  • the pineal gland can receive light entering through the skin of the head. Therefore, the pineal gland detects an optical cycle such as the length of day and night or changes of the sunshine duration by seasons and forms hormone concerning in circadian and photoneuroimmunology rhythm such as annuality or diurnality in generative activities. This hormone is melatonin.
  • melatonin restrains development of generative cells when density of melatonin is high and promotes development of generative cells when density of melatonin is low.
  • melatonin acts to restrain secretion of gonadotropic hormone. It could be found from that pineal gland tumor is broken out at puberty.
  • melatonin acts to coagulate melanosomes in pigment cells, and so, amphibian animals has a white body color.
  • melatonin acts to promote secretion of prolactin and restrain hypophysial functions.
  • melatonin is made through two steps from serotonin which is precursor of melatonin. Like that people sleep better when a light is turned off, melatonin previously generated and stored is secreted into blood when entering light is reduced. An amount of melatonin in blood is reduced in the morning, and so, people can get up and start activities.
  • melatonin has various good effects helpful to the human body. It has been reported that melatonin is concerned in various function such as growing of brain or a rise of immune function besides a cause of sleep, and in resetting aging time of the human body. The amount of melatonin is continuously reduced while aging is advanced. So, there is an experimental report that lifetime of animals which ate melatonin mixed with water was enlarged to 20%. As described above, melatonin reinforces immune strength, protects cells from destroy of the cells, delays occurrence of tumor or rapid growing of tumor, and protect the human being from a hear trouble.
  • melatonin is the most especial from a point of view of dietetics and shows the greatest anti-aging and antioxidant effects.
  • Intrinsic melatonin is pineal gland hormone and obtained from tryptophan by serotonin. Such melatonin serves as a natural healthy sleep support by taking it before sleep.
  • Such melatonin is natural hormone made from the pineal gland in the brain, and serves to set and control time by controlling the human body's circadian and photoneu- roimmunology rhythm. Due to melatonin secreted from the pineal gland every night, people can sleep well. The hormone has been found in 1958.
  • melatonin can be utilized as effective means for preventing and curing unadaptation of time difference due to long-term flying, be a great help to labors who work by turns to set a biologic clock, and show a remarkable effect to people who suffer from insomnia.
  • Melatonin has a decisive role to cure enlargement of the prostate gland and cancer, reduces a numerical value of cholesterol, and has a great influence on generative ability.
  • Such melatonin is natural hormone medicine, but its safety and effects have not been verified clearly, ill effects due to excessive use of melatonin also have not yet been verified, and its toxicity has not been verified. So, melatonin is obscure medicine, and therefore, it is preferable to make a proper environment to naturally generate melatonin in the human body rather than melatonin medicine is directly dosed.
  • Light therapy using a luminescent diode is used for controlling generation of melatonin and curing emotional troubles. That is, differently from psychological therapy focused on "removal of pain", namely, traditional analytic therapy, counseling and medicinal treatment for solving mental problems which are shown outwardly, light therapy will be used for causing general expression of health and removing chronic pains while inducing self-respect, great creativity, healthy human relation, and physical health of a new area.

Background Art
[2] In general, a luminescent diode used in a luminescent diode makes minority carriers
(electrons or holes) injected using a bonding structure of a semiconductor and emits light by recombination of them. Such luminescent diode is also called a Light Emitting Diode (LED).
[3] Such luminescent diode generates a luminescent phenomenon occurring when voltage is applied to the semiconductor, which is called electric luminescence (electric field light emission), forms wavelength of various forms according to luminescent materials. For example, the luminescent diode generates near infrared rays of about 900nm in the case of gallium arsenide, but becomes visible luminescent diode according to an increase of phosphorus content in the case of gallium, arsenic and phosphorus.
[4] Such wavelengths differ according to kinds of foreign matters added to the semiconductor.
[5] In the case of indium phosphide, zinc and oxygen atoms are concerned in red rays
(wavelength of 700nm), and nitrogen atoms are concerned in green rays (wavelength of 550nm). The luminescent diode reduces power consumption and provides good efficiency since it is smaller in size and longer in lifetime than the prior art light source and directly converts electric energy into light energy.
[6] Such luminescent diode is widely used in indicators for meter of vehicles, indication lamps for various electronic appliances such as light source for optical communication, numerical devices, or card readers for calculators.
[7] As described above, visible rays emitted from the luminescent diode controlling wavelength by the foreign matters have wavelength of a visible range out of electromagnetic waves, and the range of wavelength is generally 380~770nm, but differs somewhat according to persons. Changes of properties according to wavelength are shown by color within the range of visible rays, and the wavelength becomes shorter from red color to violet color.
