Abstract
An improved composite railroad tie (20) and method of manufacture. The improved railroad tie (20) being fabricated using an injection molding process with various thermoplastic resins and fillers. The improved railroad tie (20) has one or more cavities (30) on at least one side (28) of the tie (20). The cavities (30) enable the gravel rail bed to better grip and provide greater lateral stability. The cavities (30) also reduce the overall weight and cost of the ties (20). A structural insert (40) can be molded into the web (36) of the tie (20) to provide increased stiffness and quality, thus permitting a wider range of soft polymers for a ductile skin or shell.
