[18] Reference will now be made in detail to the preferred embodiments of the present invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts.
[19] Prior to describing the present invention, although the present inventionwill hereinafter be disclosed as an example of the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) of the digital multimedia broadcasting, it should be noted that the scope of the present invention is not limited to the example of the EPG. Broadcastprogram information capable of allowing a user to graphically viewing the summarized content of a broadcast program will be referred to as preview information.
[20] The EPG provides the user with program information based on channels, and provides program information capable of allowing the user to view/record a broadcast program using the received program information. Therefore, the EPG may include channel information, program title information, or broadcast time information, etc.
[21] Generally, the EPG is configured in the form of encoded binary data, and is then transmitted to a destination. The EPG is implemented by decoding the above- mentioned binary data. The binary data is implemented with an XML (extensible Markup Language) format, such that the binary data of the XML format can be displayed on a screen.
[22] The EPG may have a plurality of elements. Although the XML-based EPG will be exemplarily disclosed in the present inventionto easily explain element structures of the EPG, it should be noted that the scope of the present inventionis not limited to the EPG implemented with the XML.
[23] The EPG may include service information including broadcast station information and broadcast channel information, and may also include program information- including information associated with the program scheduling. The EPG may include the Servicelnformation element as the uppermost element of the above-mentioned service information, and may include the epg element as the uppermost element of the program information.
[24] FlG. 1 is a conceptual diagram illustrating a hierarchical structure of a Serviceln- formation element from among several elements of the EPG according to the present invention. An example of the Servicelnformation element will hereinafter be described with reference to FIG. 1.
[25] Referring to FIG. 1, numbers of individual element blocks indicate the number of corresponding elements. For example, "0*" indicates that the number of corresponding elements is equal to or higher than a specific number "0", and "1*" indicates that the number of corresponding elements is equal to or higher than a specific number "1".
[26] The Servicelnformation is used as a container of the ensemble element. The ensemble element may include a frequency element including frequency information and a service element including each broadcast program.
[27] The ensemble element or the service element may include a serviceNameGroup element, a mediaDescription element, a conditional access (CA) element, a keyword elements, and a link element, etc.
[28] The serviceNameGroup element may include a short name, a medium name, and a long name of the ensemable. The mediaDescription element includes description in- formationof the ensemble. The CA element may include scramble information. The keyword information and the link element may include corresponding information pieces, respectively.
[29] The service element may include a servicelD element for distinguishing a corresponding service, a genre element for indicating servicecategories, and an epgLanguage element for indicating service languages. The EPG data is encoded by binary numbers, and is then transmitted to a destination according to a Multimedia Object Transfer (MOT) protocol.
[30] FIG. 2 is a conceptual diagram illustrating a hierarchicalstructure of an epg element from among the EPG according to the present invention.
[31] The epg element may include a schedule element, a program element, a pro- gramGroups element, and an alternateSource element. The schedule element may include program arrangement information within a given time range, and may further include a scope element and a serviceScope element under the above-mentioned program arrangement information. The programGroups element may be used to perform grouping of programs and may also be used to describe event information of programs of the group.
[32] The alternateSource element indicates whether the EPG informationcan be received from other sources, such that the received EPG information can be used. The program element and the programGroup element located under the programGroups element may include the scheduleNameGroup element, the mediaDescription element, the genre element, the keywords element, the memberOf element, and the link element, etc. The mediaDescription element from among the above-mentioned elements includes the multimedia element in order to transmit multimedia informationassociated with the program,
[33] FlG. 3 exemplarily shows an XML schema of the media Description element according to the present invention. The example of the schema of the mediaDescription element will hereinafter be described with reference to FlG. 3.
[34] The multimedia data linked to resources can be transmitted to a destination by the mediaDescription element. The "uri" attributes from among attributes of the mediaDescription element indicates the location of the resource including the multimedia information. According to the "simpleType" schema from among schema componentsof the mediaDescription element is mainly defined as logo images associated with the ensemble element, the service element, the program element, the programgroup element, and the programevent element.
[35] Exemplary schema components of FlG. 3 can define whether the logo image is a mono image or a color image, and can define whether the logo image is a regular tetragon or a right-angled tetragon. The attribute information of the multimedia information can define the width and height of the multimedia information. However, as can be seen from the mediaDescription element based on the example of FlG. 3, the program information can be used for a logo-image transmission case of the program, and cannot allow the user to graphically preview the summarized content of the program.
[36] Therefore, a method for transmitting broadcast program information according to an embodiment of the present invention can transmit broadcast program information, such that the user can graphically preview the summarized content ofany program from among several programs.
