Abstract

A device is disclosed which detects the increase in the temperature of the braking system by suitable probes (l)and drives a motor (12) that operates cams (10) to open valves (5) for the delivery of a refrigerating fluid under pressure to the brakes (7) getting overheated.

Description

Automatic device for cooling brakes of trucks and/or trailers
As known, trucks and/or trailers are subject to overheating of their brakes in case of extended use or following the failure of some component.
As a truck is running at full load or to a downhill road, the overheating of the brake of a wheel is detected by the driver because only one brake is not able to slacken strongly the speed of the truck. Moreover, an overheated brake does not provide a great braking force because the increase in the temperature lowers friction coefficient.
Under such circumstances, the temperature of the brake, drum or wheel disc increases by several hundreds of degrees causing the tyre to catch fire. The device of the present invention seeks to avoid the problem mentioned above.
The present patent application for industrial invention aims at providing a device able to detect any overheating of the brake as well as a device able to cool the brake as the latter gets overheated. A further object of the invention is to provide a device that can be easily installed in trucks and/or trailers .
The solution consists of providing a brake cooling system by using a cooling liquid or gas which is fed to the brake friction portions as the brake is operating. Such portions can be for instance the brake shoes or discs according to the braking system. This solution is schematically shown in the accompanying drawing only by way of a not limiting example.
The device consists of one or more temperature probes (1) which are applied to the surface of the brake shoes to sense the temperature continuously and to transmit temperature data to a central exchange (2) located near the driver.
The output of the central exchange is connected to a dispenser (3) consisting of a sealed housing including a chamber (4) containing an inert gas, for example CO2, or other liquid or gaseous refrigerant under pressure. Dispenser (3) is provided with several valves (5) the outputs (6) of which are connected to the brakes of wheels (7) by pipes (8) . Valves (5) are provided with stems (9) that can move along their axis.
The upper portion of each valve stem is in contact with a cam (10) .
Cams (10) of valves (5)
Figure imgf000003_0001
disposed on a shaft (11) displaced by step motor (12) . Springs (13) serve to shut valves (5) under no gas pressure .
Under rest conditions, valves (5) remain closed by the same pressure of the inert gas contained in chamber (4), while shaft (11) is in such a position that cams (10) do not contact stems (9) .
As a brake (7) gets overheated, temperature probe (1) detects such variation and transmits it to central exchange (2) that warns the driver and at the same time drives automatically motor (12) causing the cam to open the valve of that brake.
Thus the inert gas flows out of dispenser and is injected through pipe (8) toY brake (7) to cool it. As the temperature of an overheated brake drops under a determined value because of cooling, the central exchange shuts valve (5) corresponding to that brake again. Conversely, if temperature still increases, the central exchange keeps the valve open, thus causing the refrigerant to be continuously discharged onto the brake .
In case two or more brakes get overheated concurrently the system is able to cool them by the same operative principle .
The device can also provide for the cooling of the engine and/or turbine compartment.
The device can also be used in all applications in which the temperature of apparatus subjected to undesired heating should be checked.
Formal, structural changes of the solution of the present invention can also be made without departing from the scope of the inventive concept which is defined by the following claims.
