Abstract

A carrier is provided with vertical support panels (23, 25, 194, 196, 423, 425), each with a receptacle (24, 26, 204, 206, 42, 249) extending outwardly from its lower region. In one embodiment, each receptacle has a top shelf (52, 53, 220, 224) with at least one opening (56, 58, 60, 62, 226, 228) to receive and provide extra support for beverage cups (54) or other items such as ice cream cones, confection cups, etc. The top shelf panel is held in position either by tabs (145, 154, 148, 152) which fit into slots (142, 144, 146, 150), or by vertical support panels, or by other structures. The carrier is easily convertible to one having only one ' top shelf, or none, as needed. Each receptacle has a bottom structure (450, 452) with a bottom panel (464, 470) which automatically unfolds partially when the folded carrier is unfolded. An engagement structure such as a detent comprised of tabs (466, 467, 472, 473) and slots (474, 476, 478, 477) is provided to hold each bottom panel (464, 470) temporarily in the partially unfolded position to hold the receptacles open until the bottom panels are pressed downwardly by an object placed in the receptacle.
