Description

PIPE JOINTS
THIS INVENTION relates to pipe joints. More particularly, this invention relates to a gasket, a gasket insertion tool, a gasket insertion arrangement and a method of inserting a gasket.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to the making of flanged pipe joints. In such a joint a gasket is used to seal off the space between flanges bolted together by a number of bolts spaced around the outside of the pipes. It is important to place such a gasket accurately in position to ensure a good leak proof joint. This is complicated by the fact that divers inserting such gaskets sometimes have to work in low or no visibility conditions. In addition, the tug of currents on adjacent pipeline sections increases the risk of limb or finger loss when inserting gaskets between such sections.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a gasket shaped and dimensioned to fit within an inner periphery of holding bolts of mating flanges of a bolted flanged pipe joint, the gasket having a pair of spaced seats at a spacing to match the spacing between a pair of spaced bolts holding the joint flanges, the seats in use seating on a pair of spaced flange holding bolts and locating the gasket in position between and co-axial with the flanges of the joint.
The seats of the gasket may be in the form of shoulders spaced apart by a distance corresponding to the spacing between two locating bolts. The gasket may include a handle which, in use, will project outwardly from between the flanges of the joint, the handle having a stem which is sufficiently narrow to pass with little or no interference between adjacent bolts in the flanges when the seats are seated on their supporting bolts. The handle may be placed relative to the seats of the gasket (e.g. symmetrically between them) to ensure that, in use, it lies with little or no interference between adjacent bolts, when the gasket is in its desired located position between the flanges of the joint.
The stem of the handle may have a zone of weakness to permit its outer end to be broken off once the gasket has been located in position between the flanges of the joint.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a gasket insertion tool which includes a gasket holding formation for holding a gasket in position; and a pair of spaced seats on the gasket holding formation, the pair of spaced seats at a spacing to match the spacing between a pair of spaced bolts holding joint flanges of a bolted flanged pipe joint, the seats being shaped to seat, in use, on a pair of spaced flange holding bolts and locating the gasket held by the gasket holding formation in position between and co-axial with the flanges of the joint.
The seats of the gasket insertion tool may be in the form of shoulders spaced apart by a distance corresponding to the spacing between two locating bolts.
The gasket insertion tool may likewise include a handle which, in use, will project outwardly from between the flanges of the joint, the handle having a stem which is sufficiently narrow to pass with little or no interference between adjacent bolts in the flanges. The handle if the gasket insertion tool may likewise be placed relative to the seats of the gasket insertion tool to ensure that, in use, it lies with little or no interference between adjacent bolts, when the gasket insertion tool is in its desired located position between the flanges of the joint. The gasket insertion tool handle stem may have a zone of weakness to permit its outer end to be broken off once the gasket insertion tool has been located in position between the flanges of the joint.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a gasket insertion arrangement, which includes: a gasket insertion tool as described ; and a gasket secured in position in the gasket holding formation of the gasket insertion tool.
The gasket may be of a resiliency compressible material. In particular, the gasket may be in the form of an O-ring. Typically, the gasket used in combination with the gasket insertion tool may have a thickness greater than the gasket insertion tool, so that the gasket has surfaces standing proud of the surfaces of the gasket insertion tool.
The invention extends to a method of locating a gasket, as described above, between flanges of two flanged pipes, the method including positioning the seats of the gasket on at least two bolts passing through holes in the two flanged ends of a bolted flanged pipe joint so that the spaced seats of the gasket engage the bolts thereby to locate the gasket in an axial alignment with flanges of the flanged pipes.
The invention extends further to a method of locating a gasket of a gasket insertion arrangement, as described above, between flanges of two flanged pipes, the method including positioning the seats of the gasket insertion tool on at least two bolts passing through holes in the two flanged ends of a bolted flanged pipe joint so that the spaced seats of the gasket insertion tool engage the bolts thereby to locate the insertion gasket insertion tool and the gasket held in position in the gasket holding formation in an axial alignment with the flanges of the flanged pipes.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the follow diagrammatic drawings.

EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a gasket in accordance with the invention generally indicated by reference numeral 10. The gasket is of a gasket material and has a pair of spaced shoulders or seats 12 at a spacing 14 to match the spacing 16 between a pair of bolts whose centre lines are spaced as shown by 16.1 . The gasket 10 has a handle 18 having a narrow stem 18.1 for passing without interference between bolts in holes 20, 22 (shown in broken line) when in position in a flanged pipe joint. The stem 18.1 has a zone of weakness 18.2, permitting the handle 18 to be broken off after installation.
Referring now to Figure 2 of the drawings, there is shown a gasket insertion tool 30 in accordance with the invention. It is made of a thin, but stiff, material which will not prejudice cathodic protection of the pipeline. In practice, the gasket insertion tool 30 can be made of aluminium sheet, say of 16 gauge. It has shoulders or seats 32 similar to the seats 12 of the gasket 10. The shape of the seats 32 and their spacing will depend, as for the gasket 10, on the sizes of the flange holding bolts and their spacing. The gasket insertion tool 30 has a handle 1 18 at the end of a narrow stem 1 18.1 passing without interference between bolts in flange holes 20, 22 (shown in broken line). The stem 1 18.1 has a zone of weakness 118.2 permitting the handle 1 18 to be broken off after use. The gasket insertion tool 30 further has a gasket-holding formation 34, in the form of teeth or serrations 34.1 engageable with a gasket such as an O-ring seal.
Referring to Figure 3 of the drawings, there is shown a gasket insertion arrangement 130 in accordance with the invention. It comprises the gasket insertion tool 30 of Figure 2, and an O-ring seal 40, held by the serrations 34.1 (not visible in Figure 3) of the gasket insertion tool. The serrations 34.1 have been sunk into the O- ring seal 40, which is of a compressible material.
Referring now to Figures 4, 5, and 6 of the drawings, the gasket insertion arrangement 130 is shown in position between a pair of mating pipe flanges 132. The pair of flanges 132 have registering holes with centerlines spaced circumferentially on a pitch circle 132.1 for receiving holding bolts (not shown).
It will be noted that the outer surfaces 40.1 and 40.2 of the gasket 40 stand proud of the outer surfaces 30.1 and 30.2 of the gasket insertion tool (see Figure 6).
An arrangement 130 can be made so that when the seats 32 are in position between the flanges of a pipe joint, not only is the stem 1 18.1 out of interference with the bolts in holes 20, 22, and in other holes having centerlines 132.1 , but the O-ring seal
40 is also in register with opposing grooves 134.1 in the faces 134 of the flanges 132
(see Figure 5).
The applicant believes that the seats 32 serve in positively locating a gasket insertion arrangement 130 in position between a pair of pipe joint flanges 132. They ensure also that the stem is always in a position of non-interference with the bolts in holes 20, 22 and in holes having centerlines 132.1 .
The features make this assembly particularly useful in making flanged pipe joints under arduous conditions in semi- or total darkness underwater or elsewhere. Thus, workers, in making a pipe joint, need not insert their fingers between the flanges in order to place the assembly 130 correctly in alignment with the flanges. The assembly 130 functions in jig or template fashion, to ensure the accurate placement of the O-ring seal 40 and the stem 118.1 .
The description thus illustrates also a method of locating a gasket or O-ring gasket being held in position in a gasket insertion tool between flanges of two flanged pipes. The user merely position the seats of the gasket/gasket insertion tool on at least two bolts passing through holes in the two flanged ends of a bolted flanged pipe joint so that the spaced seats of the gasket engage the bolts thereby to locate the gasket in an axial alignment with flanges of the flanged pipes.
The inventor believes that the invention as illustrated will reduce the risk to users of inserting gaskets between flanged pipe joints.
