Description
Method for rerouting mobile phone communications
Background of the invention:
GSM Mobil phone operators have a virtual monopoly over the calls made by their users. The user is able to switch to another operator by subscription or with a prepaid SIM Card but the prices are still artificially high compared to the true cost or fixed line cost of making a call. Local calls from a GSM mobile phone are reasonably priced but international calls and all calls when roaming are very expensive. There are tricks the user can do to offset these prices. GPRS is a Wireless WAN packet-switched technology that enables highspeed wireless Internet and other data communications. GPRS is considered a "2.5G" technology, meaning it is more advanced than standard 2G digital technology, but does not meet the requirements of a full- fledged 3G technology. GPRS and 3G enable a GSM phone to communicate with any device or server on the Internet.
Wireless PAN (Personal Area Networking) (WPAN), Wireless LAN (Local Area Networking) (WLAN) and Wireless WAN (Wide Area Networking)
(WWAN) are integrated in or soon will be integrated in next-generation "2.5G" and "3G" mobile phones here after referred to as "GSM phones". Bluetooth is the current implementation of WPAN, WI-FI is the new name for WLAN and GPRS and 3G are WWAN technologies.
Bluetooth is an open standard for short-range transmission of digital voice and data. It supports point-to-point and multipoint applications. Provides up to 720 Kbps data transfer within a range of 10 meters. It has already been implemented in most of the current GSM phones on the market. The "three- in-one phone" usage model is one of the original usage models for Bluetooth. It describes how a mobile phone with Bluetooth can be used in three different scenarios:
1. As a cordless telephone with Bluetooth interface to a base station, which is connected to the home PSTN line or to the Office PBX 2. As an Intercom with Bluetooth interface, peer-to-peer communication with no network
3. As a traditional mobile phone over the GSM network
Since almost all new GSM phones already have Bluetooth, connecting one to a voice over Bluetooth base station can be achieved with a software application downloaded to the GSM Phone.
WI-FI is a WLAN technology using Ethernet. Voice over IP (VoIP) is the technology used to send voice over WI-FI networks. (Wireless-Fidelity) is a logo from the Wi-Fi Alliance that certifies that Ethernet devices comply with the IEEE 802.11 wireless standard.
SIM Card, Subscriber Identity Module is a card used in a GSM phone. The card holds a microchip that stores information needed for the GSM phone to function. It contains a code that uniquely identifies itself to the
network service provider. The SIM card allows the subscriber to use the GSM service regardless of the GSM mobile phone, that is, a subscriber can remove the SIM card from mobile phone A, insert it into mobile phone B, and use any services the SIM card allows on phone B.
SIM Card Array is a device for central storage of and remote access to any number of SIM cards.
Class 4 Telecom Switch is an intelligent device operated by Telecom carriers and Telecom service providers. It receives calls from subscribers and other service providers and routs the calls based on routing logic in the switch or by instructions from an intelligent server. Hereafter referred to as Telecom Switch.
Description of the invention:
The general purpose of the invention is to provide a method for rerouting mobile phone communications, which involves least cost routing of the communications.
The invention therefor describes an internet server controlled method for rerouting mobile phone voice and data communication based on the lowest cost mobile operator for local calls and data whether the user is within the home network/country or in a foreign network/country. It also is able to backhaul to a fixed line operator for international calls. Local and international calls could also be routed over a wireless LAN connection when the user is in range of a wireless LAN also referred to as Voice over Wi-Fi.
In this context :
The first specific object of the invention is a pocket sized GSM Roaming device:
1. Which serves as a Bluetooth base station to a GSM phone acting as a cordless phone as described above in the "three-in-one phone" usage model. Optionally for GSM phones that are equipped with other WPAN chips or WLAN chips the communication between the GSM phone and the GSM Roaming device could be another method in addition to or separate from Bluetooth. Any reference to Bluetooth is generic for all present or future local wireless technologies.
2. Which contains a GSM engine but does not physically contain a GSM SIM Card, the GSM engine uses a SIM Card that is stored in a remote SIM Card Array. All communication between the GSM engine and the SIM card is relayed over the Internet (back and forth) between one of the SIM Cards physically located in the remote SIM Card Array. This technique can be referred to as if the GSM phone is using a virtual SIM card. 3. Optionally the device can be incorporated with a WLAN chip so that when the user is in the office or at a Wi-Fi location all calls can be made using VoIP/Voice over Wi-Fi.
4. With the addition of the WLAN and Voice over Wi-Fi the device could be used by a GSM phone equipped with a WLAN chip, VoIP phone or VoIP gateway to make GSM calls via a virtual SIM.
It is not the intention of this patent to make a claim on the use of VoIP from a GSM phone but having a separate device to perform this function and access it via Bluetooth from a GSM phone is.
