Description

A SHADING DISPENSER
Technical Field
The present invention relates to stationery for colouring and, in particular, to stationery for shading on paper.
Background of the Invention
Shading, using coloured pencils, is a well known method for highlighting a particular area of a drawing, figure or map or for introducing colour without obscuring writing, or merely for aesthetic value. Generally in order to shade, a person will take a coloured pencil and grate a powder from the pencil core. The resultant coloured powder is then spread onto paper using a finger. Alternatively the coloured powder can be created by rubbing the core of the coloured pencil vigorously on sandpaper. This powder is also spread onto paper using a finger.
It can be seen that these methods of shading have several disadvantages. The resultant coloured powder is often of a non-uniform consistency which results in blotching or a lack of uniformity in the shading. Moreover, the method of applying the coloured powder to paper is messy and leaves the shader with coloured powder all over their fingers. Oils on the fingers of the user can also cause a lack of uniformity or smudge marks on the paper.
Described in USA patents 3729011 and 1107977 are applicators that apply a powder. More particularly in respect of these two USA patents the powder is a cosmetic typically to be applied to the face. In respect of the device of USA patent 3729011 the applicator includes a hollow body that receives the powder and a "powder puff by which the powder is applied. However internally of the body of the applicator is a transverse wall that separates the powder from the powder puff. There are apertures in the wall that provide for the flow of powder to the puff. A disadvantage of this device is that the transverse wall limits delivery of powder to the puff. The device of USA patent 1107977 is merely a cotton pad impregnated with a powder. There is no reservoir and therefore it has a reasonably limited life in respect of use.
Object of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages. Summary of the Invention
There is disclosed herein a shading applicator for shading paper, said applicator including: a hollow body having a chamber in which there is located a powder to shade paper; an applicator pad said pad having an inner surface with respect of said body closing said chamber, and an outer surface to engage the paper; and wherein said pad has at least one passage extending from said inner surface to said outer surface to provide for the flow of powder from said chamber to said outer surface so that upon said outer surface being rubbed on paper said powder is caused to shade said paper.
Preferably said applicator is elongated so that the said body is elongated and has opposite first and second longitudinal ends, with said first end having said pad.
Preferably said body has a longitudinal axis and said outer surface is inclined to said longitudinal axis by an acute angle. Preferably said outer surface is generally planar.
Preferably said applicator includes a cap attached to said body with said pad being secured to said cap.
Preferably said applicator includes a cover removably attached to said body and covering said outer surface. Preferably, said pad is soft.
Preferably, said pad is resilient.
Brief Description of the Drawings
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic isometric view of a shading applicator to shade paper;
Figure 2 is a schematic side elevation of the applicator of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a schematic side elevation of the body of the applicator of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a schematic side elevation of the applicator pad of the applicator of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a schematic side elevation of a lid of the applicator of Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is a schematic top plan view of the applicator of Figure 1. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments
In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted an applicator 10 that is used to shade paper. The applicator 10 includes a hollow elongated resilient
(flexible) body 11 which in this embodiment is of a generally rectangular transverse cross-section with rounded edges (corners) as best seen in Figure 6. The body 11 has a longitudinal axis 12, with the body 11 having opposite ends 12 and 13.
The body 11 is hollow so as to provide a chamber 14 that has a powder 15 that when applied and rubbed on paper provides a shadowing. The powder 15 is coloured and is composed of coloured pigments and binders such as those contained in the core of a coloured pencil.
The chamber 14 at the end 12 is closed by an applicator pad 17 having an inner surface 18 that closes the chamber 12, and an outer surface 19 that is rubbed on the paper. The surfaces 18 and 19 are inclined to the longitudinal axis 12 by an acute angle. Preferably the pad is resilient but soft. The pad 17 is fixed to a cap 20 that is attached to the end 12.
Preferably the applicator 10 has a lid 21 that when applied to the body 11 covers the surface 19.
Preferably the pad 17 has a plurality of passages 22 that extend between the surfaces 18 and 19 to provide for the flow of powder 15 to the surface 19. Preferably the passages 22 extend generally parallel to the axis 12. The powder 15 is simultaneously smeared over the paper by the soft pad 17 to thereby provide a shading to the paper.
In the above described preferred embodiment the powder directly engages the entirety of the surface 18.
In use of the applicator 10, a user squeezes the body 11 to aid in delivering the powder 15 to the surface 19 via the passages 22. Preferably the body 11 is light transmissive (transparent) so that the colour of the powder 15 can be observed.