[8] In the case of single-colored ray, wavelength of 700~610nm is shown into red,
610~590nm is shown into orange, 590~570nm is shown into yellow, 570~500nm is shown into green, 500~450nm is shown into blue, and 450~400nm is shown into violet.
[9] Light of wavelength longer than red is called infrared rays, and light of wavelength shorter than violet is called violet rays.
[10] Since the light quantity of solar radiation reaching the earth through the atmosphere is the most in the visible ray zone, the sensitivity in people's eyes is the highest in the zone.
[11] When all rays of the seven colors are mixed, the rays are shown into white, and so, the sun is shown into white.
[12] The reason that white paper is shown into white under the sunlight is that all rays of the seven colors are reflected, and the reason that blue paper is shown into blue is that only blue color of the visible rays is reflected and sensed to people's eyes.
[13] As described above, the luminescent bodies showing visible rays have been invented in order of red-green-blue, since it is difficult to invent compound semiconductor for generating light when wavelength is short. [14] Recently, to generate blue light emitted from the visible luminescent diode of relatively short wavelength, a high-brightness visible luminescent diode having short wavelength of less than 450nm using gallium nitride (GaN) has been invented. The luminescent diode can generate perfect color through rays of three colors of red, green and blue (used in TV sets or monitors), whereby a demand of the visible luminescent diode has been remarkably increased in various luminescent diode application fields, such as colored electric signs, optical memory devices or household electric appliances requiring stable wavelength, and so on.
[15] As described above, in the case of blue light generated from the visible luminescent diode used in broadband, it has been reported by the researching staff in a medical college in the United States that a human being's biological eyesight is sensible to blue light of short wavelength than green light of long wavelength.
[16] It is forecasted that such report may immediately have an influence on light therapy used for curing melancholy and sleep disorder.
[17] Dr. George Brainard who is a professor of neurology at Philadelphia Jefferson
Medical College said that the researched result will be applied to not only all artificial lights used for medical treatment but also all artificial lights including common illumination used in houses, offices and hospitals from a point of long-term view, and that it will take much time to cause general changes, but fundamental work necessary for the changes has been started already. According to George Brainard, rays of blue and green colors will be more effective if a doctor considers a use of light for medical treatment.
[18] Also, when a built-in illuminator is installed in order to improve control of circadian and photoneuroimmunology rhythm, light of the above wavelength is more important. Lots of rays of the above kind are included in broad daylight.
[19] The Brainard research team had researched through the previous study that visible rays of wavelength belonging to the blue zone are effective to generate and control melatonin which is an important factor for effectively controlling circadian and photoneuroimmunology rhythm.
[20] Through the above study, the Brainard research team selected 16 healthy persons as study objects, and measured influences of light onto control of the persons' circadian and photoneuroimmunology rhythms after exposing them to blue light and green light of the same amount.
[21] The research team found that blue light is twice more effective than green light of the same amount to recontrol the human's biological eyesight. George Brainard who leads a sleep and time biology team in a space bio-medicine research laboratory expects that this study result will have a great influence to cure sleep disorder which Americans of more than forty millions suffer. [22] Melatonin effectively generated and controlled by blue light and green light emitted from the visible luminescent diode is hormone generated and secreted from the pineal gland. The pineal gland is an endocrine gland protruding from the back of dien- cephalons of Vertebrata.
[23] The pineal gland can receive light entering through the skin of the head. Therefore, the pineal gland detects an optical cycle such as the length of day and night or changes of the sunshine duration by seasons and forms hormone concerning in circadian and photoneuroimmunology rhythm such as annuality or diurnality in generative activities. This hormone is melatonin.
[24] Particularly, melatonin restrains development of generative cells when density of melatonin is high and promotes development of generative cells when density of melatonin is low. In the case of a human being, it has been presumed that melatonin acts to restrain secretion of gonadotropic hormone. It could be found from that pineal gland tumor is broken out at puberty.
[25] In the case of amphibian animals, melatonin acts to coagulate melanosomes in pigment cells, and so, amphibian animals has a white body color. In the case of rodents, melatonin acts to promote secretion of prolactin and restrain hypophysial functions.
[26] Here, melatonin is made through two steps from serotonin which is precursor of melatonin. Like that people sleep better when a light is turned off, melatonin previously generated and stored is secreted into blood when entering light is reduced. An amount of melatonin in blood is reduced in the morning, and so, people can get up and start activities.
[27] Moreover, it has been informed that melatonin has various good effects helpful to the human body.
[28] As described above, melatonin is the most especial from a point of view of dietetics and shows the greatest anti-aging and antioxidant effects. Intrinsic melatonin is pineal gland hormone and obtained from tryptophan by serotonin. Such melatonin serves as a natural healthy sleep support by taking it before sleep.
