THE METHOD FOR SELECTING VIDEO CONTENTS IN VIDEO- ON-DEMAND SYSTEM
Technical Field
[1] The present invention generally relates to a method for selecting video-on-demand
(VOD) contents to be ordered in a VOD service, and more particularly to a simple and efficient method for selecting VOD contents to be ordered in a VOD service using a set top box. Background Art
[2] Digital broadcasting is rapidly becoming common and standardized. Various technical developments are progressing in a number of areas, for example, digital signal transmission through a broadcasting network, data multiplexing, video and audio signal processing, digital television display and the like. Compared to analog broadcasting, the digital broadcasting can compress informational data for processing. Further, the digital broadcasting has a high transmission speed and provides superior quality of audio and video compared to analog broadcasting. Moreover, unlike the conventional analog broadcasting, the digital broadcasting is advantageous in that it can efficiently utilize frequency due to digital modulation. Therefore, it can broadcast a variety of information through hundreds of channels, which users can access through televisions.
[3] Among others, the digital broadcasting can implement an interactive television by data broadcasting. With the interactive television, the users can interact with the television, in addition to controlling the channel, volume and video tapes. Thus, the users can perform various operations such as payment, banking, shopping, reservation, games, forum discussion and the like. Moreover, there has recently been an increasing interest in ordering and watching video-on-demand (VOD) contents through the digital broadcasting, as shown in U.S. Patent Nos. 4,506,387, 4,890,320, 4,995,078, 5,063,610, 5,206,722 and 5,253,275.
[4] Figure 1 is a block diagram that shows a conventional VOD service structure, which is employed in a VOD service implementation using a set top box. Figure 2 shows a user interface presented on a screen using the service structure of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a user interface showing a list of basic information of VOD contents that are displayed on a screen when the menu bar of "Korean Movies" is selected among various menu bars shown in Figure 2. As shown in Figure 1, the conventional VOD service has a tree-structured menu structure. Accordingly, when a user requests the
VOD service, the VOD service presents the user with menu bars, which are obtained by categorizing VOD contents, such as "Korean Movies"(l l), "Foreign Movies" (12), "Sports"(13) and the like. Then, when the menu bar of "Korean Movies" is selected, basic information 21 of the VOD contents belonging to the menu bar is provided as shown in Figure 3. However, many trials-and-errors are often caused when a user finds a desired VOD contents using the tree structure as shown in Figure 1, which makes the user spend an extensive amount of time to select the desired VOD contents. [5] In order to solve the drawbacks of the aforementioned tree structure, there has been performed a search using keywords in addition to implementing the tree- structured menu, wherein the keywords are provided as basic information of the VOD contents, such as the title, cast, director and the like. In Figure 3, after inputting a keyword in the keyword input section 22, the search results matching the keyword are presented on a screen. However, in such a method, there often occurs a problem in presenting all of the results on one screen when a plurality of results matches the search word. Further, when the cast is used for a search, VOD contents produced as a series may not be retrieved together and some of them may be omitted. For example, although a series of contents can be produced under the title "Whispering Corridors," their casts and directors are different from each other. In such a case, the keyword search using the cast and director may result in undesired search results. Therefore, the title should be used as the keyword for obtaining proper search results. However, even the search using the title may sometimes fail to provide desired search results. Consequently, to obtain the desired results, search results for the title, cast, director and the like should cooperate with each other. Disclosure of Invention
Technical Problem
[6] It is an object of the present invention to provide a method capable of selecting
VOD contents to be ordered in a simple and efficient manner compared to a conventional method, while complementing a conventional keyword search. Technical Solution
[7] In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for selecting
VOD contents. The method of the present invention does not use a keyword or the like to search numerous VOD contents, but rather uses a one-to-one corresponding serial number to move to the basic information of the VOD contents corresponding to the serial number. In addition, the method of the present invention does not display only the basic information of VOD contents matching a keyword. On the contrary, after moving to the VOD contents corresponding to the serial number, the method of the present invention also provides the basic information of VOD contents adjacent to the
serial number.
[8] In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method in which related contents are assigned with consecutive serial numbers. Accordingly, after moving by serial number matching, the related contents are presented together on a screen. This allows easy and convenient selection of the related contents through channel up/down operations.
Advantageous Effects
[9] The method of selecting VOD contents in accordance with the present invention provides the following advantages.
[10] (1) First, unlike a conventional VOD contents transmission method using a tree structure, the present invention provides the identification of VOD contents based on serial numbers, which allows easy and simple selection of VOD contents to be ordered.
