacently positioned lining members.
- the engagement formations may be in the form of at least one protrusion extending from the lining member, the protrusion being configured and dimensioned for engaging a complementary receiving aperture provided in an adjacently positioned lining member.
- the protrusion may be provided in the planar section of the lining member, and the receiving aperture may be provided in the raised lip section extending from the lining member.
- the engagement formations may also include at least one receiving aperture provided in the lining member, the receiving aperture being configured and dimensioned for receiving a complementary protrusion extending from an adjacently positioned lining member.
- the lining member may also include a securing formation for use in securing the lining member to the shielded surface.
- the securing formation may be in the form of at least one aperture for receiving a threaded securing member therethrough.
- the lining member is made of metal.
- a lining arrangement suitable for lining a surface to be shielded against abrasive material, the lining arrangement including a plurality of lining members as described above, the lining members being secured to the shielded surface in side-by-side configuration in order for adjacent lining members to at least partially overlie one another.
- a lining arrangement suitable for lining a surface to be shielded against abrasive material
- the lining arrangement including: at least one substantially planar lining member being securable to the surface to be lined; and an at least partially resilient backing member being locatable between the lining member and the surface to be lined; the resilient backing member being sandwiched between the lining member and the shielded surface when the lining member is secured to the surface.
- the backing member is made of elastomeric material.
- the lining member is in the form of a lining member as described hereinbefore.
- the lining arrangement includes a plurality of lining members located adjacent one another so as to form a substantially continuous liner.
- the lining arrangement includes a plurality of backing members located adjacent one another so as to form a substantially continuous backing sheet.
- the lining member may be bolted to the shielded surface, in so doing trapping the backing member between the lining member and the shielded surface.
- An adhesive layer may also be provided between the backing member and the shielded surface, and/or between the backing member and the lining member.
- the lining member may be connected to the shielded surface by way of securing bolts extending though securing apertures provided in the lining member.
- the apertures for receiving the securing bolts preferably have a larger diameter than shanks of the securing bolts, so as to allow movement between the lining members and the securing bolts, and as such between the lining member and the shielded surface.
- the securing bolts may be secured to the shielded surface by way of lock nuts.

- Figure 12 is a cross-sectional view of a further embodiment of the lining arrangement in accordance with the invention.
- FIG. 1 A lining arrangement 15 known in the prior art is shown in figures 1 and 2.
- Lining members 15.1 in the form of hard, wear resistant plates are secured to a surface 15.2 to be shielded against abrasive material by way of countersunk bolts 15.5.
- Longitudinal 15.3 and transversal 15.4 gaps are left between adjacently secured lining members, and the idea is that fine particles of the abrasive material will fill up these gaps so as to form a protective layer that will prevent wear of the shielded surface 15.2.
- the inventor has found that such protection indeed occurs at the transversal W
- gaps 15.4 (being substantially perpendicular relative to the direction of particle flow indicated by arrow A), but that excessive wear occurs in the longitudinal gaps 15.3 where the elongate gaps are aligned with the direction of particle flow indicated by arrow A.
- the degree and rate of wear is exacerbated as the longitudinal gaps 15.3 widen due to wear.
- FIGS 3 and 4 show one embodiment of a new liner arrangement 10 in accordance with the invention.
- a plurality of lining members 30 cover a shielded surface 20 (which would otherwise be exposed to abrasive material).
- Each lining member 30 comprises a planar body 31 in the form of a sheet of hard material, for example steel.
- Each lining member 30 also includes a raised lip section 33 that extends from an end zone 32 of the lining member 30.
- the raised lip section 33 includes an oblique section 33.1 as well as an overlying section 33.2, which is substantially parallel to the planar body 31 of the lining member 30.
- Securing apertures 34 are provided for securing the lining member 30 to the shielded surface 20, and are suitable for receiving securing means such as threaded bolts, and in particular countersunk bolts.
- securing means such as threaded bolts, and in particular countersunk bolts.
- the shielded surface 20 may be an outer surface of a number of different metal sheets, including the body of a mining skip, the load carrying surface of a dump truck and the surface of a conveyance chute.
- the securing apertures 34 of adjacent lining members 30 is also aligned, thus enabling two adjacent lining members 30 to be secured to the shielded surface 20, and thus also to one another, by way of a threaded bolt.
- This arrangement results in the lining members 30 forming a substantially continuous and rigid reinforcing ring that, in addition to wear protection, also contributes to the structural strength of the shielding surface 20 to which it is secured. It is foreseen that this characteristic may result in a reduction of the thickness of the sheet having the shielded surface 20.
- FIG. 5 A further embodiment of the improved lining arrangement 10 in accordance with the invention is shown in figures 5 and 6.
- the lining members 30 of this embodiment do not include the raised lip sections 33, and longitudinal gaps 15.3 are still present.
- additional backing members 50 in the form of resilient backing sheets are provided between the shielded surface 20 and the lining members 30.
- the backing members 50 are typically made from elastomeric material such as a suitable type of rubber. Both the lining members 30 and the backing members 50 are secured to the shielded surface 20 by way of countersunk bolts 38.1 that engage self-locking nuts 38.2.
