Description

PEDAL MECHANISM AND PEDAL, ESPECIALLY FOR MOTOR VEHICLES
The invention belongs to physics, in particular to controlling and regulating devices, which are characterised by mechanical features, especially to controlling mechanisms for foot-actuation, namely to pedals. However, such invention may also relate to transport, namely to vehicle brake systems or parts thereof, which means either to disposition of pedals or also to safety devices and monitoring.
The purpose of the invention is to create a simple and comfortable pedal mechanism of smallest possible overall dimensions together with a corresponding pedal, which should be mounted into a stationary pivot joint available in a motor vehicle, which should be adequately displaced prior to its use into adequate position depending on choice of each particular user, so that despite to said displacement of the pedal the ratio between the compression force acting towards the pedal and the force, which is consequently transmitted towards each actuated unit like e.g. brake or clutch, should remain essentially unchanged, and wherein such pedal should be displaced exclusively in the horizontal direction i.e. along the vehicle but not also in the vertical direction like e.g. by elevating thereof, while in addition to that except, of the foot pad of the pedal no other parts should protrude towards the cockpit, and also that any required security measure including with displacing the pedal apart from the cockpit in the crash situation would have to remain feasible. Numerous variations of pedals are disclosed in the prior art, by which positioning of each pedal is foreseen into a desired position, which may be selected or determined prior to use by each particular user. As known, just simple displacing of seats or performing similar measures for the purposes of adapting of the interior of the vehicles to various requirements of particular users, is quite insufficient from the ergonomic point of view. On the other hand fulfilling said condition no doubt results in feeling of each driver including his reactions and reaction time period, or also in or other consequences related to exhaustion due to long-term insisting in an undesired position, which no doubt results in common safety situation. In addition to that, various concepts of pedal also relate to security measures in the crash situation, especially by preventing the pedal from being pushed by corresponding booster towards the cockpit, which could then result in serious damage of the legs of the driver.
An adjustable pedal according to US 5,351,573 is mounted in a stationary pivot joint and is at the same time connected with the actuating rod of the buster i.e. a pressure generating unit of a brake system via an appropriate supporting member, on which said pedal is rest in the area between said pivot joint and a foot pad. Position of said supporting member may be adjusted, by which however a predetermined position of the pedal is changed. Although such solution appears to be really simple, several deficiencies may arise therefrom. By amending position of said supporting element the loading conditions are also changed, which among others results in changing of the ratio between the compression force, which is acting towards the pedal, and the transmitted force, which is acting towards the booster rod, which obviously depends on each particular position of said supporting member. In addition to that, any displacement of said pedal in the horizontal direction is unavoidable connected with a corresponding displacement in the vertical direction, which is however not desired. Besides, said supporting member, on which said pedal is supported by means of appropriate pivot joint, is directly connected with said booster rod, so that in crash situation the pedal then is pushed towards the cockpit, which is however also not desired.
A further pedal according to US 6,301,993 is also pivotably mounted into appropriate pivot joint and supported by appropriate supporting member, which is available in a vertical guide member, by which at the same time said pivot joint is movable along said vertical guide member. As soon as the pivot joint is displaced downwards along said guide member, the pedal is displaced not only in the horizontal direction towards the driver but also downwards in the vertical direction, which is however not desired. In addition to that, also in this case the loading conditions may essentially vary due to displacement of pedal, in particular the ratio between the compression force towards the pedal and the transmitted force towards the booster rod.
In order to avoid said variations in loading conditions by adjusting each pedal position, a pedal is proposed in EP 1 365 303 Al, which is attached to a pivot joint arranged on appropriate lever, which is inserted by means of adequate bolts into elongated bores in the pedal and may therefore be displaced along said pedal. Said lever is pivotably connected with an actuating lever, which is also furnished with an elongated bore, in which a further bolt is inserted, which is placed on said pedal and firmly connected herewith, while at the same time a booster rood of a brake system is pivotably attached to said actuating lever in the area of an appropriate pivot joint. Such approach results in a benefit, that the distance between said pivot joints remains permanently unchanged, by which also the loading conditions, namely the ratio between the compression force towards the pedal and the transmitted force towards the booster rod, remain unchanged. Unfortunately, any displacement of said pedal in the horizontal direction is unavoidable connected with adequate displacement of the foot pad of said pedal in the vertical direction, which is however not desired.
