Abstract

A urine collection system includes a urine collection device and a support system. The urine collection device includes a catheter and collection component. The suspension system includes a waist band, an extension strap depending from the waist band, and a thigh band attached to the strap. A pair of securing straps is provided for securing the urine collection tubing. A fastener is provided on the extension strap for securing the catheter and for resisting movement of the catheter due to relative pulling of collection tubing or a collection bag. The catheter further includes a branch, which, along with the fastener, resists the downward motion of the catheter.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 23 January 2008 (23.01.2008)
1. A urine bag suspension system for carrying a urine collection device including a catheter and a urine bag, the catheter having a branch depending therefrom and an engaging end removably engaging the urine bag, the urine bag suspension system comprising: a waist band; a urine bag support suspended from the waist band for carrying the urine bag; and a fastener disposed at the urine bag support for fastening the engaging end of the catheter to the urine bag support, wherein the fastener engages the catheter below the branch in the catheter without securing the catheter, to resist downward movement of the catheter.
2. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 1 , wherein the fastener maintains the engaging end of the catheter in place when the engaging end disengages from the urine bag.
3. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 1 , wherein the urine bag support is configured so that the engaging end of the catheter extends in a direction substantially vertical to the waist band when the urine bag is carried by the urine bag support.
4. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 1, wherein the urine bag support comprises an extension strap and a thigh band attached to the extension strap.
5. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 4, wherein the extension strap is substantially vertically suspended from the waist band.
6. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 4, wherein the extension strap is made of a non-stretchable material.
7. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 4, wherein the fastener is provided at the extension strap.
8. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 4, wherein the thigh band is provided adjacent to the fastener.
9. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 4, wherein the thigh band includes a pair of strips extending in opposite directions.
10. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 1, wherein the urine bag support further comprises a panel for separating the urine bag from a thigh of a patient.
11. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 1 , wherein the waist band includes a fastener for attaching the waist band onto a piece of clothing of a user.
12. A urine bag suspension system for carrying a urine collection device including a catheter and a urine bag, the catheter having a branch depending therefrom and an engaging end removably engaging the urine bag, the system comprising: a waist band; an extension strap suspended from the waist band; and a bag carrier for carrying the urine bag, the bag carrier including an upper edge, a fastener disposed at the urine bag support for fastening the engaging end of the catheter to the urine bag support, wherein the fastener engages the catheter below the branch in the catheter without securing the catheter, to resist downward movement of the catheter; and
AMENDED SHEET (ARTICLE 19)
19 wherein the extension strap is substantially vertically suspended from the waist band and is connected to about the midway of an upper edge of the bag carrier.
13. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 12, further comprising a thigh band adjacent to the upper edge of the bag carrier.
14. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 12, further comprising a fastener for fastening the engaging end of the catheter to the extension strap.
15. The urine bag suspension system according to Claim 12, wherein the bag carrier includes a pair of securing straps for securing the urine bag.
16. A urine catheter support system for carrying a catheter having a branch depending therefrom, and an engaging end removably engaging a length of tubing, the system comprising: a waist band configured to be secured to a patient's waist; an extension strap suspended from the waist band; at least two securing straps disposed on the extension strap in a spaced apart manner, for securing the catheter below the branch without securing said branch, to resist downward movement of the catheter relative to the extension strap; a thigh band adjacent to the suspended end of the extension strap, the thigh band being configured to secure the suspended end of the extension strap to a patient's thigh; a lower panel depending from the extension strap; at least two securing straps disposed on the lower panel in a spaced apart manner, for securing a length of tubing that is engaged with an end of the catheter to the lower panel;
AMENDED SHEET (ARTICLE 19)
20 wherein the at least two securing straps disposed on the lower panel restrict movement of the urine-carrying tubing relative to the extension strap to resist movement of the catheter engaging the length of urine-carrying tubing.
17. A wearable support for a urine collection catheter comprising a catheter engagingly receiving a length of collection tubing, which catheter includes a branch depending therefrom4 the support comprising: a waist band adapted to be worn around the user's waist, an extension strap depending from the waist band, a thigh band attached to the extension strap, adapted to be worn around the user's thigh, at least one fastener on the extension strap for engaging a portion of the catheter below the branch without securing said branch4 to resist downward movement of the catheter relative to the extension strap, and at least one fastener on the lower end portion of the extension strap for engaging and securing a portion of collection tubing to resist movement of the collection tubing such that movement of the catheter relative to the extension strap is resisted.
18. The wearable support according to Claim 17, wherein the catheter has a branch, and wherein the fastener on the strap engages the catheter below the branch to resist downward motion of the catheter.
19. The wearable support according to Claim 17, wherein the at least one fastener on the lower end portion of the extension strap supports the collection tubing in a manner that resists movement of the secured portion of tubing and the catheter relative to the extension strap when an unsecured portion of the collection tubing is being pulled.
20. The wearable support according to Claim 17, wherein the thigh band supports the extension strap in a manner that resists movement of the extension strap relative to the patient when an unsecured portion of the collection tubing is being pulled.