- the aperture 34 in the lining member 30 is slightly larger than the shank of the countersunk bolt 38.1 so as to allow movement of the lining member 30 relative to the stationary bolt shank when abrasive material exerts a force on the lining member 30 to compress the backing member 50.
- the self-locking nuts 38.2 prevent the bolts 38.1 form becoming loose when the tension is reduced upon compression of the resilient backing members 50.
- the resilient backing members 50 may be made slightly larger than the lining members 30 so that when installed the backing members 50 leave no gaps below the edges of the lining members 30. The longitudinal 15.3 and transversal 15.4 gaps between the lining members 30 will therefore not extend up to the shielded surface 20.
- the inventor has found that with this arrangement, whereby the resilient backing members 50 are allowed to be compressed as loads from the abrasive materials are exerted on the lining members 30, the operational life of the lining members 30 are extended compared to the operational life of the lining members 30 should the lining members be secured to the shielded surface 20 directly. At the same time the occurrence of corrosion between the lining member 30 and the shielded surface 20 is practically eliminated in case of wet and abrasive material, as the backing member 50 effectively forms a seal against unwanted moisture ingress. It is also foreseen that a suitable adhesive may be applied between the backing member 50 and the shielded surface 20 and/or between the backing member 50 and the lining member 30. The inventor believes that this would further prevent the occurrence of crevice corrosion.
- resilient backing members 50 may likewise be utilized in the lining arrangement as shown in figures 3 and 4.
- Figures 7 and 8 shows two corner sections of receptacles utilizing the same conceptual approach as described above.
- the two corner lining members 30 include the raised lips sections 33 as described hereinbefore, but in addition includes opposing corner lip sections 39 that in use overlie a corner section 35.
- a backing member 50 is also included between the lining members 30 and the shielded surfaces 20.
- the corner section 35 may be located closer to the shielded surface 20 than the lining members 30, due to a backing member 50 of reduced thickness being used behind the corner section 35.
- the lining members 30 it will not be necessary for the lining members 30 to include comer lip sections 39, as ends of the lining members 30 will merely overlie the receded corner sections 35. It will be appreciated that this will simplify the design of the corner arrangements.
- FIG. 9 A further embodiment of the lining arrangement 10 is shown in figures 9 and 10.
- the lining members 30 described in this embodiment can be used with or without backing members 50.
- the lining members 30 include the first raised lip sections 33 as described in the embodiment of figures 3 and 4, but also includes second raised lips sections 36 that extend from the lining members 30 from end zones adjacent and perpendicular to the first raised lip sections 33.
- neither the first raised lip sections 33 nor the second raised lip sections 36 extend along the entire length of the lining members 30 so as to enable the lip sections extending from adjacent lining members 30 to, in use, abut as is shown in figure 9, in so doing closing both the longitudinal and the transversal gaps.
- the lining members 30 are each only secured to the shielding surface by two bolts 38.1.
- Additional engagement means in the form of protrusions 37.1 and complementary receiving apertures 37.2 are however provided to enable adjacent lining members 30 to be secured relative to one another.
- a plan view of a single lining member 30 is shown in figure 11.
- the protrusions 37.1 typically extend from the planar sections 31 , whereas the receiving apertures 37.2 are located in the raised lip sections 33 and 36.
- Receptacles such as skips and other containers often have localized areas that are exposed to substantial impact loads when the abrasive material is loaded into the receptacle. It is know in the prior art to provide thick, planar resilient pads to absorb the energy, particularly if the abrasive material includes rocks.
- Such resilient pads usually comprise resilient sheets mounted on metal backing plates, which allows such assemblies to be secured to shielded surface of the receptacle.
- the inventor has found that the resilient sheets have a short operational lifespan due to the sheets being cut and damaged by sharp edges of rock impacting against such sheets. Also, as is the case with the traditional linings as described above, corrosion occurs between the backing plates and the shielded surface. The inventor has thus found that the same principles of the present invention can also be applied to the particular high-impact applications.
- An embodiment of the invention that would facilitate the same is shown in figure 12.
- the lining arrangement of this embodiment includes lining members 60 as well as resilient backing members 50.
- the lining members 60 include inclined sections 61 and planar sections 62.
- the lining members 60 includes securing sections 65, where countersunk bolts 66 are fitted through the lining member and through a section of the backing member 50 that is relatively thin, but of sufficient thickness to allow the lining member 60 to pivot along the bolts 66, whilst at the same time anchoring the lining member 60 for when abrasive material impact against the lining member 60.
- ends 51 of the backing members may be shaped to be complementary with the inclined sections 61 and the securing sections 65 of adjacent lining members 60 so as to allow the inclined lining members 60 to be located end to end to form a substantially continuous lining having individually displaceable sub-sections.
- the lining members 30 in accordance with the prior art are generally made from metal, and steel plates with a Brinell hardness number of 600 is often used.
- the inventor has found that improved wear resistance can be obtained if welding filler material, having a Brinell hardness number of about 600, and which also includes Chrome carbides, is applied on the surface of a steel plate that may have a Brinell hardness number of less than 600.
- the inventor has found that this liner construction even further increases the life of a liner member.