In order to avoid such undesired movement of the pedal in the vertical direction by displacing thereof in the horizontal direction, US 6,289,761 Bl proposes a pedal mechanism, in which the pedal together with the belonging lever is attached into appropriate pivot joint, by which the arm of said lever extends along the pedal and is approximately in the middle area of said pedal pivotably attached thereto. Said lever is moreover furnished with an elongated bore, to which a bolt is inserted, which is on the one hand pivotably attached to said pedal, and on the other hand connected to a driving means, which is preferably powered by appropriate motor and by which each desired origin position of such pedal is then determined. Such pedal may then be displaced in the horizontal direction without any essential displacement in the vertical direction, by which however the ratio between the compression force towards the pedal and the transmitted force towards the booster of the brake system is unavoidable changed. In addition to that, such mechanism is quite bulky with respect to overall dimensions and moreover includes parts, which unavoidable protrude towards the cockpit, which may even during quite regular use and not only in a crash situation be very dangerous and may seriously jeopardize the safety of the driver.
The present invention refers to a pedal mechanism, which consists of a base member with a pivot joint and a pedal, which is equipped with a foot pad and is at the one hand pivotably mounted into said pivot joint and on the other hand connected with a corresponding actuated means. Such mechanism according to the invention comprises a pedal, which consists of a pedal lever, an actuating lever and a cam lever, wherein said actuating lever is pivotably connected with the base member by means of said pivot joint and includes a longitudinal guide, which forms a translational pivot joint, in which to said actuating lever the pedal lever is pivotably connected, which is equipped with a stationary pivot joint, in which to said pedal lever the cam lever is pivotably connected, which is by means of a further stationary pivot joint pivotably connected with the actuating lever, and wherein each desired arrangement and mutual position of said levers of the pedal is then adjustable by means of a corresponding adjusting assembly. Said pivot joints are arranged on the belonging levers in the following relationship clb = bla, wherein a is a distance between the origin of the compression force on the foot pad
211 of the pedal lever 21 and the pivot joint 210, in which the pedal lever
21 and the cam lever 23 are interconnected; b is a distance between the aforementioned pivot joint 210 of the pedal lever
21 and cam lever 23, and each corresponding position of the translational pivot joint 220, in which said pedal lever 21 and actuating lever 22 of the pedal 2 are interconnected; while c is a distance between the stationary pivot joints 210 and 230, i.e. the pivot joint 210 of the pedal lever 21 and cam lever 23, and the pivot joint 230 of the cam lever 23 and actuating lever 22.
Furthermore, such pedal mechanism is characterized in that each actuated means is pivotably connected with the actuating lever of the pedal by means of a belonging joint element. The translational pivot joint is formed by a guide, which is available on the actuating lever and extends in the longitudinal direction thereof, as well as by a bolt, which is inserted therein and is moreover adapted to establish interconnection between the actuating lever and the pedal lever. Said bolt is either adapted to slide along said guide or may also be equipped with a roller means, which then enables rolling thereof along the guide. Moreover, said bolt is also adapted to co-operate with a positioning member of the positioning assembly in such a manner, that displacement thereof with respect to each other may optionally be either enabled or disabled, by which consequently adequate possibility of displacing and fixation of levers of the pedal in a desired position is obtained. In this, said positioning member is preferably extended throughout said bolt. In addition to that, said positioning member is placed on the carrier, which is firmly connected with the actuating lever of the pedal.
