Abstract

A concrete countertop (10) includes a concrete slab (12) that define a substantially planar work surface (14). The work surface (14) is treated for dire contact with foodstuffs. A piping circuit (16) is embedded within the concrete slab (12) and is coupled to a refrigeration motor (28) for circulating refrigerant through the piping circuit (16). The concrete slab (12) and work surface (14) are thereby cooled by the circulation of refrigerant through the piping circuit (16). In another aspect, the concrete countertop (10) may additionally, or alternatively, include a heating element (90) embedded within the concrete slab (12) to facilitat maintaining the work surface (14) at an elevated temperature. The concrete countertop (10) may further include a control (50) communicating with the refrigeration motor (28) and/or the heating element (90) and operative to maintain the work surface (14) within a desired temperature range.
