Description
A pair of core plugs
The present invention relates to a pair of core plugs, especially for use in tubular cores for simultaneous winding of two or more adjacent sheet materials. Background
It is well known in the prior art to provide continuous sheets of material, such as paper, polyethylene, and the like, in the form of tubular rolls having a central tubular core. There are a number of core plugs for such rolls which are engaged and retained in the roll to protect the end of the material from damage and to prevent the core from collapsing during transport and handling by the end user. The core plugs are inserted into the ends of the rolls after winding of the sheet material. When in place, the end of the core plug facing the outside of the core, does not protrude beyond the plane of the circular edge of the core. The core plugs usually have a centric hole to facilitate their removal by use of a suitable tool. There are also disclosed in the prior art core plugs with a hole closer to the periphery of the substantially tubular plug body, see e.g. US patent No. 4,547,417.
In the paper manufacturing, the final step of the process is length-wise slitting the finished paper web, having the width of the running machine, into desired widths and winding the in parallel running webs of paper onto adjacent tubular rigid cores. The winding is usually made with so-called two-drum winders that are used for simultaneous winding of all the in parallel running webs onto the tubular cores. The longitudinal consecutive cores are locked in place to form a core line by means of some kind of a core locking device placed at both ends of the line, which device is movable when the diameter of the paper roll increases as its centre is displaced. There is no central shaft keeping the cores of the winding rolls in line in such two-drum winders. A disadvantage of the loose adjacent rolls in the line is that a roll may be bouncing or rocking back and forth from drum to drum, thus drifting out from the rotation axis during winding and resulting in a non-concentric positioning of the core in the roil of material. Rolls with non-centred cores may cause wobbling and other running problems in the converting of the rolls into finished products as well as quality problems such as creases in the finished products.
Short description of the invention
The present invention provides a solution to the above-mentioned bouncing problem by providing a pair of interlocking core plugs to be mounted in the ends of tubular cores prior to placing the cores in line on a two-drum winder. When the ends of two cores are positioned with the two different core plugs facing and interlocking each other, the unsecured cores and rolls are kept in place during winding in the two-drum winder. Thus, one of the core plugs is inserted in one end of a tubular core and has at least one recess or grove. The other core
plug of the pair is inserted into another tubular core and has at least one projection or boss. When the two core plugs of a pair are thus inserted into their respective tubular core and are brought together, their recess(es) and projection(s) match and mate so that the consecutive two tubular cores will be close to each other and interlocked in line. By providing two or more tubular cores, each having one core plug of the invention in one end and the other core plug of the pair of the invention in the other end, it is possible to provide a line of a desired number of consecutive tubular cores that are interlocked, thereby facilitating an even winding of sheet material on a two-drum winder and improved runability in the converting of the paper rolls into finished products. Still another benefit of the invention is that a more even and non- vibrating operation of the winder is achieved, which in turn permits an increased winding speed and improved productivity.

Detailed description of the invention
The present invention provides a pair of core plugs for reinforcing the ends of tubular cores and interlocking two longitudinally adjacent cores, each core plug comprising a cylindrical body portion that fits tightly into the end of a core and an integral, tapered portion for facilitating entry of the core plug into an end of the core and an opening through the core plug for facilitating removal of the plug from the core, wherein, in one of the core plugs of the pair, the end area of the cylindrical body portion has at least one recess at a distance from its outer periphery, and, in the other core plug of the pair, the end area of the cylindrical body portion has at least one projection at a distance from its outer periphery, so that two longitudinally adjacent tubular cores are interlocked by said pair of core plugs by means of said at least one recess and said at least one projection.
The plug material should be strong and relatively rigid. Therefore, the plugs are preferably made from wood material, such as solid wood or sawdust and binder, metal, plastic or composite material. The composite material preferably contains cellulosic fibers, such as free fibers or sawdust, and a plastic. In particular, when utilizing a thermoplastic material such as polyethylene for the manufacture of such plugs, it may be advantageous to include some enforcement parts to keep the sides of a partly hollow plug body in tight engagement with the tubular core.
The cylindrical body portion that fits tightly into the end of a core and/or the integral, tapered portion thereof may have rims or other protruding parts that presses the plug tightly into the inner wall of the tubular core. However, a core of celluiosic material is somewhat yielding so that a core plug body of just a little larger diameter than the inner diameter of the tubular core can be inserted into an end of the core without affecting the outer diameter of the core. A core plug that has been forces into a core will stay in place during rotation/winding, transport and handling.
