Figure 1 shows the main elements of a putter. The handle (1) has at its upper end the grip (2); it is by the grip that the player holds the putter. At the lower end of the handle is fixed the head (3) of the putter. The putter's head hits the ball.
Figure 2 details some details of a commonly used putter head. The face facing the objective is a flat surface called the striking face (4); she touches the ball at the moment of the strike. On the top of the putter's head is marked a line (5). This feature (5) has, at the time of the address, two functions. On the one hand, it indicates the ideal point of the striking face which must touch the ball; on the other hand, it is a help for the orientation of the putter's head in the intended direction. However, the player's eyes are of the order of 1, 50 m just above the line, the accuracy obtained is low.
The device object of this invention consists of two orientation marks located on the rear part of the head of the putter. They are arranged in such a way that the player, having his gaze in the plane of sight, sees these two marks in coincidence when the striking face is oriented towards the point in question.
The first characteristic of the invention is visualized in FIG. 3. When the player lets the putter hang by holding it by the top of the grip, the handle has a vertical straight line called in this 'Right of reference' patent. Depending on the mechanical construction of the putter, the reference line may be for example the axis of the handle, or one of the edges of the handle, or one of the edges of the grip, or any other vertical line of the handle.
This angle (6) is called 'loft'. If the loft was zero degrees, the striking face would be vertical; the plane of the striking face in case of zero loft is called in this patent 'Loft loft plan'.
By definition in this patent, the 'reference plane' is the plane which is perpendicular to the zero loft plane and which contains the reference line.
Figure 5 shows an embodiment of a putter head object of the invention.
The first orientation mark is a line (7) on the back side of the putter's head. This is the intersection of the rear face and the reference plane. In the case of Figure 5, and in the case of Figure 7, the reference plane is the one passing through the axis of the handle. In this example, the line (7) is located on the vertical part of the rear face.
The upper part of the rear face of the putter is equipped with a partial ring (8) protruding towards the rear. The second orientation mark (9) is the intersection of the partial ring and the reference plane. In the case of Figure 5, the mark (9) is on the upper face of the partial ring (8). The marker (9) could also for example be located on the rear face of the partial ring; in this case, the ring can be replaced by a plate.
The angle (10) made by the straight line passing through the marker (9) and the lower part of the marker (7) with the zero loft plane must be positive, of the order of 20 to 60 degrees (see FIG. 6). .
The routine to steer the putter is as follows: the player stands behind the ball, squatting or kneeling on the ground. He holds the putter arm extended, and lets him hang freely behind the ball. He aligns the reference line on the center of the ball, and places the directing eye in the vertical plane of sight defined by the ball and the aiming point. It then remains to rotate the putter around the axis of the handle until the two marks are in coincidence, as shown in Figure 7. The striking face is then well oriented in the direction aimed.
The support face of the marker (7) is not necessarily vertical. It can be oblique, or even horizontal as shown in Figure 8.
An important point when using such a putter is to keep the correct orientation during the phase of the routine which consists in passing the putter from its hanging vertical position to its address position, ie the head putter on the green. To improve this phase, the underside of the putter head is equipped with stabilizing grooves, for example triangular section grooves (11), as shown in FIG. 9.
Another improvement, see Figure 10, is to add on the upper end of the grip a mark (12) in the form of a line or groove, located at the intersection of the reference plane with the end of the grip. In the example of Figure 10, the reference plane passes through the axis of the handle.
This double sighting mark substantially increases the accuracy of the orientation of the putter's head at the address, and thus improves the success rate of putting. Since half of the shots are on the green, the improvement of the score is significant.
