Description
Video Display
This invention relates to video display, and is concerned with video display units and systems and methods of monitoring the functioning of such units and systems.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a video display unit for providing a display in accordance with a video signal input to the unit, wherein the unit includes means for adding a marker signal to the input video signal for representation in the display, sensor means for responding to the representation of the marker signal in the display, and detector means for detecting whether the marker representation is sensed by the sensor means .
The video display unit of the invention is of advantage particularly (though not exclusively) in those circumstances where the video display unit is to be used to display a sequence of images, for example advertising images, in a public environment where it is unattended.
The detecting means may be used in this context for monitoring the proper functioning of the display unit in verifying that the images have been or are being displayed.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a method of monitoring the functioning of a video display unit wherein a marker signal is added to the video signal input to the unit, and the presence or absence of sensing by sensor means of representation of this marker signal in the display, is detected.
The marker signal used in the video display unit and method of the invention may be added to the video signal input in such a manner that the marker representation appears in a specific location of the display. The sensor means, which may be a photo-responsive device such as a photodiode or phototransistor, may be positioned in the region of this specific location for responding to the presence of the marker representation in the display.
The marker representation, which may be a flashing cursor, may provide an analogue or digital signature or identifier for recognition by the detector means.
The use of a marker representation that provides an analogue or digital signature or identifier is of advantage where the video display unit is part of a system involving a plurality of such units, and may be used, for example, where monitoring of the proper functioning of the individual video display units is to be carried out from a central station common to them all.
According to an additional aspect of the invention a video display system comprises: a plurality of video display units each for providing a display in accordance with a video signal input to the respective unit; means for adding a marker signal to the input video signal of each individual unit for representation in the display of that respective unit, each unit including sensor means for responding to the representation of the marker signal in the display of that respective unit; and detector means for detecting in respect of each individual unit whether the marker representation is sensed by the sensor means of that unit.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a method of monitoring the functioning of a plurality of video display units, wherein a marker signal
is added to the video signal input to each individual video display unit, and the presence or absence of sensing by sensor means of representation of this marker signal in the display of the respective display unit, is detected.
With the system and method of system-monitoring of the invention, the same or different video signals may be input to different ones of the video display units, and the marker signal added to the input video signal may be the same or different for different ones of the units. In particular, the marker signal added to the video signal input to each respective video display unit may be individual to that unit and may provide an analogue or digital signature or identifier individual to that unit.
The invention in all the above aspects is applicable with advantage where sequences of advertisements are to be displayed, for example in one or more shopping centres or other public places, for verifying that the advertisements are being faithfully displayed by video display units in all those places, and/or providing alarm or other response where display by any of those units is for any reason interrupted or otherwise impaired.
A video display system for use in providing verified display of advertisements, in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic representation of the video display system of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a schematic representation of a typical video display unit according to the invention, used in the video display system of Figure 1.
The example of video display system to be described is for use in displaying sequences of advertisements to the public in shopping centres, and will be described in the context of the distribution of the video signals required for display of those advertisements, to four shopping centres .
Referring to Figure 1, the four shopping centres 1 to 4 receive the video signals from a server 5 at a central station via a wide area network 6. Each shopping centre 1 to 4 includes equipment for displaying the sequences of advertisements conveyed by the video signals, and the equipment provided in each centre 1 to 4 in this respect is illustrated in Figure 1 typically for the centre 4 alone.
The video signals from the network 6 are received by a server 7 in the shopping centre, and are supplied from it to a distribution amplifier 8 for distribution to receiver amplifiers 9 associated respectively with three video display units 10 (more or fewer than three units 10 may be provided) . Each unit 10 comprises a plasma, thin- film transistor (TFT) or other video display device 11 and a verification sub-unit 12 through which the video signals received by the respective amplifier 9 are supplied for display on the screen 13 of display device 11. The verification sub-unit 12 of each unit 10 is operative to add marker signals into the video signals supplied through it to its respective display device 11, so that a display representation of the marker appears in the advertisements displayed on the screen 13.
The appearance of the marker on the screen 13 is sensed and a signal corresponding to it is fed back to the sub- unit 12 as verification that display in accordance with the video signals supplied to the display device 11 is
taking place. In the event that there is no display, for example because of a fault in the display device 11, or it has been switched off, there will be no signal fed back and the failure to display will be revealed. The same applies in the event that the display device 11 is being used to provide a display derived from video signals other than those supplied via the sub-unit 12. Accordingly, not only does the fed-back signal provide evidence that display has taken place, but its absence gives warning that something is amiss.
If there is interruption of the fed-back signal to a sub- unit 12 of any of the display units 10, a trigger signal indicating this fact is transmitted from that sub-unit 12 to the server 7 of the shopping centre. The trigger signal contains identification of the display unit 10 in which the fault or other condition leading to the interruption has occurred, and the server 7 adds its own identification to this signal before transmitting it on to the central-station server 5 via the network 6.
Notice of the alarm condition may be delivered from there or otherwise, for remedial action, by any information- delivery facility (for example, e-mail, telephone or a messaging service) . Furthermore, a record can be kept of at which shopping centres 1 to 4 and at which display units 10 within those centres, interruptions in advertising display have occurred.
The form of a typical display unit 10 will now be described with reference to Figure 2.
Referring to Figure 2, the video signals input to the display unit 10 from its associated amplifier 9, are passed via a video processor 21 of the sub-unit 12 to a video synchronisation-checking circuit 22. From the circuit 22 the video signals pass to a circuit 23 that
adds the marker signals before the video signals are passed on through a video amplifier 24 from the sub-unit 12 to the video display device 11.
The signals added to the video signals in the sub-unit 12 are representative of a flashing cursor and are encoded so as to convey in the flashing a digitally-encoded identification that is unique to the respective display- unit 10; the encoding may be by number and/or flashing- frequency. The added signals are synchronised to the video signals such that the flashing cursor appears in the top left-hand corner of the screen 13 of the display device 11; other corner- or marginal-locations may be used by change of the synchronisation provided within the circuit 23. A photo-sensor 25 is positioned on the screen 13 in this location to respond to the cursor and supply signals in accordance with its flashing to a processor 26.
The processor 26, which is active through the checking- circuit 22 to ensure that synchronisation with the video signals is maintained, receives the signals from the sensor 25 and determines whether they convey the same identification code as the signals added into the video signals in the circuit 23. If they do not, the processor activates a circuit 27 to transmit the identification code to the server 7 (Figure 1) to signal interruption of display. The fact that the marker in this case is encoded and that verification of display depends on the sensor 25 correctly reproducing this code, gives the added assurance that a display representation of the video signals is taking place without break up or picture interference.
It will be appreciated that rather than transmitting the identification code to the server 7 to signal
interruption of the display, that code might be transmitted from the unit 10 only while there is verification within the sub-unit 12 that display is taking place. In this latter event, interruption of transmission of this code to the server 7 is used to signify that correct display is not taking place. As a further alternative, the identification code may be transmitted recurrently to the server 7 together with an indicator of whether or not verification of the display is taking place; a time identifier may also be added.
The information received by the server 7 in this case may then be stored for access periodically by the central- station server 5 via the network 6 so as to enable records for the display units 10 to be kept and maintained up-to-date.
As described above, the signals representative of the marker are added within the display units 10, each such unit including an individual sub-unit 12 as an integral part. However, there may be circumstances where the signals representative of the marker are added at the source of the video signals or elsewhere in advance of the display units 10. More especially, the marker- representative signals may be added during generation of the video signals.