A further aspect of the invention represents a pedal, especially a pedal for actuating of brake or clutch assembly in a motor vehicle, wherein said pedal comprises a foot pad and is intended on the one hand to be mounted into appropriate pivot joint and on the other hand to be connected with a corresponding actuated means of each desired actuated. unit. Pedal according to the invention consists of a pedal lever, an actuating lever and a cam lever, wherein said actuating lever is pivotably connected with the base member by means of said pivot joint and includes a longitudinal guide, which forms a translational pivot joint, in which to said actuating lever the pedal lever is pivotably connected, which is equipped with a stationary pivot joint, in which to said pedal lever the cam lever is pivotably connected, which is by means of a further stationary pivot joint pivotably connected with the actuating lever, and wherein each desired arrangement and mutual position of said levers of the pedal is adjustable by means of a corresponding adjusting assembly.
Said translational pivot joint is formed by a guide, which is available on the actuating lever and extends in the longitudinal direction thereof, as well as by a bolt, which is inserted therein and is moreover adapted to establish interconnection between the actuating lever and the pedal lever. Besides, said bolt is either adapted to slide along the guide or may also be equipped with appropriate roller means, which enable rolling thereof along the guide. Still further, said bolt is adapted to co-operate with a positioning member of the positioning assembly in such a manner, that displacement thereof with respect to each other may optionally be either enabled or disabled, by which consequently adequate possibility of displacing and fixation of levers of the pedal in a desired position is obtained. In this, said positioning member is preferably extended throughout said bolt and said positioning member is preferably placed on the carrier, which is firmly connected with the actuating lever of the pedal. Said pedal lever is equipped with a foot pad on its free end portion, while on the opposite end portion thereof a bore is foreseen, which is adapted to receipt a bolt and to form herewith a translational pivot joint between said pedal lever and the actuating lever, while in the central area of said lever another bore is foreseen, which is adapted to receive a further bolt and to form herewith a stationary pivot joint between the pedal lever and the cam lever. Said actuating lever is equipped on its one end portion with a bore, which is adapted to receive a bolt and to form herewith a pivot joint and moreover to connect said actuating lever and herewith also the pedal to each corresponding base member of the pedal, while on its opposite end portion another bore is arranged, which is adapted to receive a bolt and to form herewith a stationary pivot joint for the purposes of establishing a connection between said actuating lever and the cam lever, while in the central area thereof a guide in form of an elongated bore is available, which is adapted to receive a bolt and to form herewith a translational pivot joint, in which the actuating lever is connected with the pedal lever. Still further, said cam lever is conceived as appropriately rigid linear element, which is furnished with a bore on each end portion thereof, each of them being adapted to receive a corresponding bolt, through which then corresponding stationary pivot joints are formed for the purposes of connecting said cam lever with the pedal lever on the one hand and with the actuating lever on the other hand.
The invention will now be explained in more detail on the basis of an embodiment, which is shown in the enclosed drawing, in which
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pedal mechanism and a corresponding pedal; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of mechanism, shown from the opposite direction; Fig. 3 is an explosion view of said pedal mechanism; Fig. 4 is a schematic presentation of mechanism in two various positions thereof; Fig. 5 is a side view of said pedal and the belonging mechanism; and Fig. 6 is a schematic presentation of three various stages of positioning said pedal into each desired position thereof.
Pedal mechanism according to the invention comprises a pedal 2, which is connected with each corresponding actuated means 3 and attached in appropriate manner via a stationary pivot joint 10 to a base member 1, by which a desired position thereof is optionally adjusted by means of appropriate positioning assembly 4.
For the purposes of better understanding of the object of the invention it should be first of all explained, that the phrase "stationary pivot joint" means a location, in which two elements are pivotably connected to each other in such a manner, that rotation of at least one of them relatively with respect to another is then enabled, while the phrase "movable pivot joint" means such location, in which two elements are pivotably connected to each other, so that said elements may then be rotated and/or displaced in a translational direction relatively each to other and are in the case of e.g. translational movable pivot joint correspondingly movable in a translational manner.
