Abstract
A coupling unit for connecting an electricity meter to an electricity supply system. The invention is characterized in that the coupling unit includes a quick coupling unit (1) for connection to an electricity meter (7), and a cutout switch (3) which is connected to the power circuit downstream of the quick coupling unit.
Description
CONNECTING UNIT FOR ELECTRICITY METER.
The present invention relates to a coupling unit for electricity meters, or integrating meters, that have a built-in cut-out function.
The entire Swedish electricity supply measuring system will be replaced before July 2009. This means that future electricity meter exchanges will take place on concentrated occasions.
In order to enable future meter exchanges to be carried out effectively, it is now the right time to fit a quick coupling unit at places where the existing meter can be replaced by personnel that have the necessary expertise.
In order to facilitate the operation of future systems for automatically summing up the amount of units of electricity consumed, it is of the utmost importance that the voltage applied to the meter and its associated communications unit is not cut off. In present day electricity supply systems the cut-out switch is mounted upstream of the meter in practically 100% of all cases. This means that when the customer disconnects his/her meter from the electricity supply system no voltage will be applied to the meter.
In the case of present day meter exchanges, the meter is equipped with a communications terminal, by means of which the meter communicates with the electricity supplier. One problem with present day systems is that many electricity customers activate their circuit breaker or cut-out which is seated upstream of the meter. As a result, the associated communications equipment is also switched off, wherewith communication with the electricity supplier ceases. The electricity supplier is then of the understanding that the communications equipment has malfunctioned.
The present invention solves this problem and provides a quick coupling unit that enables an electricity meter to be changed simply and quickly.
The present invention thus relates to a coupling unit for connecting an electricity meter, or integrating meter, to an electricity supply system, and is characterized in that the coupling unit has a quick coupling unit for connection to an electricity meter and a cut-out switch which is connected in the current-supply circuit downstream of the quick coupling unit.
By providing the quick coupling unit with a cut-out switch that is connected downstream of the meter, the customer is able to disconnect his system without switching off the meter and its associated communications equipment.
Further the present invention is to simplify future electricity meter exchanges.
The present invention thus relates to a method of installing a cut-out and a quick-coupling unit in a common unit with the intention of facilitating of future meter exchanges while enabling a customer's electricity supply system to be disconnected without disconnecting the electricity meter and its associated communications unit.
The invention will now be described in more detail partly with reference to embodiments of the present invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 illustrates from beneath a quick coupling unit according to a first embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the quick coupling unit shown in figure 1;
Fig. 3 illustrates the quick coupling unit of figure 1 from above;
Fig. 4 illustrates the quick coupling unit of figure 1 from the right side of said unit; Fig. 5 is a coupling diagram;
Fig. 6 is a front view of an electricity meter according to a first embodiment having connection cables;
Fig. 7 is a front view of an electricity meter having a quick coupling unit according to figure l; Fig. 8 is a front view of an electricity meter and a quick coupling unit according to a second embodiment; and
Fig. 9 is a side view of an electricity meter and a quick coupling unit according to a second embodiment.
Figures 1-4 illustrate a first embodiment of a coupling unit 1 according to the invention. This unit includes a coupling strip 2.
The quick coupling unit 1 includes a cut-out switch 3 which is connected to the electric current supply circuit downstream of the electricity meter. The meter will normally include a communications module for sending measurement data to a central collection system.
When fitting the quick coupling unit an existing electricity meter is replaced with said unit 1, wherewith the input and output conductors at the site of the meter are connected to the bottom edge of the quick coupling unit by mean of screws 5, 6, and incoming conductors are covered with a standard cover.
Figure 6 illustrates a new electricity meter 7 that has connection conductors 8 for connection to the quick coupling unit 1.
The connection cables of the new meter are connected to the quick coupling unit. AU connecters are screwed securely with a common screw 9. This single screw 9 functions to press a pressure plate (not shown) against the electric conductors and to exert the same contact pressure on all conductors; see Figure 7. The connection screws of the new electricity meter are covered by a fixed covering plate 10; see Figure 4.
This simple connection with a common screw simplifies any future meter exchanges besides lowering the costs.
The reference numeral 11 denotes an elongate connector strip cover.
Figure 5 illustrates a coupling diagram in which the reference numeral 3 identifies said integrated cut-out from which conductors 12 extend to the electricity consumption site and where incoming conductors are referenced 13. Reference numerals 14, 15, 16 identify fuses.
The reference numeral 17 identifies the old existing cut-out switch. Subsequent to mounting the quick coupling unit 1, the cut-out switch 17 is covered with a cover plate so as to prevent the customer from manoeuvring said switch 17.
When the customer wishes to disconnect the current supply with the aid of the main power switch on the meter, there is used the integrated cut-out 3. As a result, current to the electricity meter and its associated communications equipment is not cut out.
Figures 8 and 9 illustrate a second embodiment of the invention. This embodiment differs from the first embodiment by virtue of providing the meter with male electric contacts 18 and of providing the quick coupling unit with corresponding female electric contacts 19, instead of providing the meter with bare connection conductors 8 which are held firm by said pressure plate. This makes the exchange of an electricity meter easier to achieve.
Although the invention has been described with reference to various embodiments, it will be understood that the structural design of the quick coupling unit can be varied without departing from the concept of the invention, namely by providing a quick coupling unit that includes a cut-out switch disposed between the meter and the consumer.
It will therefore be evident that the invention is not restricted to the embodiment described above, since variations and modifications can be made within the scope of the accompanying claims.
Claims
1. A coupling unit for connecting an electricity meter to an electricity supply system, characterized in that the coupling unit includes a quick coupling unit (1) for connection to an electricity meter (7), and a cut-out switch (3) which is connected to the current supply circuit downstream of the quick coupling unit.
2. A coupling unit according to claim 1, characterized in that the quick coupling unit (1) includes a pressure plate which functions to press against the connection cables (8) of the electricity meter (7).
3. A coupling unit according to claim 1, characterized in that the coupling unit includes a number of male electrical contacts (18) that are adapted for co-action with corresponding female electric contacts (19) disposed in the quick coupling unit (1) for connection to the electricity meter (7).
