Abstract

The invention discloses a method and apparatus configured for generating disparity values for pixels of a two dimensional (2-D) image of a three dimensional (3-D) scene. The 3-D scene comprises one or more objects and each object is represented by a plurality of vertices. The disparity values and 2-D image are subsequently used for synthesising left and right eye image views of the 3-D scene for display on a stereoscopic or multiple view display, giving a viewer the perception of viewing the scene in 3-D. The method comprises storing for each vertex of a portion of a first object at least one disparity attribute according to a level of 3-D effect required for the portion of the first object, and storing for each vertex of a portion of a second object at least one disparity attribute according to a different level of 3-D effect required for the portion of the second object. Then the vertices of the portion of the object are rasterised into pixels. The rasterising process comprises interpolating between the disparity attributes of the vertices to give disparity attributes for each rasterised pixel. Finally each pixel's disparity value is calculated according to the pixel's disparity attributes.
