Abstract

A back light unit (110) for a liquid crystal display is provided. The unit comprises a light guide plate (102), a reflecting surface (101) arranged parallel and adjacent to the back surface of the light guide plate. Further, the light guide plate (102) comprises an interfacing surface (104) between a first material and a second material, which interfacing surface comprises microstructures (105) which are arranged such that light is outcoupled from said light guide plate (102) towards said reflecting surface (101). By using a backlight unit of the invention, the need for diffusers between the backlight unit and the liquid crystal cell of an LCD is reduced.