The second specific object of the invention is dedicated software, more in particular referred to as GSM Phone Application Software Program, which is
a software application that is downloaded to a GSM phone. The software enables the GSM phone to:
1. Act as a cordless Bluetooth phone
2. Give the GSM Roaming device a data connection to the Internet via the GSM phone's GPRS/3G link. This data link is used until the GSM
Roaming device has established its own GPRS/3G link using the virtual SIM card.
3. Communicate with a dedicated central server (more in particular referred to as the Least Cost Routine (LCR) Management Server, as described here below)
4. Monitors the GSM phone to check if it is roaming.
The GSM Roaming device could optionally handle items 3 and 4.
The third specific object of the invention is the LCR Management Server, which communicates with and controls:
1. The GSM Phone Application Software Program
2. The GSM Roaming device
3. The SIM Card Array.
The fourth specific object of the invention is an optional solution combining the GSM phone, GSM Phone Application Software Program and the GSM Roaming device into a custom built GSM phone containing all the components of the GSM phone and the GSM Roaming device but the communication between the two is not via Bluetooth WPAN or WLAN but a direct connection between the two CPUs or having one main CPU controlling both GSM engines. This solution in the inventor's opinion is not as practical as the GSM Roaming device approach because it does not give the user the flexibility to choose his/her own mobile phone and a mobile phone of this type is more complex and costly to develop and manufacture than the GSM Roaming device. All references to the GSM phone and the GSM Roaming device in this patent are also applicable to the custom built
GSM phone with the exception of the WPAN or WLAN communication between the two.
Thus, the invention provides a method for rerouting mobile phone communications involving a GSM phone provided with a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) allowing TCP/IP connection, which method provides for TCP/IP connection to a dedicated central server (in particular a so called LCR Management Server, as referred to above), comprising (in a SIM Card Array) a plurality of SIMs corresponding to different GSM networks, and which method provides for the emulation of an image of a selected SIM to the GSM phone, or a cooperating dedicated separate device, provided as an extension device for the GSM phone (in particular a so called GSM Roaming device as referred to above), as a virtual SIM, in addition to the actual SIM provided in the GSM phone, from information provided by said dedicated central server (with said SIM Card Array).
The virtual SIM is preferably emulated via the GSM network corresponding to the actual SIM in the GSM phone and via the internet, using integrated circuit technology with dedicated software, and most preferably emulated through relaying of data.
Most appropriately a memory for storing the Mobile Network Code (MNC) and Mobile County Code (MCC) is provided in the GSM phone and when said dedicated software (in particular the GSM Phone Application Software Program referred to above) detects a location change of the GSM phone, an IP-message with the changed MNC and/or MCC is sent to said dedicated server and a virtual SIM corresponding to said changed MNC and/or MCC is loaded from said SIM Card Array and said changed MNC and/or MCC into said MNC/MCC memory.
Incoming calls to the number corresponding to the actual SIM may very suitably be diverted to a fixed number corresponding to the country of said actual SIM, whereas incoming calls arriving at said fixed number may be routed via intelligent switching to the number corresponding to said virtual SIM.
Outbound calls from the GSM Phone via the GSM Roaming device to fixed line or mobile numbers that are in the same local area of the mobile network corresponding to the virtual SIM may appropriately be made automatically, directly via said virtual SIM whereas other outbound calls are preferentially routed to a fixed line operator in the same area as the mobile network operator corresponding to said virtual SIM, via a local call to a SIM Box or via a fixed network number in the same area as said mobile network operator. According to a further feature of the invention the method most appropriately comprises means designed to detect when a call is being made by the GSM phone, to delay the GSM phone from making the call immediately , to send an IP message, containing the Calling Line Identification (CLI) corresponding to the calling GSM phone, and the Dialled Number Identification (DNI) corresponding to the correspondent phone line, to a dedicated server, to have said dedicated server send a diverting number of the Telecom Switch to the GSM phone, to have the GSM phone call the diverting number and the Telecom Switch receive the call, and to have the Telecom Switch call said DNI and connect the call. The dedicated server works in cooperation with the Telecom Switch to reroute the call from the GSM phone or GSM Roaming device to the correspondent number.
The SIM card provided in the GSM phone suitably offers GPRS, UMTS or 3G Internet connection service.
The invention also specifically relates to device for providing or assisting rerouting of mobile phone communications, comprising integrated circuit technology with dedicated software provided to emulate a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) from information provided from a dedicated server.
Such device may in particular consist of a separate dedicated extension device for co-operating with a GSM phone.
The device therefor very appropriately comprises Bluetooth engine means and acts as a Bluetooth base station so that a GSM Phone has direct voice and data communication over Bluetooth to said device.
Detailed description of specific embodiments of the invention:
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the method may more specifically involve the following aspects: To begin:
1. There must be a physical SIM card from the local mobile operator in the user GSM Phone.
2. The GSM Phone must be configured for GPRS/3G service. 3. The GSM Phone Application Software Program must be installed in the user's GSM phone.
