Description

The subject of the present invention is an antitheft device for motorcycles.
Up to the present day, the market does not offer devices at a contained cost that are able to provide a reliable security against theft of motorcycles.
Currently, there does not exist in the state of the art any antitheft device at a contained cost that is able to combine, in a single product, the security of mechanical blocking, which above all prevents the motorcycle from being dragged away, with the convenience and the security of an electronic device, which, in the event of an attempt at theft, in addition to not enabling starting of the engine, activates acoustic and visual signals to draw the attention of people present in the vicinity to the fact that an attempt at theft is in progress.
The invention in question preferably combines mechanical blocking with electronic blocking in a single system. Currently available on the market are two types of antitheft device: mechanical and electronic.
Mechanical antitheft devices, such as for example a chain, a gorgon lock, a cable lock, a padlock, a disk lock, or a shackle lock, in addition to not offering (on account of their particular constructional nature) an acceptable degree of security, present some drawbacks . A first drawback is that they must be set in operation during a stop and be put away in the box or carrier or in the luggage compartment underneath the saddle of the motorcycle. A second drawback is that they are frequently cumbersome and/or heavy and in many cases do not find a suitable housing within motorcycles owing to lack of space .
A third drawback is represented by the fact that insertion of traditional mechanical locks (e.g., the disk lock, which also on acαount of its small size is far from easily visible) does not prevent starting of the engine, and hence does not prevent the user from carrying out accidental starts, finding himself in situations of potential danger both for himself and for other people.
A fourth drawback is that said traditional mechanical locks are not fixed to a vital structural point of the motorcycle (the frame) , where, in the event of mechanical tampering, the damage is limited to the device itself and does not cause any failure and/or deformation such as might constitute a deterrent on account of the loss of the sale value of the motorcycle on the illegal market. In sortie cases, the chained wheel can even be removed and replaced with another one so as to enable the motorcycle to be taken away.
Furthermore, all the mechanical antitheft devices, once removed or tampered with and neutralized, do not prevent starting of the engine of the motorcycle and hence fraudulent removal thereof, and the ill- intentioned person simply has to perform a single action.
As regards electronic antitheft devices, these are also, by their very constructional nature, easy to get round and present a series of drawbacks . A first drawback is represented by the fact that electronic antitheft devices, unlike mechanical ones, do not prevent the motorcycle from being removed and then pushed away.
A second drawback is represented by the fact that electronic antitheft devices involve major trouble both for the user and for other people in view of the large number of false alarms to which said antitheft devices are subject.
A third drawback, which is a natural consequence of the high number of false alarms, is represented by the fact that, on account of their very small size, the batteries of motorcycles run down fast.
A fourth drawback is represented by the fact that the limited constructional dimensions of motorcycles mean that the electronic antitheft devices are easy to identify and cut out (e.g., by cutting the cables, etc.) .
A fifth drawback is represented by the fact that, owing to their very nature, they are easy to identify in so far as all electronic systems are based upon a system of optical deterrence (flashing of direction lights) and a system of acoustic deterrence (siren) and can be easily broken by any ill-intentioned person in a very short time by violent mechanical action. Furthermore, also in these last few cases the ill- intentioned person simply has to carry out just one action to achieve his purpose.
The aim of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks described, previously for both types of antitheft device. This has been obtained, according to the invention, by providing an antitheft device for ^ motorcycles that, unlike ones available in the state of the art, preferably comprises:
- means for mechanical blocking of the transmission of motion and/or in any case of the movement of the motorcycle;
- means for electronic blocking of starting of the engine;
- acoustic and luminous signalling means; and - an electronic antitheft apparatus .
A better understanding of the invention will be obtained from the ensuing detailed description with reference to the attached figures, which show, purely by way of non-limiting example, a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Figures 5 and 6, which are analogous to Figures 1 and 2, regard a variant of the invention.
The invention consists of an antitheft device for motorcycles provided with wheels with spokes, frame, fork of a "pro-link" type or fork whether rear or front, hub, ring gear, and/or brake disk. The invention comprises means for mechanical blocking of one or both of the wheels or of any- component of the motorcycle designed to block the members of transmission of motion and/or in any case of movement of the motorcycle, , preferably in combination with means for electronic blocking, designed both to inhibit starting of the engine, in the case where the means for mechanical blocking were activated, and to generate a light signal and acoustic signal of alarm, in order to prevent theft of the motorcycle by an ill- intentioned person, forcing him to carry out at least two simultaneous actions of tampering and of violent mechanical effraction.
