Description

Paint applicator
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
Field of the invention
The invention relates to a paint applicator comprising a handle, a flexible carrier connected to it and a smoothing-out device present around it. A paint applicator is here defined as an aid for the application of a layer of paint to an object.
Prior art
Such a paint applicator is known from American patent US 2.962.746. hi this the carrier is formed by a flexible sponge device and the smoothing-out device by a sponge layer for holding and spreading paint. The carrier and the smoothing-out device are here clamped between two halves of the handle. Paint is taken up by dipping the smoothing-out device in paint, which can then be applied to a surface.
The known paint applicator has an advantage over paint brushes in that a thinner paint layer can be applied to an object and therefore it has to be dipped into the paint less often. Moreover it makes no stripes in the paint, as no hairs are present. The known paint applicator has no trouble from hairs disturbingly left behind in the freshly applied paint layer. Further it is an important advantage that the paint applicator can be cleaned better than a paint brush, or even does not have to be cleaned at all as the smoothing-out device can be discarded after use and replaced with a new smoothing-out device.
The form and material properties of the holder are chosen to obtain the same flexibility as that of a brush. This means the known paint applicator can be moved in the same way during use as a brush so that the user does not have to get used to how the known paint applicator works.
Summary of the invention An objective of the invention is to provide a paint applicator of the sort described in the preamble which allows painting to be done more easily. For this purpose the paint applicator according to the invention is characterised in that the smoothing-out device comprises a smoothing layer made of a low-pile substance. This substance can be spread over surfaces to be painted and provides a good paint result. The substance is preferably made at least partly of polyester.
An embodiment of the paint applicator according to the invention is characterised in that the smoothing-out device also comprises a liquid absorbing layer, which is present between the smoothing layer and the carrier. This mean that more paint can be taken up when it is dipped into paint and therefore a larger area can be covered with one dip.
The liquid absorbing layer is preferably fastened to the smoothing layer. The smoothing-out device is also preferably fastened to the carrier.
The carrier is preferably formed by a plastic strip. The carrier is also preferably provided with holes. The paint taken up, which is present on one side of the carrier, can flow easily and quickly though these holes to the other side of the carrier, which at that moment is in contact with the surface to be painted.
A further embodiment of the paint applicator according to the invention is characterised in that the paint applicator comprises a first connecting piece that is fastened to an end of the handle, and a second connecting piece that is fastened to the carrier and which can be detached from the first connecting piece. The smoothing-out device can hereby be easily attached and removed without it having to be firmly gripped.
The second connecting piece preferably comprises a cover, which is pushed over the first connecting piece. To prevent the cover from accidentally slipping off the carrier, a further embodiment is characterised in that one edge of the cover is open, and a lip is fastened to the cover on the open edge, which Hp can be clicked between two protuberances present on the first connecting piece.
The lip by the fastening on the cover is preferably narrower than at a distance from the cover. This means the cover can be held better on the first connecting piece. A protuberance is preferably fastened to the carrier, which protrudes in the width- wise direction of the smoothing-out device. This protuberance can act as a guide during painting. During application the paint applicator can be held slightly tilted so that if the guiding element comes into contact with a window pane or strip of wood, the paint applicator can be moved in this position along the window pane or strip of wood, whilst being held in contact with the window pane or strip of wood with the guiding element by for example pressing it lightly against them. This means that neat lines can be applied and the smoothing-out device makes no contact with the window pane or strip of wood.
Note that the construction of the paint applicator, particularly the connecting pieces of the carrier, can also be used for a paint applicator in which the smoothing-out device can be of another construction and different materials can be used than described above.
Brief description of the drawings
The invention will be elucidated more fully below on the basis of drawings in which embodiments of the paint applicator according to the invention are shown. In these drawings:
Figure 1 shows a first embodiment of the paint applicator according to the invention in front elevation with the smoothing-out device free of the handle;
Figure 2 shows a disconnected smoothing-out device with a narrower width than the smoothing-out device shown in figure 1; Figure 3 shows a further smoothing-out device that is again narrower than the smoothing-out device shown in figure 2;
Figure 4 shows the paint applicator shown in figure 1 in side elevation in which the bulge of the smoothing-out device is clearly visible;
Figure 5 shows the paint applicator shown in figure 1 during use; Figure 6 shows a second embodiment of the paint applicator according to the invention in front elevation; and
Figure 7 shows the paint applicator shown in figure 6 in side elevation.
Detailed description of the drawings
Figure 1 shows a first embodiment of the paint applicator according to the invention in front elevation with the smoothing-out device free of the handle. The paint applicator 1 has a handle 3 with a first connecting piece 5 connected to it. The first connecting piece is formed by a flat strip that forms one whole with the handle. There is a small magnet 7 in the handle 3 whereby the paint applicator can be stuck against an iron paint bucket or another iron object. The paint applicator 1 also has a flexible carrier 9 with a second connecting piece 11 fastened to it, which is formed by a cover that is pushed over the first connecting piece 5. A smoothing-out device 13 is present around the carrier 9, which is composed of a liquid absorbing layer and a smoothing layer fastened to it. The smoothing-out device 13 is fastened with the liquid absorbing layer to the carrier 9.
A lip 15 is fastened to the cover by the open side, which can be clicked between two protuberances 17 in the form of ridges present on the first connecting piece 5. The Hp 15 is narrower by the fastening on the cover than at a distance from the cover so that it can clamp onto the protuberances 17.
The carrier 9 is provided with holes 19. This means that the paint taken up, which is present on one side of the carrier, can flow via these holes easily and quickly to the other side of the carrier, which at that moment is in contact with the surface to be painted.
A guiding element 21, which protrudes in the width- wise direction of the smoothing-out device 13, is fastened to the cover. The width-wise direction of the smoothing-out device is at right angles to the smoothing direction of the paint applicator. Figures 2 and 3 show further carriers 23, 25 with smoothing devices 27, 29 of different widths on them. These carriers 23, 25 can be simply exchanged with the carrier 9.
The smoothing-out device 13 is formed by a paint absorbing layer 13a and a smoothing layer 13b present on it, see figure 4. The smoothing layer is a low-pile polyester substance, which consists of about 80% polyester and 20% cotton. The paint absorbing layer is formed by a sponge that is glued to the smoothing layer. The paint applicator 1 according to the invention can apply an even, thin layer of paint to a surface with a single stroke, see figure 5.
Figures 6 and 7 show a second embodiment of the paint applicator according to the invention in front and side elevation respectively. This paint applicator 31 also has a handle 33 and a carrier 35. A bent rod is fastened to the handle, which thus forms the first connecting piece 37. The handle 33 with the first connecting piece 37 is the same as that of a paint roller. The paint applicator 31 also has a smoothing-out device 39, which is fastened on the carrier 35. A plate is fastened to the carrier that forms the second connecting piece 41. The second connecting piece 41 is provided with semi-circular lips 43 between which an end of the first connecting piece 37 is pushed and Ω-shaped springs 45 that are clamped to a part of the first connecting piece 37.
Although in the above the invention is explained on the basis of the drawings, it should be noted that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments shown in the drawings. The invention also extends to all embodiments deviating from the embodiments shown in the drawings within the context defined by the claims.