4. The GSM Roaming device must be turned on and within range of the GSM phone.
When the GSM Phone is turned on the GSM Phone Application Software Program is started. It makes a Bluetooth connection to the GSM Roaming device and makes an IP/Internet connection over GPRS/3G to the LCR Management Server. The network Roaming location of the GSM phone is monitored by the GSM Phone Application Software Program and, upon detection of a change (which means the phone is roaming), an IP-message with the changed network and/or country is sent to the LCR Management
Server. The LCR Management Server gives a command to the SIM Card Array (which may or may not be in the same physical location as the LCR Management Server) to load a virtual SIM corresponding to the new location of the GSM phone and GSM Roaming device. The GSM Roaming device is then configured using the virtual SIM. All subsequent GSM Phone calls will be made via the GSM Roaming device.
In a further preferred embodiment of the invention the method may additionally or alternatively involve the following specific aspects : When the GSM phone is roaming incoming calls to the number corresponding to said actual SIM card in the GSM phone are diverted to a fixed number corresponding to the region/country of said actual SIM card, and incoming calls arriving at said fixed number are routed via Intelligent switching to the number corresponding to said virtual SIM in the GSM Roaming device.
In still a further embodiment of the invention the method may additionally or alternatively involve the following specific aspects :
Outbound calls from the GSM Roaming device to fixed or mobile phone numbers that are local to the network corresponding to said virtual SIM may be automatically made directly via said virtual SIM whereas other outbound calls are preferentially routed to a fixed line operator in the same area as the mobile network operator corresponding to said virtual SIM, via a local call to a SIM Box or via a fixed network number in the same local area as said mobile network operator.
The method of the invention may also involve, as a further specific embodiment of the general method of the invention, to provide means specifically designed to • detect when a call is being made by the GSM phone,
• delay the GSM phone from making the call immediately,
• send an IP message, containing the Calling Line Identification (CLI) corresponding to the calling GSM phone, and the Dialled Number Identification (DNI) corresponding to the correspondent phone, to the LCR Management Server, • have the LCR Management Server send a diverting number of the
Telecom Switch to the GSM phone,
• have the GSM phone call the diverting number directly when in the home network/country or via the GSM Roaming device when roaming, • have the Telecom Switch receive the call (this is the "A" leg of the call),
• have the Telecom Switch call the DNI corresponding to the correspondent phone (as previously sent to the LCR Management Server) (this is the "B" leg of the call) • have the Telecom Switch connect the "A" leg and the "B" leg together so conversation may begin and billing start when the "B" leg is answered.
The invention provides a reduction or elimination of roaming charges for GSM communications, by allowing the user to place calls using a local SIM card in the GSM Roaming device no matter what network or country the GSM phone is in. This is accomplished by having a central LCR Management Server control a SIM Card Array, which holds many SIM's from mobile operators of different countries available for use by the roaming GSM phone via the GSM Roaming device.
SIM Card Arrays already exist in the market and are used primarily as a remote SIM storage for GSM Gateways. A GSM Gateways has one or more GSM Modules that have a direct connection to the PSTN instead of a speaker and microphone. In order to use the SIM Card Array the SIM card
in the GSM Module is replaced with a SIM Emulation Adapter, which is connected to a local PC. The Local PC contains software to emulate the local SIM by accessing information from the SIM Card Array via a LAN/Internet connection.
In order to use this technology with the roaming GSM Roaming device the GSM Roaming device needs to have a permanent connection to the Internet (1 ) via Bluetooth (WPAN) or via a (WLAN) connection to the GSM phone and onwards to the Internet over the GSM phone's GPRS/3G Internet link. (2) Once the GSM Roaming device has a virtual SIM active the GSM Roaming device may use its own GPRS/3G connection to the Internet. There must be an active Internet connection to the GSM Roaming device at all times. The GSM phone takes care of the GPRS connection and calls from the phone while in the home network or country. The GSM Roaming device is loaded with a virtual SIM from the SIM Card Array when the phone roams to a country or network other than the home network or country. The SIM Card Array works in co-operation with a software application running in the GSM Roaming device.
Further features and details of the invention will be readily understood from the following description of some specific embodiments of the method, whereby reference will be made to the attached figures, in which :
figure 1 schematically represents the operational diagram of the "LCR Management Server and SIM Card Array" -method according to the invention;
figure 2 schematically represents the call diversion embodiment of the method according to the invention.
For easier understanding of the method reference is made as a non-limiting example to a situation starting from a specific country. Thus, the Netherlands and a Netherlands Telfort SIM are used to represent the country and network of origin of the GSM phone and its SIM card and Germany is used to represent the country that the GSM phone and GSM Roaming device roam to. One should be aware of the fact that it could be any country and network of origin and any other country or network that the GSM phone and GSM Roaming device roam to.