It is possible to apply the invention on any point of the motorcycle such as to guarantee a firm fixing of the device on the motorcycle itself and to enable a user to insert a purposely designed key in a lock for the purpose of activating . said means of mechanical blocking. To facilitate understanding of the present invention, reference is made to Figure 1, where the antitheft device is installed, by means of a mechanical fit, on the rear fork A of the frame of a motorcycle, where said fork is preferably of a known type referred to as "pro-link".
In the preferred embodiment that is described, the antitheft device comprises:
- a lock assembly 6 provided with an antenna 8 ;
- a mechanical thrust element 7 provided with a lock, designed to slide axially within said lock assembly 6 up to an eηd-of-travel or operative position, in which it comes out of an end of the lock assembly 6 and blocks an element of the kinematic chain for transmission of motion: in the case in point, the ring gear B of the chain on the rear wheel of the motorcycle;
- a purposely designed key 11 designed to be inserted in said lock for actuating said mechanical thrust element 6; said key for actuating 11 being provided with a transponder 10 for electronic enabling of starting of the engine of the motorcycle; and
- a magnetic switch 9 of a reed type or the like, designed to detect the position of said mechanical
I thrust element 7; said magnetic switch being positioned on a purposely designed rib 5 fixed to the lock assembly 6.
In the example that is described, the mechanical thrust element 7 is designed to move a piston 3 from a position of start-of-travel to a position of end-of- travel or operative position, in which said piston 3 blocks the ring gear B of the wheel of the motorcycle, by projecting from the side of said wheel that is opposite to the one where the antitheft device is installed.
The mechanical thrust element 7 is made of anti- effraction material, which is designed to guarantee a high mechanical grip in the event of violent effraction, said mechanical grip being obtained by means of anchorage of the antitheft device on the rear fork A of the frame, which discharges any force induced on the system directly on the frame itself of the motorcycle, causing the possible deformation and/or failure thereof.
It is preferable for the actuation key 11 to be provided with a head that can be turned down through 90° to afford greater security in the event of accidental impact, since it is always inserted in a condition of deactivation in- the lock of the mechanical thrust element 7.
It is moreover preferable, in order to reduce the risk of failure, for said key 11 to be provided with a grip that can be bent over and/or that can be turned down.
According to a peculiar characteristic of the invention, an electronic control unit 12 is provided, which is designed to be connected both to said antenna 8 and to said magnetic switch 9 and has the following functions :
- recognizing the state of the means for mechanical blocking (activated or deactivated) via the magnetic sensor 9; - reading a code coming from the transponder 10 of the actuation key 11 by means of the antenna 8, afrranged on the lock assembly 6;
- processing the information coming from the magnetic switch 9 and from the transponder 10 of the actuation key 11 and possibly blocking the engine of the motorcycle;
- activating acoustic and visual signals in the event of attempts at theft, effraction or tampering;
- activating, in the event of theft of the motorcycle, progressive turning-off of the engine, when the motorcycle that has been stolen reaches a pre-set condition of safety, such as for example when it is stationary or its speed is below 15 km/h.
In the latter case, the theft can be indicated via the action of a mechanical push-button appropriately located or the loss of a radiofrequency signal coming from a purposely designed "card" in the pocket of the owner of the motorcycle.
The mechanical fit between the antitheft device and the frame of the motorcycle is provided by means of a1 pin C, which is preferably hexagonal, housed with the faces of the hexagon between the retention tabs 2, which are designed to create a constraint to prevent j rotation and extraction of^ said pin C, to enable tightening of a nut to the opposite side of the wheel and to guarantee that said nut, retained within the component, cannot be extracted by ill-intentioned persons, thus preventing the antitheft device from b|eing dismantled. I The lock assembly 6 is fixed to two ribs 4 and 5, j and the antenna 8 receives the signal of the transponder 10 that is englobed in the actuation key 11 for electronic enabling of starting of the engine.
Said electronic enabling is confirmed only when the mechanical thrust element 7 is in the position where it is not in use, i.e., with the pin 3 in its start-of-travel position (Figures 1 and 2).
As already mentioned, in order to confirm enabling, a magnetic switch 9 of a reed type or the like is provided, incorporated in the rib 5, designed to interact with the electronic control unit 12 in i order to render the means for electronic immobilization of the engine completely independent of the electrical equipment of the motorcycle.