[37] In order to easily explain a method for transmitting broadcast program information,
FlG. 4 shows an exemplary XML schema of the EPG transferring a preview item according to an embodiment of the present invention. A method for transmitting broadcast program information according to an embodiment of the present invention will hereinafterbe described with reference to FlG. 4.
[38] The mediaDescription element of FlG. 4 may serve as a preview element for indicating program summarized information configured in the form of graphic data, and may include a videoclip element. The videoclip element may include a newly- defined type denoted by "videoclipType" of FlG. 4. The videoclipType element may include two attributes.
[39] The mime Value attribute defined by "mimeType" information may indicate resources of a transmission file, and may indicate a graphic format of the preview element using strings. In other words, the videoclip element may include resource information (e.g., an extension file name) for the preview function as "mimeValue" attributes.
[40] The "uri" attribute is defined by "urlType", and may indicate the location of resources acting as the summarized information of a graphic program using the string indicating either the address or the protocol. In otherwords, the videoclip element may include the location information of the resources of the preview function using the "uri" attributes.
[41] FlG. 4 shows an exemplary case in which the program information content of the preview function is contained in the mediaDescription element. Program information of the preview element may be located under the "epg" element of the EPG hierarchical structure. The preview program information may be located under the program element or the programGroup element of the hierarchical structure, and may also be located under the same location equal to the mediaDescription element. A method for transmitting broadcast program information according to the present invention may transmit the preview program infomraiton in the EPG to be transmitted to the user.
[42] FIGS. 5 to 6 exemplarily show that the preview item is displayed on the EPG according to a method for transmitting/receiving broadcast program information according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[43] The EPG of FIG. 5 may indicate the preview selection item on the screen. If the user selects the "BBI"program (denoted by a bold line) to be broadcast from 19:00 clock to 20:30 clock from among the B channel, the preview selection item for the above-mentioned BBI program may be displayed on the EPG screen (for example, a lower part of the EPG in HG. 5).
[44] If the user selects the preview selection item for the BBI program, a broadcas- treceiver may display the summarized images of the BBI program on the screen as shown in FIG. 6. If the user-selected program does not include the preview selection item, the preview selection item may not be displayed on the screen, differently from the example of FIG. 6.
[45] As can be seen from FIG. 6, if the icon of the preview image is selected by the user, the preview moving images may be displayed with an image quality of 56k or 300k. The broadcast receiver and the method for transmitting/receiving the broadcast program information according to the present inventioncan display the preview element using moving images.
[46] If the user selects the preview item, the broadcast receiver can determine whether to decode the mimeType element having the mimeValue attributes contained in the EPG. The broadcast receiver receives preview files from a specific place at which the preview file is stored according to the "uri" attributes, and reproduces the preview file, such that it can display images associated with the program summarized content on the screen.
[47] If the preview schema is located at the mediaDescription element, the preview selection item is displayed in the image of FlG. 6. Therefore, the preview selection item displayed on the screen may be located at different hierarchical positions according to a variety of locations of the EPG schema.
[48] FIG. 7 is a block diagram illustrating a broadcast receiver according to an embodiment of the present invention. For the convenience of description and better understanding of the embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 7 shows an exemplary case in which the broadcast signal includes broadcast program information equipped with the preview in the Eureka 147-based DMB system, such that the resultant broadcast signal is transmitted to a destination. Therefore, the broadcast program information according to the DMB system is referred to as the EPG (Electronic Program Guide).
[49] Referring to FIG. 7, the tuner 101 performs tuning of a signal correspondingto the ensemble element from among broadcast signals including the program information, converts a frequency of the tuned signal into another frequency, and may output the resultant frequency signal.
[50] The demodulator 102 demodulates the frequency-modulated signal according to a transmission scheme, and may output a transmission frame including a synchronous channel, a Fast Information Channel (FIC), and a Main Service Channel (MSC).
[51] According to the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the DAB decoder
103 is used as a system decoder for use in a broadcast system. The DAB decoder 103 decodes the Fast Information Channel (FIC), extracts an ensemble label, a service label, and a virtual channel number, generates a channel map from the extracted map, and may store the channel map in the first storage unit 104. In this case, the ensemble label, the service label, and the virtual channel number serve as the Multiplex Configuration Information (MCI) information.
[52] The DAB decoder 103 can extract actual data by decoding the MSC information. If the extracted data is an audio signal, the audio signalis transmitted to the first audio decoder 105. If the extracted data is a data stream, the data stream can be transmitted to the error correction decoder 106.
