Abstract

A water intake system compatible with government, municipal, or industrial facilities that consume large amounts of water from an ocean, sea, lake, river, or other body of water includes a device that reduces the amount of marine life killed in the water intake and treatment process. The device can include an impingement, entrainment, and entrapment mitigation device at least partially surrounding a water intake and including a plurality of apertures sized to prevent entry of marine organisms into the water intake; and/or a velocity reduction system comprising a inner velocity reduction component having thereon at least one aperture through which water can flow, and a outer velocity reduction component surrounding at least a portion of the inner velocity reduction component.
