The present invention relates to an adaptor, particularly, but not exclusively, an adaptor for attaching objects to a tray used on means of transport, such as a folding aircraft tray, or the like.
Trays (or tables) used on means of transport, such as planes, trains etc., are typically compact units which are often designed to be folded in a stowed position in a chair, or the like. However, such trays suffer from the problem that objects placed on the tray can easily fall off due to the forces caused by tilting, braking or other sudden movements.
Retrieval of objects from the floor of such means of transport is often difficult, especially if the object has rolled under a passenger's seat at another part of the vehicle. The problem is exacerbated if travelling with children, who may have a number of objects for their amusement which continually fall off the tray. Repeated gathering of the objects is stressful and inconvenient for other passengers.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an adaptor for attaching objects to a tray member used on means of transport which obviates or mitigates one or more of the disadvantages referred to above.

Preferably the adaptor comprises a third attachment means for securing the one or more objects to the adaptor.
Preferably the third attachment means comprises one or more compartments.
Preferably the one or more compartments are adapted to retain the one or more objects.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: -
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an adaptor in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of an adaptor in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention.
With reference to Fig. 1, an adaptor 10 for removably securing one or more objects to a tray member used on means of transport comprises a base member 12, a first attachment means 14 and a second attachment means 16.
The base member 12 is a substantially planar member which is made of a soft webbing material.
The base member 12 is attached to a tray member, such as a folding aeroplane tray etc., by the first attachment means 14. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the first attachment means 14 comprises a longitudinal strap 18 and two lateral straps 20 which are fixed to the base member 12. The straps 18, 20 have first fastening means 22 in the form of Velcro, buttons and loops or popper studs to fasten either end of the straps 18, 20 together. Although it should be appreciated that any suitable fastening means could be used to fasten either end of the straps 18, 20 together. For example, the straps 18, 20 could be one piece elastic cords.
Having one longitudinal strap 18 and two lateral straps 20 ensures that the adaptor 10 may be easily secured to any type of tray, or indeed, any substantially planar member. Objects 24 may be attached to the base member 12 by the second attachment means 16. The second attachment means 16 are straps in the form or elastic cords which are removably secured to the base member 12 and additionally, or alternatively, to the objects 24. The elastic cords 16 have second fastening means 26 to attach the cords 16 to the base member 12 and the objects 24 to the cords 16. The second fastening means 26 may be in the form of Velcro, buttons and loops, popper studs, clips, glue, fusion or stitched thread. Although it should be appreciated that any suitable fastening means could be used to attach the cords 16 to the base member 12 and the objects 24 to the cords 16.
The adaptor 10 is secured to a tray, or the like, by placing the base member 12 on top of the tray and wrapping the straps 18, 20 around the tray and fastening their loose ends together with the fastening means 22.
The objects 24 are typically playthings for children and may be attached to the base member 12 either before or after the adaptor 10 has been secured to the tray.
The base member 12 has a plurality of fastening means 26 located at various points on the base member 12 to allow the cords 16 (and objects 24) to be positioned at a number of different positions. The objects 24 may therefore be easily attached and detached from the base member 12 to reposition them as required.
The base member 12 optionally has a lip portion (not shown) surrounding one or more of the circumferential edges to prevent items placed upon the base member 12 rolling off.
The base member 12 also optionally has recessed portions (not shown) to store articles such as pens, pencils, crayons etc.
As the base member 12 is manufactured from soft webbing and the first and second attachment means 14, 16 are made of cord, the adaptor 10 may be easily stored by either rolling it up or folding it as required.
Fig. 2 illustrates a second embodiment of the present invention. The adaptor 100 of Fig. 2 is similar to the Fig. 1 embodiment except the adaptor 100 of Fig. 2 includes a second attachment means 116 which comprises a plurality of compartments 101 incorporated into the base member 112. The compartments 101 are adapted to receive one or more objects 124. In the embodiment illustrated here the compartments 101 are clear plastic wallets and the objects 124 are cards. The cards form part of a game to be played by children. The adaptor 100 also includes a plurality of flaps 103 which are used to cover the compartments 101. Although it should be appreciated that the compartments 101 could have any configuration suitable for storing objects.
The adaptor 10, 100 therefore obviates or mitigates the disadvantages of previous proposals by providing a way of removably securing objects to trays used on means of transport. The adaptor 10, 100 avoids the need to retrieve objects which have rolled to other parts of the vehicle.
Modifications and improvements may be made to the above without departing from the scope of the present invention. For example, although the adaptor 10, 100 has been described above as being for use with a tray used on an aeroplane tray etc., it should be appreciated that the adaptor 10, 100 may be attached directly to other articles, such as train trays, motor vehicle seats, restaurant seats or tables, household furniture etc.
Also, although the first attachment means 14 has been shown as comprising one longitudinal strap 18 and two lateral straps 20, it should be appreciated that the first attachment means 14 could comprise any suitable number or arrangement of longitudinal and lateral straps, as required by the shape of the tray member to which the adaptor 10 is to be attached.
Furthermore, although the base member 12 has been described above as being manufactured from a soft webbing material, it should be appreciated that the base member 12 may be manufactured from other materials such as wood, metal or plastic.
Also, although the base member 12 has been described above as being substantially planar, it should be appreciated that the base member 12 may be of any suitable shape which provides means for securing one or more objects thereto.
Furthermore, although the objects 24, 124 above have been described as playthings for children, it should be appreciated that the adaptor 10, 100 could be used to secure other objects such as pens, pencils, notebooks, electronic devices etc.
Also, although the second attachment means 16 has been described above as being removably secured to the base member 12, it should be appreciated that the second attachment means 16 could be permanently attached to the base member 12. Similarly, the objects 24 could be permanently attached to the second attachment means 16.
Furthermore, although the adaptor 10, 100 has been described above as providing a way of preventing objects falling off of trays, it should be appreciated that the adaptor 10, 100 could also be secured to trays, or the like, in a manner which allows the objects (playthings) 24 to swing freely below the adaptor 10, 100. Thus providing an alternate way of keeping small children amused whilst travelling for example. Also, although the adaptor 10 has been described above as including first and second attachment means 14, 16, it should also be appreciated that the adaptor 10 may additionally include a third attachment means (not shown) for securing the one or more objects to the adaptor 10. The third attachment means may be in the form of one or more compartments which are adapted to retain the one or more objects.