[29] Such melatonin is natural hormone made from the pineal gland in the brain, and serves to set and control time by controlling the human body's circadian and photoneu- roimmunology rhythm. Due to melatonin secreted from the pineal gland every night, people can sleep well. The hormone has been found in 1958.
[30] It had been found that such continuous studies of melatonin had important influences on the hormone field, the deduction system and the nerve system. Moreover, as a study result, it has been found that melatonin prevents oxidation, restrains aging and reinforces immune function.
[31] Additionally, melatonin can be utilized as effective means for preventing and curing unadaptation of time difference due to long-term flying, be a great help to labors who work by turns to set a biologic clock, and show a remarkable effect to people who suffer from insomnia. Melatonin has a decisive role to cure enlargement of the prostate gland and cancer, reduces a numerical value of cholesterol, and has a great influence on generative ability.
[32] People could purchase such melatonin support in a healthy food store since 1993.
However, there is lots of argument since safeness of melatonin has not been verified, and so, people shall take melatonin in consideration of purity and safety of melatonin and the number of clinical experiments of melatonin.
[33] Such melatonin is natural hormone medicine, but its safety and effects have not been verified clearly, ill effects due to excessive use of melatonin also have not yet been verified, and its toxicity has not been verified. So, melatonin is obscure medicine, and therefore, it is preferable to make a proper environment to naturally generate melatonin in the human body rather than melatonin medicine is directly dosed.
[34] Light therapy using a luminescent diode is used for controlling generation of melatonin and curing emotional troubles.
[35] A medical study of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) which is the representative melancholy mainly cured by light therapy has shown that changes of seasons may have a great influence on mental health through a numerical value of light. It is written in medical books of Greece (Hippocrates in 400B.C.) and ancient China (2500B.C.) that changes of seasons may cause human's physical and mental changes. You can clearly see it from about fifty thousand patients who suffer from SAD in the United States. SAD causes melancholy, suicide, abuse of medicines and alcohol, fatigue, abnormal sleep, increase of weight, and isolation from friends and family. SAD is generally started to the patients in late autumn when daytime gets shorter, and afflicts them till winter or early spring. Americans of about three hundred fifty thousands suffer from SAD a little. During winter when night is long, people feel fatigue more and get unproductive even though they sleep more. Light fatigue and melancholy cause overeating and drinking which are factors of increase of weight.
[36] However, such phenomena worsen SAD patients. They become active in summer but suffer from severe melancholy in winter. In some case, they are thin-faced due to thinking of suicide and endanger their family and colleagues, and their melancholy rises in spring when daytime gets longer. SAD like melancholy of other types is of hereditary nature, and has more influence on women than men. SAD symptoms of some patients rise when cloudy skies are continued in the middle of the summer season, and such symptoms may be caused even in warm weather. Hypothetically, medical researchers have started to artificially extend daytime by exposing the patients to fluorescent light.
[37] Light intensity of 2,5001ux is still brighter than light of about 5001ux used in general houses. As a result of the experiment, some melancholiacs who get ill effects to antidepressant experienced remarkable improvement within a week.
[38] Such experimental result proved that artificial light stimulating sunlight helps the human body's light-dependent functions. Compared with other artificial lights, the artificial light improves health, mood, behaviors and study by reducing physical stress.
[39] Based on the above information, we have to widen our insight of light. Light is not just technological development used for brightening our living environment, but one of medically preventive tools having the strongest potential energy.
[40] At one time, sunlight had been used as a general tonic for curing all diseases.
Nowadays, light and colors expressed by light are used in almost all scientific and medical aspects. However, now, doctors who have believed that medicines and technologies which injure the human body had a curable value start to admit power of light having no ill effects. The medicinal approach which is harmful to treatment will be an outmoded therapy when an era of light comes. A scalpel for surgical operation will be substituted with laser, chemical therapy with light therapy, medicinal treatment with color treatment, acupuncture with optical needle, and eyeglasses with healthy eyes. Cancer will be the past disease, and so health and longevity will be a standard of the future. Continuous studies of light in photoneuroimmunology which is a science for controlling immunity by rays have advanced in various studies.
[41] Light therapy used for curing SAD has been developed into various types in such a way as to be helpful to the human body in relation with nonseasonal melancholy, fatigue due to time difference, jet lag of circadian and photoneuroimmunology rhythm, graveyard shift workers, and sleep disturbances with age, and extended to the medical field for preventing and curing melancholy, sleep disorder and aging using the luminescent diode standing in the spotlight of industrial fields. [42] However, a development of a useful device for controlling circadian and photoneu- roimmunology rhythm by balancing and controlling generation of melatonin according to the human body using visible rays which are the most effective to generate and control melatonin is demanded. [127] The operation of the circadian and photoneuroimmunology rhythm control device using the luminescent module having the above configuration will be described as follows.