Said base member 1 is adapted for the purposes of mounting of a complete mechanism together with said pedal 2 into each corresponding place within a motor vehicle or any other device, where the of pedal 2 according to the invention is intended to be used. In the shown embodiment the base member 1 consists of a mounting plate 11, which is equipped with mounting bores 12 and also with an appropriate passage 13 for the purposes of enabling access to each corresponding actuated means 3, by which said plate 11 is furthermore furnished with a stationary joint member 14, which forms a stationary pivot joint 10, to which said pedal 2 is pivotably attached by means of appropriate bolt 15.
The pedal 2 as such consists of a pedal lever 21, an actuating lever 22 and a cam lever 23, wherein said actuating lever 22 is pivotably connected at the one hand in the area of a stationary pivot joint 10 with the base member 1 and on the other hand with each corresponding actuated means 3, which will be subsequently explained in more detail, and wherein the pedal 2 is pivotably connected with said actuating lever 22 in two locations, namely at the one hand directly in the area of a translational pivot joint 220, which is arranged adjacent to said stationary pivot joint 10, and on the other hand indirectly via said cam lever 23, which is in the area of stationary pivot joint 210 pivotably connected with the pedal lever 21 and on the other hand in the area of a stationary pivot joint 230 with the actuating lever 22.
Said pedal lever 21 (Fig. 3) of the pedal 2 is furnished with a foot pad 211, which is placed on the free end portion 21' thereof, while on the opposite end portion 21" thereof a bore 2101 is foreseen, which is adapted to receive a bolt 2102 and forming herewith a movable pivot joint, while in appropriate position in the central area 21'" thereof a further bore 2103 is foreseen, which is adapted to receive a bolt 2104 and forming herewith a stationary pivot joint 210.
As already mentioned, said actuating lever 22 of the pedal 2 is pivotably attached to the base member 1 in the area of said stationary pivot joint 10 and is for such purposes equipped with appropriate bore 2201 located on the one end portion 22' thereof, while on the opposite end portion 22" another bore 2203 is foreseen, which is adapted to receive a bolt 2204 and to form herewith a stationary pivot joint 230 of both actuating lever 22 and cam lever 23 of the pedal 2. In addition to that, a guide 221 in form of an elongated bore is foreseen in a corresponding location 22"' on the actuating lever 22, which extends in the longitudinal direction of said actuating lever 22 between previously mentioned bores 2201, 2203 i.e. between said pivot joints 10, 230. Appropriate translational pivot joint 220 is formed within said guide 211 by means of a bolt e.g. a slider 2102, in which said pedal lever 21 is connected with the actuating lever 22. Said cam lever 23 is adequately rigid and is available in form of a preferably linearly conceived connecting element, which is equipped with appropriate bores 231, 232 located on each corresponding end portion thereof and adapted to receive bolts 2104, 2204 in order to establish stationary pivot joints 210, 230 for connecting said actuating lever 22 and pedal lever 21.
Said actuated means 3 may generally be any desired device, which is actuated by means of said pedal 2 or mechanism according to the invention. Which is important for the purposes of this invention, is that said means 3, which is by the way just partially shown in the enclosed drawings, includes a corresponding joint element 30, which is adapted for establishing appropriate interconnection with said pedal 2 of the mechanism according to the invention. In the shown embodiment according to Figs 1 to 6 said joint element 30 is a compression shaft of a not- shown booster, which belongs to a hydraulic brake system of a motor vehicle. In the shown embodiment said joint element 30 includes appropriate eye 31, through which a bolt 32 is inserted, by means of which then the element 30 is pivotably connected with the pedal 2, namely with the actuating lever 22 of said pedal 2.
Said positioning assembly 4 of the pedal according to the invention is intended to enable adjusting of each desired position i.e. a pre-determined origin of the pedal 2. In the shown embodiment the approach is extremely simplified by means of positioning member 41, which is adapted to co-operate with said slider i.e. bolt 2102 of the movable pivot joint 220, wherein said slider 2102 is movable along said positioning member 41, which is supported by adequate carrier 42 and attached to the actuating lever 22 of the pedal 2. To this aim, said positioning member 41 is e.g. equipped with a threaded body, which is adapted to co-operate with adequate threaded bore within said bolt 2102, upon which any movement of bolt 2102 by means of said positioning member 41 results in changing of mutual arrangement and position of levers 21, 22, 23 of the pedal 2 together with the foot pad 211, which is however displaced exclusively in its horizontal bur not also in its vertical direction.
