Abstract
An antenna arrangement is provided for use with a card (101) having a wireless modem for a computing device. The antenna arrangement comprises (i) an antenna (102) operable in use as an external antenna; and (ii) a coupling (104) providing in use an electrical coupling from the antenna to the card, wherein the coupling arrangement comprises a balun connector (109, 150, 111) which is adapted to provide a parallel resonator at a frequency of operation of the antenna.
Claims
1. An antenna arrangement for use with a card having a wireless modem for a computing device, the antenna arrangement comprising (i) an antenna operable in use as an external antenna; and (ii) a coupling providing in use an electrical connection from the antenna to the card, wherein the coupling comprises a balun connector which is adapted to provide a parallel resonator at a frequency of operation of the antenna.
2. Λn antenna arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the coupling provides in operation an isolation of at least 12 dB between the antenna and the card.
3. Λn antenna arrangement according to claim 2 wherein the coupling provides in operation an isolation of at least 15 dB between the antenna and the card.
4. An antenna arrangement according claim 1 wherein the coupling includes a looped conductor providing an inductance and a portion which provides a capacitance which together in operation contribute to a parallel resonance of the coupling arrangement.
5. An antenna arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the coupling comprises a coaxial cable having an inner conductor, an outer conductor and an insulating sheath between the inner conductor and the outer conductor.
6. An antenna arrangement according to claim 5 wherein the coaxial cable includes a loop providing an inductance and has an overlap region in which one portion of the cable runs over another portion of the cable to provide a capacitive coupling across the cable.
7. , An antenna arrangement according to claim 6 wherein the loop of the cable comprises an elongate loop having long sides and having a maximum length 13
measured along its long sides which is at least twice its maximum width measured between respective outer sides of the loop.
8. An antenna arrangement according to claim 6 wherein the loop is formed substantially in a plane which in use is occupied by a card having a wireless modem for a computing device to which card the coupling portion is connected.
9. An antenna arrangement according to claims 5 wherein the coaxial cable has an end portion adapted for connection to a card having a wireless modem for a computing device.
10. An antenna arrangement according to claim 9 wherein the coaxial cable has a twisted portion and another portion over which the twisted portion passes, the other portion being adapted for connection to a construction including the antenna.
11. An arrangement according to claim 10 wherein the portion of the cable adapted for connection to a construction including the antenna consists only of the inner conductor and this insulating sheath of the coaxial cable, the outer conductor of the cable being cut away in this portion.
12. An antenna arrangement according to claim 1 including an insulating module adapted to be attached to a card to form an extension to the card, the coupling of the antenna arrangement being incorporated within the insulating module.
13. An antenna according to claim 12 wherein the insulating module comprises a moulded casing in which the coupling portion is embedded.
14. An antenna according to claim 12 wherein the insulating module is adapted to be substantially coplanar with a card to which it is attached. 14
15. An antenna arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the antenna includes a radiator in the form of a wire conductor.
16. An antenna arrangement according to claim 15 wherein the wire conductor comprises a single straight linear wire portion.
17. An antenna arrangement according to claim 14 wherein the wire conductor includes a plurality of connected straight linear wire portions.
18. An antenna arrangement according to claim 1 wherein the antenna is included in a construction including a base and a flexible mechanical joint between the antenna and the base to allow an orientation of the antenna to be varied relative to the coupling portion.
19. An antenna arrangement according to claim 18 wherein the flexible mechanical joint allows the antenna to be folded to lie adjacent to the coupling portion.