[128] First, the power supply part 140 having the main power supply 141 operated by the power switch 144 is connected to the rear center of the holder bar 131 of the holder part 130 having the ear holders 132 fit on the user's ears, so that the power supply part 140 is located at the user's occipital region while the ear holders 132 are fit on the user's ears.
[129] In the state where the user wears the holder part 130 and the power supply part 140, the user coupes the coupler 133 having the angle-adjustable saw teeth 134 with the coupler 123 of the connection bar 121 having the angle-adjustable saw teeth 124 in front of the user's ear. At this time, the user couples the angle-adjustable saw teeth 124 of the connection part 120 with the angle-adjustable saw teeth 134 of the holder part 130 while vertically adjusting the angle according to the position of the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area, and then, inserts and fixes the fastening member 125 of the connection part 120 into the fastening hole 135 of the holder part 130 in order to fasten and fix the connection part 120.
[130] At this time, the power jack 126 formed on the coupler 123 of the connection part
120 is inserted and coupled into the power applying hole 136 formed in the holder part 130 so as to apply electric power from the power supply part 140 to the connection part 120.
[131] Moreover, the rotating member 127 is formed at the area of the connection bar 121 where the coupler 123 of the connection part 120 is coupled with the coupler 133 of the holder part 130, whereby the connection bar 121 can control the distance and angle between the light emitting part and the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area according to the position of the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area while the connection bar 121 is rotated.
[132] Moreover, the connection bar 121 of the connection part 120 is made of flexible material for a precise control, so that the interval and position of the light emitting part 110 connected to the connection bar 121 can be adjusted according to the position of the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area.
[133] In addition, the connection bar 121 of the connection part 120 may be a collapsible multistage connection bar 121, whereby the length of the connection bar can be adjusted by adjusting its step-height according to the position of the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area.
[134] Additionally, it is preferable that the connection bar 121 of the connection part 120 has a length-adjustable device 128 connected thereto and having a length-adjustable tube 128a and a number of length-adjustable holes 128b formed on a side thereof, whereby the length of the length-adjustable device 128 is controlled according to intervals of the length-adjustable holes 128b.
[135] Furthermore, it is preferable that the connection bar 121 of the connection part 120 has a length-adjustable device 128 connected thereto and having a length-adjustable tube 128a having screw thread portions 128c formed at the front and rear end portions thereof in opposite directions at regular intervals, the length-adjustable tube 128a having the inner screw thread, whereby the interval of the length-adjustable device 128 is controlled according to the rotational direction.
[136] As described above, in the state where the connection part 120 is fixed to the holder part 130, the light emitting part 110 for radiating light while protecting the visible luminescent diode 111 mounted in the housing with the transparent cover 113 is connected to the connection part 120 in such a way that the insertion connector 114 formed at an end of the light emitting part 110 and rotatably inserted into the connection hole 122 formed on the front side of the connection part 120 for controlling the angle of the light emitting part 111, so that light emitted from the visible luminescent diode 111 exactly reaches the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area and can control melatonin by precisely controlling the distance of the light emitting part 110 from the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area and the angle of the light emitting part 110.
[137] At this time, light emitted from the visible luminescent diode 111 operates light therapy by using visible rays of blue, green or bluish green color having relatively short wavelength, which are excellent in generation and control of melatonin, or operates light therapy by radiating red light for a predetermined time period according to the purpose of medical treatment. [138] While vertically controlling the angle by mounting the angle-adjustable saw teeth
124 and 134 on the coupler 123 and 133 of the connection part 120 and the holder part 130, the user controls the interval of the light emitting part from the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area with the connection bar 121 by rotating the rotating member 127 or by bending the connection bar 121 made of the flexible material, and controls a radiation angle of the light emitting part 110 by electric power applied from the power supply part 140 in the state where the insertion connector 114 of the light emitting part 110 is connected with the connection hole 122 of the connection part 120, so that anybody can exactly radiate visible rays to the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area while controlling the angle without regard to the user's body proportion and face size.
[139] Here, the main power supply 141 embedded in the power supply part 140 applies electric power to the light emitting part 110 through a signal of the control portion 142 having the timer 143 therein when the user manipulates the power switch 144 formed on the outer surface of the power supply part 140 and the wireless controller 145 mounted on the upper portion of the power supply part 140 and remotely controlled, whereby the visible luminescent diode 111 emits light. At this time, the timer 143 embedded in the control portion 142 calculates time to provide the optimum time period for radiating blue and green rays of short wavelength to the user's eyeball or any part of the facial area or any part of the facial area, and the red rays are not emitted beyond a predetermined time period to promote safety since the red rays have a great influence on the user's eyesight when they are radiated for a long time.
