Abstract
An article having a plastic core and at least one plastic coating layer, the coating layer formed by reactive injection molding using approximately 60 parts by weight liquid isocyanate component of a polyurethane, and approximately 100 parts per weight liquid polyol component of a polyurethane.
Claims
1. An article having a plastic core and at least one plastic coating layer, the coating layer formed by reactive injection molding using approximately 60 parts by weight liquid isocyanate component of a polyurethane, and approximately 100 parts per weight liquid polyol component of a polyurethane, wherein the plastic core is a polymeric material chosen from the group of polypropylene, and expanded polystyrene (EPS).
2. A method for manufacturing a plastic article including the steps of forming a core of predetermined shape and size, and coating the core in a mold with a coating composition including approximately 60 parts by weight liquid isocyanate component of a polyurethane, and approximately 100 parts per weight liquid polyol component of a polyurethane wherein the coating occurs at low pressure of between approximately 0.5 to 8 atmospheres and at least approximately 20° Celsius for period of time calculated according to the thickness of the coating required, wherein the plastic core is a polymeric material chosen from the group of polypropylene, and expanded polystyrene (EPS).
3. A coating composition for a plastic article, the coating composition including approximately 60 parts by weight liquid isocyanate component of a polyurethane, and approximately 100 parts per weight liquid polyol component of a polyurethane which are mixed and applied to a plastic article to be coated wherein the coating occurs at low pressure of between approximately 0.5 to 8 atmospheres and at least approximately 20° Celsius, wherein the plastic core is a polymeric material chosen from the group of polypropylene, and expanded polystyrene (EPS).
4. An article according to claim 1 wherein the article is a transport pallet having an upper support surface upon which goods are located and a plurality of foot members spaced about the pallet
5. An article according to claim 1 wherein the article is a transport pallet having an upper support surface upon which goods are located and a substantially continuous lower surface.
6. An article according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein a lower surface includes at least one shaped engagement portion to engage with a correspondingly shaped portion on the upper support surface of an adjacent pallet.
7. An article according to claim 4 further including at least one passage defined through a portion of the pallet to receive and locate attachment strapping
8. An article according to claim 4 further including at least one shaped portion provided on the upper support surface shaped to correspond and engage with a container holding goods located on the upper support surface.
9. An article according to claim 8 further including at least one shaped portion provided on a lower surface shaped to correspond and engage with a container holding goods located on the upper support surface of an adjacent pallet.
10. An article according to claim 4 further including one or more openings through the pallet from the upper surface to a lower support surface allowing water to drain through the pallet.
11. An article according to claim 4 wherein the upper support surface is provided with a high friction surface to minimise slippage of the goods loaded onto the pallet.
12. An article according to claim 4 further including side members that support the upper above a surface and maintain separation between them, the side members including openings therein for receiving the tynes of a lifting device such that said tynes may engage the pallet for lifting said pallet.
13. An article according to claim 1 wherein the core defines the shape and configuration of the article.
14. An article according to claim 1 wherein the polyurethane coating used is an aromatic polyurethane.
15. An article according to claim 1 further including one or more additives selected from the group including, catalysts, chain extenders, blowing agents, flame retardants, pigments, fillers, humidity absorbers or water scavengers.
16. A method as claimed in Claim 2 including the step of mixing the reactive components in a mixhead prior to entry into the mold.
17. A method as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the polyurethane system used is a liquid-liquid system which uses neither solvents (VOCs) nor CFCs. 29
18. A method as claimed in Claim 2 further including the step of introducing short strand reinforcing directly into one of the two reactive constituents.
19. A method as claimed in Claim 2 further including the step of introducing continuous filament mats, fabrics, complexes or chopped strand preforms into the mold before the injection takes place.
20. A method as claimed in Claim 2 further including the step of introducing granulated rubber into one of the two reactive constituents.
21. A method as claimed in Claim 2 further including the step of injecting the polyurethane components into the mold at an elevated temperature of approximately 6O0C.
22. A method as claimed in Claim 2 further including the step of preheating the core to approximately 60°C to prevent unnecessary cooling of the polyurethane mixture upon contact with the core.
23. A plastic pallet manufactured from a polymer melt mixture of at least a polystyrene and at least one other polymer component chosen from the group including polyurethane, polyphenylene oxide, an elastomer, polyethylene and polypropylene, which is then expanded.
24. A plastic pallet according to claim 23 wherein the at least one polymer component is added at no greater that 10% by weight 25. An article according to claim 1 further including one or more voids formed in the article and adapted for the insertion of portions of different hardness material to be injected into the voids to add stiffness, strength or rigidity to the member.