To block transmission of motion of the wheel, the user must displace the thrust element 7 up to an end- of-travel position, obtaining as a result displacement of the pin 3 along its own axis from a start-of-travel position to an end-of-travel * or operative position, and in said position he must turn the key 11 in the lock to block the pin 3 at end-of-travel and then be able to remove the key 11.
In the example described, the pin 3 extends substantially transverse to the wheel and/or to its components (spokes, ring gear B, brake disk, hub, or whatever else may be useful for bringing about blocking) or any other member designed to block transmission.

In this case, said member is constituted by the ring gear B for the chain that governs the driving gear of the motorcycle, fixed to the wheel, so as to prevent it from turning freely.
When the key 11 is taken out, the electronic control unit 12 detects the absence of the transponder 10 via the antenna 8 of the lock assembly 6 and, if the magnetic switch 9 detects that the thrust element 7 is at the end of travel, it inhibits starting of the engine .
Only in the case of attempts at theft, the system reaches the operative condition of protection, independently of the mechanical device, by actuating the push-button or via the card that sees to t immobilizing the engine according to modalities of absolute safety.
In a variant of the invention, a different type of fixing of the antitheft device to the frame of the motorcycle is envisaged. As illustrated in Figures 5 and β, in this variant the antitheft device is provided with a bottom arm 20 designed to be inserted on the inside of the rear fork and constrained there to the chain tightener usually installed on motorcycles. In the example illustrated, the body of the chain tightener has been appropriately modified to enable insertion of the arm 20 itself within the boxlike body of the rear fork A.
It is evident that ^anchorage of the device i according to the invention to the motorcycle can be made in other points of the motorcycle itself according to the geometry of the latter, which depends upon the constructional designs of the various models of motorcycle that are put on the market by the manufacturer.
A first advantage of the invention is represented by the fact that in an attempt to tamper with or remove the device, the ill-intentioned person or persons is/are forced to carry out at least two simultaneous actions of tampering and of violent mechanical effraction.
A second advantage is vthat means for mechanical blocking of the wheel or wheels and for electronic immobilization of the engine block are activated simultaneously and with a single action by means of just rotation and removal of the key. A third advantage is that there are no means for mechanical immobilization of the motorcycle that must be taken out of the case or luggage compartment of the saddle of the motorcycle and positioned/removed for blocking/unblocking of the wheel or wheels .
Consequently, a fourth advantage is that there is no additional space or weight to be envisaged for holding and carrying the *antitheft device on the motorcycle . A fifth advantage is represented by the fact that a possible mechanical tampering on the part of an ill- intentioned person risks deforming permanently and/or breaking the frame of the motorcycle with a consequent increase of the effect of deterring the ill-intentioned person or persons on account of the considerable depreciation of the sale value of the motorcycle on the illegal market, assuming, that is, that the ill- intentioned person succeeds in his attempt given the high degree of difficulty involved in nullifying the mechanical means of blocking of the transmission of the wheel .
A sixth advantage is represented by the ease of installation of the device according to the invention without any need to alter the components of the motorcycle, and/or the original structure thereof.
A seventh advantage is represented by the possibility of re-using the antitheft device in the event of replacement of the motorcycle .
An eighth advantage is represented by the fact that it is possible to start the engine only upon deactivation of the means for mechanical blocking of the wheel or wheels.
A ninth advantage is represented by the impossibility for the motorcyclist to carry out accidental starts, without having first deactivated the I means for mechanical blocking on the wheel or wheels, thus preventing situations of potential danger for himself and other people.
A tenth advantage is that the key is extracted only after having activated the means for mechanical and electronic blocking to guarantee the effective intervention of the device.
An eleventh advantage is represented by the impossibility of obtaining, at a commercial level, a i fraudulent copy of the actuation key of the blocking means, which virtually precludes the theft of the motorcycle.
A twelfth advantage is represented by the fact that the antitheft device does not cause the batteries of the motorcycle to get run down owing to continuous false alarms that bring about activation of the siren and flashing of lights (direction indicators), in so far as these means cannot be activated by external environmental factors, such as impact, wind, rain, etc.
Finally, as already mentioned, the invention advantageously consists of a single antitheft device comprising means for mechanical blocking of the wheel or wheels, means for electronic immobilization of the engine, means of acoustic and visual signalling, and an I electronic antitheft apparatus, all of which come under and can be actuated by means of a key that cannot be duplicated.

