Abstract
The present invention is directed to a composite that is useful for protecting a surface or an object from a sudden, violent release of energy, including, shock waves and/or stress waves. Such sudden, violent releases of energy may result from an explosion and may be referred to as a blast. The composite may include particulate carbon foam suspended in a matrix material. The carbon foam particles contain regions where the pores are empty. Additives may be added to change the physical properties of the composite. The uncured composite may be cast or molded to the desired configuration. Alternatively, the uncured composite may be coated on existing surfaces of a structure.
