Description

COMBINATION PET BED ELEMENT
Field of the Invention
[0001] The present invention relates to a pet bed resulting from a drape fitted onto a container. The combination of the form-fitted drape with a corresponding container can provide suitable form to support and comfort a resting pet. The drape can be made of a collapsible material with various resistance properties. The container can be of any shape, size, and material that can accommodate a resting pet, and may have an original purpose other than as a pet support or carrier. The portability of the combination pet bed reflects the ability of the user to stow or discard the container while transporting the drape compactly, and then to apply the drape with the same container or another corresponding container to deploy the pet bed again.
Background of the Invention
[0002] Pet beds, pillows, rolls, cushions, and lounges (collectively pet beds) are generally full body, platform supports that are appropriate to a particular size category of animal, e.g., small, medium, large, or extra large. Pets tend to prefer to rest or sleep in a cozy environment that a pet bed can offer. The desirability of a pet bed can be influenced by the proper size, shape, support, and material of the bedding. These considerations have resulted in pet beds that are typically large, bulky and/or heavy, and thus, difficult to transport.
[0003] The portability of pet beds has been limited to those that can be partially folded or be rolled up. Such pet beds, however, still have significant size, bulk, and weight constraints that adversely impact portability. In addition, pet beds have unitary designs, with bedding permanently enclosed within a covering, or perhaps bedding enclosed within a removable cover. The latter designs can facilitate the cleaning, repair, or replacement of the bedding and cover, but do not contemplate the separate use of the bedding from the cover.
[0004] Because pet beds have not been easy to transport, caretakers find it difficult to furnish their pets with comfortable bedding in various settings. Indeed, those traveling with pets must plan ahead and make suitable space to pack these large, bulky and/or heavy objects. Accordingly, there remains a need for a combination pet bed that can be transported easily. Summary of the Invention
[0005] An object of the present invention is to provide a comfortable and simply maintainable pet bed that can be transported compactly and set up in an impromptu manner, perhaps using an available container that was not originally intended as a pet support or carrier.
[0006] The present invention relates to a portable drape made of a collapsible material that can be form-fitted to a container, the original purpose of which may be other than as a pet support or carrier. The application of the portable drape with the corresponding container can form a combination pet bed that accommodates a resting pet. When not needed, the combination pet bed of the present invention may be disassembled. The container can be stowed or discarded while the drape is transported compactly. The combination pet bed may then be redeployed by applying the drape with the same container or another corresponding container.
Brief Description of the Figures
[0007] Figure 1 is a depiction of an example of the portable drape of the present invention.
[0008] Figure 2 is a depiction of an example of the combination pet bed of the present invention where the portable, form- fitted drape is applied to a corresponding container.
Detailed Description of the Invention
[0009] The present invention relates to a portable drape comprising a collapsible material form-fitted to a container capable of accommodating a resting pet, where the original purpose of the container is other than as a pet support or carrier.
[0010] In one embodiment, the invention provides a fastener to hold the material to the container. The fastener may be reversible, adjustable, and/or elastic. The fastener may also include lines, ties, straps, tabs, holds, suspenders, and/or belts. The fastener may include hooks and loops, hooks and eyes, buckles, knots, snaps, buttons, adhesive tape, and/or zippers.
[0011] In another embodiment, the invention provides a collapsible material, such as a textile, that may be made from natural fibers, synthetic fibers, natural/synthetic fiber blends, and polymers. The material may be soil, stain, odor, pest, fur, heat, and/or water resistant. The material may be temporary and/or intended to be disposable. [0012] In a further embodiment, the invention provides a padding or foam that can be soil, stain, odor, pest, fur, heat, and/or water resistant.
[0013] In an embodiment, the invention provides a heating or cooling element.
[0014] In one other embodiment, the invention provides a container having a surround that exhibits a polygonal, circular, and elliptical geometric configuration. The container may be a box, a basket, a bucket, a tray, a bin, a hamper, a drawer, and/or cookware. The container may be disposable packaging, and may be paperboard packaging and/or plastic packaging. The container may be beverage case packaging, for example.
[0015] In yet another embodiment, the invention relates to a portable drape comprising a collapsible material form-fitted to a container capable of accommodating a resting pet, wherein the original purpose of the container is other than as a pet support or carrier, and wherein the material maintains coverage of the container without a fastener.
[0016] In still another embodiment, the invention provides a kit comprising a container adapted for accommodating a resting pet, and a portable drape comprising a collapsible material form-fitted to the container, where the container may be collapsible.
[0017] The term "portable" is meant to include characteristics such as compact, convenient, conveyable, easy to carry, handy, haulable, light, lightweight, manageable, movable, transportable, and the like.