[53] The first audio decoder 105 decodes the encoded compression-encoded audio signal such as a MUSICAM (Masking pattern adapted Universal Sub-band Integrated Coding And Multiplexing). The error correction decoder 106 corrects errors of the data stream, and outputs the resultant data stream to the MPEG-2 demultiplexer 107.
[54] The MPEG-2 demultiplexer 107 performs the transport stream depacketizing, the PES (Packetized Element Stream) depacketizing, and the SL (Sync Layer) de- packetizing on the error-corrected data stream, divides the error-corrected data stream into audio data, video data, object description data, and BIFS (Binary Format for Scenes) data, such that the audio data, the video data, the object description data, and the BIFS data can be transmitted to individual data decoders 108, 109, 110, and 111, respectively.
[55] The above-mentioned decoders 108, 109, 110, and 111 may decode the audio data, the video data, the object description data, and the BIFS data in consideration of each data format, such that it may output the resultant data. For example, the second audio decoder 108 decodes the audio signal using the BSAC (Bit Slice Arithmetic Coding) decoding algorithm, and the video decoder 109 decodes the video signal using the H.264 decoding algorithm.
[56] In the meantime, data associated with the program information is transmitted to the program information decoder 120 by the above-mentioned MSC information decoded by the DAB decoder 103. The program information decoder 120 may include the packet decoder 112, the data group decoder 113, the MOT decoder 114, the binary EPG decoder 115, and the XML EPG parser 116.
[57] The packet decoder 112 extracts data, having been transmitted by the transmission protocol, in packet units, and outputs the extracted data. The data group decoder 113 performs grouping of the output data of the packet decoder 112, and outputs the grouping resultant data. The MOT decoder 113 may configure the above- mentionedgrouping data in the form of a file format according to the Multimedia Object Transfer (MOT) algorithm, such that it may output the resultant data.
[58] The binary EPG decoder 115 performs parsing of the binary EPG syntax, such that it generates an EPG file capable of being implemented with the XML. The XML EPG parser 116 performs parsing of the XML-format EPG file, such that it can output the parsing result. The XML EPG parser 116 can parse the XML schema including the broadcast program information for the preview. The EPG engine 121 can store the parsing result of the XML EPG parser 116 in the database (DB), and can fabricate the data stored in the DB as necessary.
[59] As described above, the XML is used as an example for implementing the EPG.
Therefore, if the EPG is not implemented with the XML, the XML EPG parser 116 is used as a selective constituent element of the broadcast receiver according to the embodiment of present invention, such that there is no need for the broadcast to include the XML EPG parser 116 therein.
[60] The EPG output unit 122 acting as the program information output unit may output the EPG information, which has been stored in or fabricated by the EPG engine 121, on the screen. The preview selection item may be displayed on the screen via the EPG output unit 122. If the user selects the preview selection item for a specific program, the summarized content of the selected program is configured in the form of graphic data (e.g., moving images),such that the graphic data or moving images may be displayed on the screen as previously stated in FIGS. 5-6.
[61] FlG. 8 is a flow chart illustrating a method for receiving broadcast information according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[62] Referring to FlG. 8, the preview information which is the summarized content of the broadcast program is generated at step SIlO. The preview information is contained in the broadcast program information capable of transmitting the information associated with the broadcast program, such that the broadcast program information including the preview information is then transmitted to the user at step S 120.
[63] In the case of transmitting the broadcast program information, the preview information is located at either the program element from among several elements of the above-mentioned broadcast program information or a lower element of the pro- gramGroup element, and is encoded along with the above-mentioned broadcast program information.
[64] The preview informationmay indicate the attribute indicating a storage location of a file including the above-mentioned preview information, or may indicate a resource type of the file including the preview information.
[65] In the case of receiving the broadcast program information, the broadcast receiver receives the program information including the preview information equipped with the summarized content of the broadcast program at step S210.
[66] The broadcast receiver decodes the program information, and acquires the preview information contained in the broadcastprogram information at step S220. The acquired preview information is displayed on the screen if the user selects the preview fuction in the receiver at step S230.
[67] The preview element used as an example of the broadcast program according to the present inventionis adapted to provide the user with graphic program information. If the audio file such as an MP3 file is defined by the "url" attributes, the user who has an execution program of the audio file can audibly listen to the summarized content of the program as necessary. Mode for the Invention
[68] Various modes acccording to embodiments of the present invention are described above. Industrial Applicability
[69] The user of a broadcast receiver can preview a summarized content of a broadcast program before the user watches the broadcast program. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that embodiments of the present invention are only exemplary and various improvements, variations, alternations or additions of the embodiment can be made in the present invention without departing from the spirit or scope of the inventions.