Said pedal 2 as such therefore consists of a pedal lever 21, an actuating lever 22 and a cam lever 23, wherein said actuating lever 22 is pivotably connected on the one hand in the area of a stationary pivot joint 10 with the base member 1 and on the other hand with each corresponding actuated means 3, and wherein the pedal 2 is pivotably connected with said actuating lever 22 in two locations, namely on the one hand directly in the area of a translational pivot joint 220 arranged adjacent to said stationary pivot joint 10, and on the other hand indirectly via said cam lever 23, which is in the area of stationary pivot joint 210 pivotably connected with the pedal lever 21 and on the other hand in the area of a stationary pivot joint 230 with the actuating lever 22.
In this, said pivot joints 210, 220, 230 are arranged on the belonging levers 21, 22, 23 in the following relationship (Fig. 5)
clb = bla, wherein a is a distance between the origin of the compression force on the foot pad
Translational pivot joint 220, which essentially consists of a slider i.e. bolt 2102 and a guide 221, is generally available either as a sliding or a rolling assembly. When said rolling concept is used, said bolt or slider 2102 includes a supplemental roller member, which is not shown in the drawing, and may e.g. be freely movable along said guide 221.
Adjustment and operation of said pedal mechanism and said pedal 2 as such will be explained in more detail on the basis of schematic presentations according to Figs 4 to 6.
The pedal 2, which is actually conceived as an assembly or mechanism, which consists of mutually in a pivotable manner interconnected levers 21, 22, 23, may be rotated around its pivot joint 10, while it is pivotably connected with corresponding joint element 30 of each available actuated means 3 like e.g. brake or clutch assembly of a motor vehicle. Said pedal 2 is shown in Fig. 4 in two drawings, however each time in its original position, although the levers 21, 22, 23 are arranged in two different manners, which results in adequate displacement of the foot pad 211 in the horizontal direction. In the picture on the right side, for example, the pedal lever 21 is arranged at a different angle with respect to the actuating lever 22, so that the translational pivot joint 220 is displaced downwards and the cam lever 23 is rotated at a corresponding angle φ, which then consequently results in corresponding displacement of the foot pad 211 for a distance L in the horizontal direction (i.e. from the point A to the point A' according to Fig. 5) i.e. towards the manipulating area of the driver.
As soon as the base member 1 is installed into a desired vehicle or any other appliance, where the pedal mechanism or pedal 2 according to the invention is to be used, said pedal 2 is connected with appropriate actuated means 3 and may be pivoted around its pivot joint 10. Pre-adjusting of each desired position of the foot pad 211 of said pedal 2 is then performed by means of the positioning assembly 4, namely by displacing od said bolt 2102 along the belonging guide 221 on the actuating lever 22 of the pedal 2.
As soon as a desired position of the foot pad 211 is achieved by means of a corresponding rotation of the cam lever 23 and corresponding displacement of the foot pad 211, of said bolt 2102 is prevented from any further displacements along said guide 221 by means of appropriately blocking of the adjusting assembly 4. Upon that, such pedal mechanism i.e. such assembly of levers 21, 22, 23 acts as a rigid formation, which operates in an equal manner like any other pedal, enabling thereby appropriate control of each desired actuated means 3 by pivoting thereof around the pivot joint 10. Any security measures, which may be foreseen due to possibility of being exposed to crash of a vehicle, may also be applied when pedal mechanism according to the invention is installed. In this relationship it may e.g. be foreseen, that in the crash situation said bolt 2102 of the translational pivot joint 220 is displaced upwards, which then results in displacement of the pedal lever 21 together with the foot pad 211 in a direction away from the legs of the driver. Such a measure may e.g. be realized in a pretty simple and reliable manner, where the actuated means 3 is connected with a not shown member equipped with an inclined surface, which is then by displacement of said means 3 in a crash situation pressed below said bolt 2102.
