Abstract

A routing method for routing data from a source node to a destination node, comprising defining a physical metric and a virtual metric of distances between the nodes, maintaining each node a data storage of information about at least some of the nodes (1202), for deriving forwarding information for use in forwarding the data between the nodes, selecting from the data storage of an instant node an intermediate node that is closer to the destination node than the instant node according to the virtual metric (1714) , retrieving information about the intermediate node from the data storage of the instant node and attaching forwarding information derived therefrom to the data . (1710) , and determining whether the data can be forwarded using the attached forwarding information and if so forwarding the data, or whether a further intermediate node is required and if so attaching new forwarding information, or whether the data has reached the destination node (1712) .
