Definitions
- the present invention relates to a carrier of microorganisms used to decompose the contaminating elements of wastewater that are introduced into a treatment plant.
- the object of the invention is the development of a carrier of microorganisms of special geometry characterized by a large surface that favors the creation of a biofilm and facilitates the flow of water through and around the carrier to enhance the contact and decomposition of the contaminating elements. by the biofilm; Likewise, it must have the smallest possible surface of contact with other carriers to avoid the release of the biofilm.
- the basic principle of the fluid bed process is based on the growth of biomass in plastic supports that move in a biological reactor by means of continuous agitation generated by aeration systems.
- the biological reactor generally consists of the following elements:
- the effluent is introduced into the reactor where microorganisms grow by forming an organic film in the carrier elements that float in the fluid. These microorganisms break down the contaminating elements.
- the geometric design of the carrier is therefore essential to achieve an optimal transfer of the substrate and oxygen to the biological film, resulting in an essential factor for good system performance.
- the oxygen required by the microorganisms is supplied by the injection of air in the form of bubbles from the bottom of the reactor.
- the bubble flow agitates the mixture and allows the carrier elements to be in continuous motion.
- the treated effluent leaves the reactor through a screen using an air pump that prevents foaming problems.
- the carrier of microorganisms for use in wastewater treatment plants of fluid bed that constitutes the object of this invention stands out mainly for showing a helical cylindrical design.
- This design is based on the incorporation of one or more helical fins attached to a cylindrical body that can be solid or hollow, the number of helical fins can vary between 1 and 6 depending on the passage of the number of fins.
- the cylindrical body In the case that the cylindrical body is solid, it only serves as a structural support for the helical fins and its radius is minimal; In the case that it is hollow in addition to being used as a structural support, it also allows the creation of a biofilm on its inner surface.
- the carrier will preferably have the hollow cylindrical body.
- the carriers have a relationship between the surface and the high occupied volume which allows a biologically active surface for a given volume, this value is greater than 500 m 2 / m 3 .
- the carriers introduced in the medium do not occupy it completely but have sufficient space in the medium to facilitate a constant movement that allows the optimal aeration of all the surfaces of the carrier, occupying a volume in the medium between 40 and 75% .
- the carriers within the fluidized bed will be subjected to a continuous movement so that the deposits on the surface are eliminated and the clogging disappears.
- the helical fins instead of the cylindrical body, constitute the contact surfaces with the fins corresponding to other carriers, thus protecting most of the cylindrical body where the bacteria grow, also these helical fins prevent the agglutination of carriers when collisions occur.
- the percentage of emptiness is directly related to the price of the piece for which it is interesting to keep it as high as possible to reduce the cost of carrier. It is considered that the percentage of emptiness of the carrier with respect to the envelope volume is greater than 70%.
- the hollow of the carrier has an adequate size to facilitate, not only the creation of the biofilm, but also the flow through it to favor contact and the decomposition of the elements contaminants by the biofilm, thus preventing the gaps from being occluded by suspended materials or by the growth of the biofilm itself, thus avoiding the appearance of blockages or depositions on the carrier that would reduce the biological contact surface.
- the carrier's component materials have a density very close to that of the water, so that any ascending or sinking movement is minimized and the movements occur randomly induced by the injection of air in the middle.
- the density of the material is between 0.9 and 1.2 Kg / dm 3 .
- the design of the carrier will also take into consideration a sufficient mechanical strength to avoid deformation caused by stresses in the contact between carriers, especially during the filling and emptying of the tank.
- the carriers are preferably designed in materials resistant to corrosion and chemical attack such as plastics, which may incorporate inhibitors to prevent degradation due to the effect of ultraviolet radiation and which must be inert for all types of bacteria, considering that the carriers they can be, for example, polypropylene or polyethylene.
- the material immersed in water for long periods of time is resistant to the degradation of both light, chemical, aerobic or anaerobic, also to favor that bacteria are located and grow on the surface of the carrier the surface of it is hydrophilic.
- Figure 1. Shows a perspective view of the carrier of microorganisms object of this invention in its hollow cylindrical configuration with three helical fins.
- Figure 2.- Shows an elevation view of the microorganism carrier represented in the previous figure.
- Figure 3. Shows a plan view of the same carrier of microorganisms.
- the carrier of microorganisms for use in wastewater treatment plants of fluid bed that constitutes the object of this invention is represented in the figures according to a possible embodiment of the invention.
- the carrier is of the type that shows a surface in which a biofilm grows to decompose the contaminant elements of the wastewater and basically comprises a cylindrical body (1) around which one or more helical fins are located (2), preferably from 1 to 6, contemplating for the case represented in the figures a hollow cylindrical body (1) with three helical fins (2).
- the carrier comprising a hollow cylindrical body (1) has a relationship between the inner radius r of the cylindrical body (1) and the outer radius R of the helical fin (2) of less than 1, preferably between 0 and 0 , 6, showing in the case of the figures a ratio of 0.5.