In an embodiment of a pair of core plugs according to the invention, the one core plug has one circular concentric recess and the other core plug has one circular concentric projection.
In another embodiment of a pair of core plugs according to the invention, the one core plug has at least two circular concentric recesses and the other core plug has at least two circular concentric projections.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, each core plug has a diameter in the range of 30 to 400 millimeters and each recess has a width of 2 - 30 millimeters and has a depth of 2 - 10 millimeters, and each projection has a width of 2 - 30 millimeters and a height of 2 - 10 millimeters.
In a presently most preferred embodiment, the diameter of each core plug is 70 - 310 mm and the width of each recess is 8 - 15 mm and its depth is 2 - 6 mm, and the width of each projection is 7,9 - 14,9 mm and its height is 1 ,9 - 5,9 mm.
In a further embodiment of the pair of core plugs according to the invention, the one recess is a gear-shaped recess and the projection is a matching gear-shaped projection.
In still another embodiment, the recesses are several discrete recesses and the projections are several discrete projections which match the recesses.
All of the embodiments of a pair of core plugs according to the invention may be varied so that each recess is tapered inwards and each projection is tapered outwards from the body end area of respective plug.
Each core plug has an opening through the plug for facilitating removal of the plug from the core, and in a preferred embodiment the opening is circular and is in the center of the core plug. However, the opening or hole need not be circular or tubular for the purpose of facilitating removal of the plug, it may be of any form that can facilitate removal with an appropriate tool.
The opening or hole may also be at a distance from the center of the plug end area. In a preferred embodiment of the core plug of the invention, the opening has a diameter of 20- 80 millimeters.
The invention will now be further illustrated by reference to the drawings, but it should be understood that the scope of the invention is defined by the claims and is not limited to the shown embodiments. .
The drawings show examples of pairs of core plugs according to the invention. These are adapted for mounting in the opposite ends of tubular cores, prior to use of at least two tubular cores for winding of sheet material on a two-drum winder. In Figure 1 , a pair of core plugs designated generally by the reference numeral 10 and 10', are shown in cross-section. A concentric projection 12 and a matching recess 12' are shown as well as tapered cylindrical body portions 15 and 15'. In case the body portions are not solid, the bodies may be strengthened by reinforcing tongues of material 13 and 13'.
Figure 2 shows a sectional view of two adjacent rolls of sheet material 26 and 26', their tubular cores 22 and 22', and inserted into the adjacent core ends a core plug 24 and 24', respectively. The core plugs 24 and 24' form a pair of plugs according to the invention, and the plugs are in an interlocking, mating engagement with each other.
Figure 3 shows an embodiment of a pair of core plugs wherein the end area of the cylindrical body portion of one core plug has one circular concentric projection 32 at a distance from its outer periphery, and, the end area of the cylindrical body portion of the other core plug has one circular concentric recess 32' at a distance from its outer periphery.
O
When these two core plugs are put together, the projection 32 and the recess 32' match and interlock the core plugs.
Figure 4 shows an embodiment of a pair of core plugs with several discrete projections 42 and several discrete recesses 42' on respective plug end area. When these two core plugs are put together, the projections 42 and the recesses 42' match and interlock the core plugs.
Figure 5 shows an embodiment of a pair of core plugs with two circular concentric projections 52, 54 and two circular concentric recesses 52', 54' on respective plug end area.
When these two core plugs are put together, the projections 52, 54 and the recesses 52', 54' match and interlock the core plugs. It is evident that the pair of core plugs may have more than two circular concentric projections and matching recesses, particularly when core plugs with larger, such as 400 mm, diameter are used.
Figure 6 shows an embodiment of a pair of core plugs wherein one of the plugs has one projection in the form of a concentric gear-shaped or hollow star-shaped projection 62 and the other plug has one recess in the form of a concentric gear-shaped or hollow star- shaped recess 62'.
The recesses may be tapered inwards and the projections may be tapered outwards from the body end area in all of the embodiments of a pair of core plugs according to the invention. It is evident that the above shown designs of plugs in a pair of plugs according to the invention are just examples and may be modified without departing from the scope of the invention. For instance, the end area of the cylindrical body portion of one plug may have both recess(es) and projection(s) at a distance from its outer periphery as long as the other plug has matching projection(s) and/or recess(es) so that they form together a pair of core plugs which can be used to interlock two longitudinally adjacent tubular cores.