Example 1
Specific explanation of the general "LCR Management Server and SIM Card Array" method of the invention :
1. A user has a Telfort SIM in his/her GSM phone and a service from Telfort that offers GPRS, UMTS, 3G or another Internet connection service.
2. When the GSM phone is turned on the GSM Phone Application Software Program establishes a TCP-IP connection to the LCR Management Server via the Telfort GSM network and the Internet. 3. The GSM Phone Application Software Program stores the Telfort
Mobile Network Code (MNC) and Mobile Country Code (MCC) in memory.
4. The GSM Phone Application Software Program continuously monitors the MNC and MCC. If they change from the stored Telfort values this means the phone is roaming. There could be other methods to detect when the GSM phone is roaming. (Much of the functionality of the GSM Phone Application Software Program could be incorporated in the GSM Roaming device instead of the GSM Phone Application Software Program).
For example :
If the GSM phone roams from The Netherlands to Germany this will be detected by the GSM Phone Application Software Program: a. GSM Phone Application Software Program sends an IP- message to the LCR Management Server with the new MNC and the German MCC. b. The SIM Card Array holds many SIMs from mobile operators of different countries available for use by the roaming GSM phone via the GSM Roaming device. c. The LCR Management Server instructs the SIM Card Array to send an image of a German SIM to the GSM Roaming device
(this SIM is physically located on the SIM Card Array). d. The German SIM image is emulated in the GSM Roaming device e. The MNC and MCC of the German SIM are stored in the GSM phone's memory as a reference to detect if the GSM phone roams to another country or goes back to the home country.
5. INCOMING CALLS This is an optional enhancement in order to save money on incoming calls. a. The GSM Phone Application Software Program diverts all incoming calls to the original Telfort SIM number to a fixed number of a Telecom Switch in the Netherlands. (The cost of the local diverted call will be free or very cheep depending on the user's Telfort service plan). b. Incoming calls landing on the fixed number are routed via Intelligent Switching to the number of the virtual German SIM. The cost of these two calls will be less than what a user will pay to Telfort for an incoming call while roaming.
6. OUTBOUND CALLS
When the GSM phone makes a call while in Germany a. Local German calls may be made directly by the German mobile operator of the virtual German SIM in the GSM Roaming device. b. All other calls could be made directly by the German mobile operator of the virtual German SIM or optionally routed to a fixed line operator via a local call to a SIM Box or a fixed network number in Germany and then on to the destination number via a fixed line operator offering further reduction in cost compared to a direct call by the German mobile operator of the virtual German SIM.
Example 2
The attached diagram of figure 1 illustrates the Roaming call embodiment of the method according to the invention, as explained by the following summary scenario :
In normal use the user is in the home network and/or country so all calls are placed using the real SIM in the GSM phone. When the GSM phone roams to another network and or country :
1. the GSM Phone Application Software Program detects a different MNC and/or MCC and sends the "roaming" MNC and MCC to the LCR Management Server via an IP message.
2. The LCR Management Server gives a command to the SIM Card Array to configure an appropriate SIM card corresponding to that "roaming" MNC and MCC.
3. A connection is made between the SIM Card Array and the GSM Roaming device, which allows all SIM card communication from the
GSM engine in the GSM Roaming device to be relayed over the Internet to the SIM card in the SIM Card Array.
4. When the GSM Phone Application Software Program detects that the user is making a call it will place the call via the GSM Roaming device configured with the virtual SIM, which is physically stored in the SIM Card Array.
Example 3
Specific explanation of the call diversion embodiment of the invention.
This embodiment enables an end-user to make outgoing international GSM calls with a called party (correspondent) with significant savings in comparison to calls made directly via the mobile operator.
The attached diagram of figure 2 illustrates this embodiment of the method according to the invention, showing how mobile calls from a GSM phone are redirected through an alternative OLO for call termination to a correspondent.
According to the process flow shown in this diagram :
- the GSM phone needs to have Internet access ( GPRS, UMTS, etc.)
- the GSM Phone Application Software Program needs to be downloaded to the GSM Phone.
The GSM Phone Application Software Program according to the invention comprises means designed to
(1 ) detect when a call is being made by the GSM phone,
(2) delay the GSM phone from making the call immediately, (3) send an IP message, containing the Calling Line Identification (CLI) corresponding to the calling GSM phone, and the Dialled Number
Identification (DNI) corresponding to the Correspondent phone line, to the LCR Management Server,
(4) have the LCR Management Server send a diverting number (of the Telecom witch) to the GSM phone. (5) have the GSM phone call the diverting number and the Telecom Switch receive the call;
(6) have the Telecom Switch call the DNI sent in step (3) and connect the call.