[11] (2) Second, unlike a conventional keyword search, the VOD selection method in accordance with the present invention provides not only the basic information of the VOD contents of the corresponding serial number but also the basic information of VOD contents adjacent to the serial number. If a user is not aware of the serial numbers and cannot identify a target VOD contents by a keyword search, then the user can perform a keyword search to identify a serial number of a VOD contents adjacent to the target VOD contents and then input the serial number followed by operating the channel up/down buttons. This allows the user to easily find the target VOD contents. Therefore, the VOD contents selection method in accordance with the present invention can be optimally used together with or as an alternative to the keyword search. Brief Description of the Drawings

[17] Figure 6 illustrates a user interface when a user inputs the serial number " 102" in a
VOD contents selection method in accordance with the present invention.
[18] Figure 7 is a flowchart illustrating a preferred embodiment of a VOD contents selection method in accordance with the present invention. Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
[19] A VOD contents selection method in accordance with the present invention comprises: assigning serial numbers to the VOD contents; displaying basic information of the VOD contents assigned with the serial numbers on a screen; and in response to input of a serial number from a user, moving to the basic information of the VOD contents corresponding to the serial number. Further, in addition to providing the basic information of the VOD contents corresponding to the input serial number, the basic information of VOD contents adjacent to the serial number is displayed together. Preferably, the basic information of the VOD contents corresponding to the input serial number is located in the middle of the list of the basic information of the VOD contents.
[20] Figure 4 illustrates a user interface that shows a preferred embodiment of a VOD contents selection method in accordance with the present invention. Figure 5 illustrates a user interface that is displayed on a screen after ordering by a serial number. As shown in Figure 4, each of the VOD contents is assigned with a serial number 100. A user can input a serial number to move to the basic information of the corresponding VOD contents. For the input of a serial number, a serial number input section 200 may be generated and presented to the user. By using the "order by serial number" menu bar 300 presented as an upper menu bar in Figure 4, all of the VOD contents may be ordered by the serial number. Reference numeral 400 in Figure 4, which has not yet been explained, refers to a menu bar that is used to change to a conventional tree- structured arrangement. A user can browse the contents after they are ordered by the serial number, as shown in Figure 5. When they are ordered by the serial number, a user can directly input a serial number to move to the basic information of the corresponding VOD contents, even without the specific serial number input section 200.
[21] Figure 6 shows a user interface when a user inputs the serial number " 105." Unlike a conventional search that provides the matched results only, a user is brought to the basic information of the VOD contents corresponding to the serial number "105," which is presented together with the basic information of VOD contents having adjacent and consecutive serial numbers, without any change in the user interface. This is illustrated in Figure 6, wherein the "Whispering Corridors" having the serial number " 105" is located in the middle, and the basic information of VOD contents having adjacent serial numbers (particularly, the serial numbers " 100" to "104" and "106" to " 110") is presented on the screen.
[22] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a
method for easily and conveniently selecting related contents through channel up/down operations. The method of the present invention assigns consecutive serial numbers to the related contents. Therefore, after moving by serial number matching, the related contents are presented together on a screen. As shown in Figure 6, the "Whispering Corridors 2," "Whispering Corridors 3" and "Whispering Corridors 4," which have the serial numbers of "106," " 107" and "108," respectively, are arranged consecutively after the "Whispering Corridors" (serial number: "105") and they can be easily selected by operating the channel up/down buttons. [23] Figure 7 is a flowchart illustrating a preferred embodiment of a VOD contents selection method in accordance with the present invention. As shown in Figure 7, the method assigns the serial numbers to VOD contents and displays the basic information of the VOD contents assigned with the serial numbers on a screen (SlOO). Then, the method receives a serial number from a user (S200) and determines whether there is a VOD contents corresponding to the serial number (S300). When it is determined that there is a VOD contents corresponding to the serial number, it brings the user to the basic information of the corresponding VOD contents (S400). As described above, the method does not display only the corresponding search results that are matched, but just moves to the corresponding VOD contents. Accordingly, the VOD contents having adjacent serial numbers are also provided. The method of the present invention determines whether there is an input of channel up/down buttons from the user (S500) and according to the channel up/down buttons, moves to the basic information of an adjacent VOD contents (S600). When a VOD contents ordering request is received from the user (S700), the method of the present invention delivers a signal requesting the corresponding VOD contents to a VOD server (S 800). After receiving the requested VOD contents from the VOD server, the method of the present invention displays it on a screen (S900).