[0018] The term "drape" is meant to include objects such as a blanket, cloak, clothe, cover, dress, drop, enclose, envelop, fold, rug, slipcover, spread, swathe, wrap, and the like.
[0019] The term "collapsible" is meant to include characteristics such as ability to break down, bunch, compact, compress, concentrate, consolidate, constrict, contract, crush, deflate, decrease, dehydrate, densify, fall down or inward or outward, fold, narrow, pack, press, ram, reduce, restrict, roll up, shorten, shrink, shrivel, squash, squeeze, stuff, tighten, wrap, and the like.
[0020] The term "material" is meant to include apparatus, body, bolt, coating, cloth, component, constituent, element, entity, equipment, fabric, foil, gear, goods, ingredient, machinery, matter, object, outfit, paraphernalia, sheet, stock, stuff, substance, tackle, textile, and the like. The "material" according to the invention may be permeable, semi-permeable or impermeable; continuous or mesh; and made of natural or synthetic fibers, polymers, metal, or composites thereof.
[0021] The term "form-fitted" is meant to include characteristics such as acceptable, accommodating, adapted, adequate, adjusted, agreeable, appropriate, altered, amended, changed, competent, complementary, compliant, consistent, corresponding, designed, equipped, favorable, fixed, good for, matched, modified, qualified, proper, ready, suitable, suited, tailored, and the like. The term "form-fitted" does not require any active steps to achieve the quality, and may include passive or indirect consequences.
[0022] In an embodiment where the collapsible material of the invention comprises fabric, this material may be faux fur, fleece, velor, or cotton chenille, for examples, that exhibit a nap suitable for relative ease of cleaning. This material may be provided along with foam, padding, or other soft bedding material, sewn onto or otherwise immobilized with the covering material, or alternatively, merely placed in direct or indirect contact.
[0023] In another embodiment where the portable drape comprises a fastener, this fastener may include the use of Velcro®, elastic or other apparatus that connects or supports multiple locations along the portable drape to allow for partial adjustment to the fit with a corresponding container.
[0024] In a further embodiment, the container of the invention maybe of various sizes, shapes, and materials. The container in the form of a box, a basket, a bucket, a tray, a bin, a hamper, a drawer, and/or cookware, for examples, may have sidewall support or surround element(s) (entire or partial; continuous or interrupted) that can provide a cozy, secure and/or enclosed environment to accommodate a resting pet. Where the containers of the present invention have an original purpose other than as a pet support or carrier, such containers may include beverage case tops or bottoms, open cardboard packaging, plastic crates and cartons, wicker baskets, pottery and planters, wash buckets, storage bins, drawers and trays, laundry hampers, and pots and pans.
[0025] In addition, the interaction of the portable, form-fitted drape with the corresponding container may provide rigidity and resiliency to the supportive nature of the combination pet bed sufficient to withstand the stresses caused by the resting pet's mass, weight, and motion. Indeed, the container may itself be collapsible for storage and transport, and capable of being constructed for use with the portable, form-fitted drape to provide the combination pet bed.
Examples
[0026] The following examples will further illustrate the present invention. It will be well understood by a person skilled in the art that the provided examples in no way may be interpreted in a way that limits the applicability of the technology provided by the present invention to these examples.
[0027] Example 1. A form-fitted slipcover embodiment of the present invention was constructed. Faux fur fabric was imported from France. This material is suitable for other uses, including manufacture in fashion designer collections (Dior, Gautier, etc.) for cuffs and collars on couture clothing and accessories such as hand bags. The fabric can have a cotton back and an acrylic nap that varies in length depending on the style of the particular fabric item. The material may be cleaned by machine wash in cold water with a mild shampoo, and air dried. Faux fur fabric can be obtained in styles including mink, chinchilla, wolf, snow leopard, etc., as well as animal prints and solid colors (black, white, brown, etc.). The faux fur fabrics are fashionable and can be appropriate to the decor of any room in a beautiful home. Other less expensive fabrics, however, can be used, such as synthetic sheepskin that is not imported, washable, and available in fewer styles and colors. Routine sewing materials and methods may be employed to create the form-fitted slipcover with the appropriate shape and dimensions for use with a container to achieve the combination pet bed. Fasteners such as Velcro® may be used as well. One such container was a beverage case packaging box for Crystal Geyser Alpine Spring Water™.
[0028] Example 2. In addition, a collapsible open top box container can be designed for specific used with the corresponding form-fitted portable drape. In this example, the sidewalls of the container would collapse for transport. When the form-fitted portable drape is applied, the sidewalls would be engaged by the drape with the sidewalls deployed and supported while used as a combination pet bed.
