Abstract
There is disclosed a method of improving dependability in an OPS network in which a plurality of data packets having the same destination are grouped into a packet set. At least one redundant packet is created for each packet set and each data and redundant packet in the packet is transmitted set over a different disjoint path between two nodes in the network. The disjoint paths are those paths in a selected path set, such that in the event of failure of one of the disjoint paths, a data packet which has failed to be received by the second node can be reconstructed using information from the received packets. The total number of packets in each packet set is equal to the total number of different disjoint paths in the path set and the paths in the path set are selected as being all the paths which have a lower cost than the combined cost of a pre-determined number, preferably two, of the lowest cost paths.