Claims

CIAIMS
1. An antitheft device to be installed on motorcycles, characterized in that it comprises means i for mechanical blocking of at least one element of the kinematic chain for transmission of motion to the wheel, thus preventing the motorcycle from being dragged away by an ill-intentioned person.
2. The antitheft device according to Claim 1, characterized in that it envisages, in combination with said means for mechanical blocking, further means for electronic immobilization of the engine designed to inhibit starting of the engine itself, when the means for mechanical blocking are in the operative position, thus obtaining that a possible ill-intentioned person who seeks to steal said motorcycle will have to perform at least two simultaneous actions of tampering and of violent mechanical effraction.
3. The antitheft device according to the preceding claim, characterized in that said means for electronic blocking comprise means designed to generate a signal of light and/or acoustic alarm in the event of theft of the motorcycle.
4. The antitheft device according to Claim 1, characterized in that said means for mechanical blocking comprise: - a hollow lock assembly (6);
- a mechanical thrust element (7) provided with a lock, designed to slide axially within said lock assembly (6) up to an end-of-travel or operative position, in which it comes out of an end of said lock assembly (6) and blocks said element of the kinematic chain for transmission of motion; and
- a purposely designed key (11) , designed to be inserted in said lock for actuating said mechanical thrust element 6.
5. The antitheft device according to Claim 1, characterized in that said means for mechanical blocking comprise:
- a hollow lock assembly (6);
- a mechanical thrust element (7) provided with a lock, designed to slide axially within said lock assembly (6), moving a piston (3) from a position of start-of-travel to an end-of-travel or operative position, in which said piston (3) comes out of an end of said lock assembly (6) and blocks said element of the kinematic chain for transmission of motion; and
- a purposely designed key (11) , designed to be inserted in said lock for actuating said mechanical thrust element (6) .
6. The antitheft device according to Claim 1, characterized in that said element of the kinematic chain for transmission of motion is the ring gear (B) of the chain on the rear wheel of the motorcycle.
7. The antitheft device according to Claims 2 and 4 or Claims 2 and 5, characterized in that said further means for electronic blocking comprise:
- an antenna (8), arranged on said lock assembly;
- a transponder (10), arranged on the key (11) and associated to said antenna (8) for electronic enabling of starting of the engine of' the motorcycle; - a magnetic switch (9) of a reed type or the like, designed to detect the condition of the means for mechanical blocking; and
- an electronic control unit (12), designed to be connected both to said antenna (8) and to said magnetic switch (9) to carry out the following functions: - recognizing the state of the means for mechanical blocking (in a condition of rest or in an operative condition) via said magnetic switch (9) /
- reading a code coming from said transponder (10) of the key (11) by means of said antenna (8); - processing the information coming from said magnetic switch (9) and from said transponder (10) and possibly blocking the engine of the motorcycle;
- activating acoustic and visual signals in the event of attempts at theft of the motorcycle, effraction or tampering; and
- activating the progressive turning-off of the engine in the event of theft of the motorcycle.
8. The antitheft device according to Claim 4 or
Claim 5, characterized in that the key (11) is provided with a head and/or grip that can be turned down through
90° to afford greater security in the event of i accidental impact, since it is always inserted in a condition of deactivation in the lock of the mechanical thrust element (7) .
9. The antitheft device according to Claim 1, characterized in that is designed to be inserted in and fixed on the outside of the rear fork (A) .
10. The antitheft device according to the preceding claim, characterized in that it is coupled I mechanically to the frame of the motorcycle by means of a pin (C) .
11. The antitheft device according to the preceding claim, characterized in that said pin (C) is hexagonal.

The antitheft devide according to Claim 10 or Claim 11, characterized in that said pin (C) is housed between the retention tabs (2), designed to create a constraint to prevent rotation and extraction of said pin (C) , to enable tightening of a nut to the opposite side of the wheel and to guarantee that said nut, retained within the component, cannot be extracted by an ill-intentioned person, thus preventing the antitheft device from being dismantled.

The antitheft device according to Claim 1, characterized in that it is provided with an arm (20), designed to be inserted on the inside of the rear fork (A) and constrained there to the chain tightener usually installed on motorcycles and appropriately modified to enable insertion of said arm (20) .
14. The antitheft device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that it may be installed on any point of the motorcycle such as to guarantee a firm fixing of said device 6 to the motorcycle itself and to enable a user to activate said means of mechanical blocking.
